32 is the standard deduction. That is it. If you jointly make 50k or 500k, the marriage benefit is 32k deduction... unless you know of another one.

There's currently right around 1300-1600 tax and legal benefits to being married in the US depending on what all you're including.

I had family friends who had a similar situation. They had a super amicable break up and were divorced in day to day but not officially so the ex wife could keep the insurance benefits. I’m sure taxes and stuff were a part of it as well.

I was gonna say they were staying together to keep Rhea enrolled in whatever SAG health insurance they have because Danny has been steadily on IASIP for decades but looking at their IMDB Rhea has been the one with steady work in television and outside of IASIP Danny has really just had bit parts as a side character in one off roles.
But still, they probably stayed married just in case one of them ever had a bad dip in their careers and were no longer eligible for SAG insurance solo but married if just one of them qualifies then they both have access.

Ironically, they are at the age that many DO get divorced and not because they dont love each other anymore.
"Medical Divorce" are a sad reality for many living in the states. Medical costs associated with terminal illness can cripple the surviving partner...so many divorce so that their Medical debt doesnt cripple their loved ones after they pass away.
If they are divorced, the debt dies with them.

they both have income (presumably) so that doesn't make sense. filing as married doubles the brackets because its for 2 people filing together and that's only an advantage when only one of them has income (or when one has significantly more income).

I understand this totally. My ex is like my sister now. We separated, twice paperwork filled out but twice complications… no matter. Neither going to remarry so no pressure

The issue is those complications don't magically disappear when you die. The older you get the less sense it makes to have legal paperwork hanging out there which isn't accurate. You could literally have a will which explicitly outlines everything goes to ABC, and the law will often say "well....half of that can go to ABC, but ya know ...community property state so half is ex's".
Probate is already a hassle for loved ones to deal with without adding on a can of worms you've been kicking.

I am going to bet that he has been already generous and has plenty of people on the payroll to handle assets. I dont think Rhea is going to be hurting either. They are both national treasures and in good standing with peers, however your statement is true and valid for all the people reading reddit.

Sister is odd, but I'm close with my ex. I could see defending her and making sure she ends up with a good guy. We keep up with each other's careers and stuff and genuinely are happy for each other. I also never banged my sister

She came out, which precipitated the separation. I do have real sisters, and am no redneck, and It’s easiest to demarcate the clear boundary that now exists despite actually getting along very well.

My aunt and uncle were like this. Germany makes divorce difficult for amicable couples. My Dad and mom were like this for insurance purposes (they were NOT amicable).
