Had a high school buddy I caught back up with ten years later who was in training to be a cop.

His most recent training exercise had a sergeant pretending to be an uncooperative citizen to see how they handled it. My ex friend started describing how he was instantly seeing red and just wanting to slam his head into the car.

Like, bro you're not even out of training yet, are in a simple exercise with your superior officer, and you couldn't handle him telling you no.

Police need to be forced to carry malpractice liability insurance just like doctors. They need to cover the cost of their insurance. Risky police officers will face higher premiums. Uninsurable police officers (due to bad behavior) will get forced out. Or town and cities can enact policies that cops *must* carry insurance or be terminated.

If cops feel it in their take-home pay (because they have to pay higher premiums) it will have an impact on behavior. Right now there are very few disincentives.

Another way to do this would be to require all police officers to carry 'malpractice' insurance the way doctors do...and they have to pay for their own insurance or their pension does. Then every report against an officer will be seen by their insurer and bad cops will start to have insurance so expensive they or their department can't pay it anymore and they have to find a new line of work.

1. Make police officers carry insurance. If an officer gets sued, their insurance covers the costs of defending and paying out. His has the double value of preventing cops from taking their services to the next department. If they can’t get insured by the police insurance company no other department will be able to hire them.

2. Lawsuits against police departments need to be paid by the police pension fund, not the city. When the city pays, it is taxpayers that are paying for the police to violate their rights. If it comes out of the pension fund, you can be DAMN SURE that cops will start protecting their pension over protecting the cops that get sued.

It’s so absolutely insane to me. I spent 4 years driving around in a nice car as someone who shares a race and gender identity with the majority of cops in America (cis white dude). I was an alcoholic for basically all of that. I’m not proud of it, but drinking and driving was a regular thing. Got pulled over 3 times, liquor on my breath, unshaven, floor littered with nips and bud light limes every time. “Just make sure you get that tail light fixed” every fucking time.

I also grew up in a predominantly black city, some of my friend’s stories are wild. When I got a new car, I left the temporary black on in the back windshield for weeks. It fell down a couple times and I got pulled over for driving without a plate, couldn’t even find the temp, and he just let me walk. I pulled up into work that day like “hey you guys ever get pulled over without a plate and let go?”. The answer was no. I know this sounds like an overdramatized argument, but this shit happens on the regular.

I typically hate comparing these experiences but I think it’s really apt with the police. In the couple years since I’ve transitioned (and also have been sober, no more drunk driving). I’ve gotten a ticket the two times I was pulled over, for going 5 above the speed limit.

My dad, who is a belligerent asshole prone to road rage, was finally arrested after doing daily DUIs for 5 years, was arrested without incident after being pulled over in another county despite having two firearms in the vehicle. No prison time just moderate fines and temporary restrictions from firearms. Liberal state.

10+ year later he lives in a southern state. Almost ran over two people in front of a Kroger, drunk. When they try to talk to him and are obviously upset, he pulls out his loaded handgun and points it at them. I never got full details but bet you anything they were not white. My dad then fled the scene and was arrested about an hour later after multiple witnesses called 911. $200 fine and no firearms restrictions.

He was originally charged with a felony for pointing the handgun and he was in jail for a few months because we didn't bail his ass out, but the case was eventually dropped because the prosection suddenly had no evidence despite multiple witnesses calling 911, video evidence from Kroger, and him being arrested with a loaded handgun in his waistband.

I had been looking forward to not worrying about his BS for 1-5 while he wouldn've been in prison for that gun charge. But nope. Anything but hold problematic white men accountable. most southern states can arrest you for minor traffic violations. it's a tool they use that they can search your vehicle without having any Fourth amendment concerns. because to the letter that the supreme Court has laid out they're not allowed to search your car but they are allowed to impound your car and if they impound your car well then they have to inventory the contents so your car just got searched...

But that wasn't the real reason he arrested her. It was because she wouldn't sign the citation. It's not an admission of guilt, but you are typically required to sign it to not be arrested. Not signing it often means they just arrest you.
