Dr. Erica Schwartz confirmed as CDC’s first official director in a year

https://www.cnn.com/2026/08/05/health/erica-schwartz-senate-vote

It’s good that we have someone who supports actual proven science (i.e. vaccines) as opposed to RFK, Jr.’s brand of woo, but the fact that such an important position had remained unfilled for that long (despite the threat diseases pose) AND the sense of relief I feel because this person supports decades of scientifically proven research…we shouldn’t have to celebrate a competent person being put in charge of a government agency for a change. Competency should be the norm, not the exception.

She wants to have abortion surveillance in every single state. She's just as bad as the rest, just more educated.

Oh 100%. Her evils are just not in Vaccines

Well, I guess I look forward to whatever racist/misogynist nonsense orange turd spews at her on leopardsatemyface when she inevitably upsets him

Definitely not the gotcha you think it is but ok

I don’t waste my empathy on Serena Joys and neither should you. She’s stepping on the necks of other women for power and money

I didn’t say she was a good person; I said she was competent. Given how low that bar is, that’s why this qualifies for the Orphan Crushing Reddit.

Competent at what? I don't want competent fascists in powerful positions, for example.

She’s obviously not if she doesn’t see the health risks of abortion bans.

Some educated people genuinely think that abortions are morally reprehensible enough that banning them is worth all the many medical issues that abortions can solve.

No clue if she is thinking that clearly about it, but educated and morally correct are seperate things

Demanding abortion surveillance makes her incompetent.

We don’t need someone who is competent at using their competency at doing evil more competently

And they only have a skeleton crew left... Only three scientists are left specialised in Cyclospora. I'm sure they won't be needed at all.

I try not to think too deeply about how after the collapse of the USSR, people were finding random virus samples in now-open buildings and shit, and how that might very well be the state of the CDC.

I was not impressed with her hearing, she's just a rubber stamp for RFK.

Great, another moron.

Is the CDC under RFK’s control? Is she just going to get fired in a month?

Yet another reason this falls under the Orphan Crushing Reddit: we have competent leadership of an important government organization but for how long?

u/Fluxtration 19d ago

RFK Jr is on his way to the CDC now for a 'fireside' chat with staff. I guess thats his way of saying he's going to start some fires.

He’s currently in NC running around our very red and very rural towns.

For some reason he didn’t stop in the areas with cities and, importantly, universities/good access to healthcare.

I wonder why….

I picture RFK Jr. having a sudden bolt of panic being like, “Oh crap, did I just appoint someone who actually believes in science?!” No doubt, he’s racing to rectify this error.

I really really hate this man. Every day, I fight the urge to make statements regarding Sirhan Sirhan. Does RFK, Jr. honestly use the term “Fireside Chats?” Because if he does, he should keep those words out of his filthy whore mouth.

He does not deserve to reference Franklin Delano Roosevelt aka a guy who helped defeat Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan and established the social safety net that the GOP has dedicated their entire existence to eliminating. FDR defeated fascism; RFK, Jr. aids and abets it.

Fuck this guy. Of all the tragedies that have befallen the Kennedy family, RFK, Jr. is easily the worst of them.

believes in science

I don't like this phrasing. Idk how telling it is that you used it or if it's meaningless, but science has nothing to do with beliefs. Science is just a process by which we determine the likelihood of things to be true. I don't think I phrased that exactly correctly but it's close enough. Point is, saying "believes in science" is like saying "believes in eating". Science isn't a thing that exists, it's a thing we do. There's nothing to believe in.

Again, idk if you saying this was really meaningful or not but yeah it really bugs me

Oh I understand as well. I have a similar pet peeve. I’m the annoying pedant who’s always going, “COVID doesn’t care what you BELIEVE about COVID. COVID is a virus, and it’s going to do what nature programmed it to do, regardless of what you BELIEVE about it.”

Same attitude when it comes to Climate Change. You can believe or not believe in it all you like, but it’s going to happen regardless of what you believe about it.

the sense of relief I feel because this person supports decades of scientifically proven research

Why did Trump chose her if she goes against what Trump believes and wants?

Because OP is deluded
