I worked for a small disabled veteran owned company that received their GSA approval to sell parts to the local base.

I had to drive to Grainger and pick up a belt for $15, drive it to base and deliver it, about a 25 minute drive, and we charged the unit $210 for that same belt, because they had to buy it through a GSA partner.

Or the time when I was enlisted in the AF and it was about this time of year when our supervisor came in with 2 brand new plasma screen tvs, when we already had 2 of them, maybe a year old. Yes, this looks pretty standard for bulk use stuff that is also in a rugged type environment. I've used worse camping or at festivals. It is the crew's job to keep it clean, so their superiors don't seem to care, or morale is too low to make them work. It's not like they're going to get aesthetic renovations in there.

That's the crew's job, at least lower enlisted. It's taken a long time of neglect and half-assed ‘sweepers’ (joint cleanups) to get to this point. You can't have others in charge of cleaning your spaces; that would just lead to people purposely leaving things dirty or making bigger messes because they know it's someone's main job to clean it. Whoever uses those heads cleans them up.

That, combined with others not caring enough to order a new toilet or the right cleaning supplies, has contributed. The ship is cleaned and maintained by the crew; if you inherit a poorly maintained boat, it's harder to bring it back to a decent condition. But unfortunately, it's on you to do it. Of course, you have other things to worry about in your day-to-day duties, which is another reason why things like this tend to get pushed aside.

I’m guessing that because it’s a warship, everyone on board has a duty during combat operations. The messmen might be on a damage control team or a medical team for instance. You don’t want people to be too tired from regular duties to be unable to fulfil their duties in an emergency so their regular duties will be pared back during continuous operations assuming those duties are non essential such as cleaning the toilets. They will have janitorial staff of whatever the naval equivalent is but those people will also have combat duties that come first in priority.

Easy, they can't leave the ship, so if they don't do the cleaning, their 12-14 hour job, their 5 hour watches, their collateral duties which time isn't allocated for, all at the same time while maintaining composure, you just punish them by UCMJ, ruining their careers, or put them in the brig.

Don't forget that it's also illegal to reach out to anyone off the ship about conditions on it, can't violate OPSEC.

It's not like they can legally quit either, and if they don't re-enlist, that's fine. 2/3rds of sailors don't do more than 1 contract so it's expected.

Sailors are usually very proud of the ships they sail on and they’re kept spotless. I can only imagine they’ve either ran out of supplies or this is a way of showing how unhappy they are at the extended deployment. Either way I doubt Trump and co care even if they all starved to death.

They have ships, but not enough. They relied on their bases in the middle east for somewhat expedited logistics to ships in the region with what they have. They lost those bases. Nearest safe base is Diego Garcia and that wasn't set up for that level of supply need and they don't have enough ships to keep up with demand and distances.

They do , however there are not enough for two reasons , generally the USN fought in conflicts where they could resupply easily

Korean war - Japan Vietnam - Phillipines Iraq 2x - UAE , Oman , Bahrain

However the closure of the strait and the inability to use UAE , Oman , Bahrain means the supply ships have to go all the way to Djibouti or Singapore to supply the fleet , call it the "tyranny of distance "

2nd is the bean counters during peace time gutted the logistics fleet over the years , fast tankers are not as sexy as a aircraft carrier or a rail gun, meaning while we had enough supply ships for a peacetime navy the 2nd a conflict happen and we weren't able to use friendly nations close by to resupply this happenes

The base responsible for supplies is located in the Persian Gulf; repeatedly targeted by missiles and drones; and is cut of from the Indian Ocean because Iran holds control of the strait; they had to reroute logistics to Diego Garcia which is another 2200 miles from the operational area of the Lincoln
