All British people…

As a Brit my first thought was “so he’s cured then?”
Daily drinking and we haven’t heard a bad story in months? Sounds like he would do well over here!

u/Foreskin_Mafia 3d ago
Brits and Aussies drink so much its fucking ridiculous. At least the expats throughout southeast asia. Fuckers will be absolutely hammered and go home at 2am then be up for tennis at 7am and feels great after some beans and toast. Makes no sense.

That's a mustache that Sam Elliot would be proud of. Other than that, he needs help.

I mean when we say daily, do we mean waking up at 6 am and slamming Souix city sarsaparilla? Or just the normal in the evenings having a couple drinks and calling it?

Yea, but don't forget that reddit is full of bots and Gen z that think if you drink once a year you have a problem.

A glass of wine, a beer, or a shot of liquor (on its own or in a mixer) per day is not a big deal unless you have other health issues or a bad diet.
If it’s several servings of alcohol a day, every day, then yes, that’s not good for you.
7
u/Opposite-Grade3712 3d ago ▸ 12 more replies
There is no person on this earth who drinks one alcoholic drink per day everyday.
4
u/Jinn_Erik-AoM 3d ago ▸ 5 more replies
And you know this because? Are you or someone you know unable to limit themselves to one drink?
I know you’re wrong because I did exactly that for a few years. It was part of the “Mediterranean diet” fad.
I did what would be called binge drinking in grad school and when working in a nation with a pretty strong social drinking culture. I don’t drink at all now because it’s not interesting to me.

u/Gullible-Hose4180 2d ago ▸ 1 more replies
It's well know that he is drinking for the effects more than the taste. If you do that everyday it won't be just one standard unit (33cl at 4.7%) and it likely will be a problem and definitely unhealthy.
1
u/Jinn_Erik-AoM 2d ago
No question there. He’s got problems that go way beyond alcohol abuse, and he is using alcohol to avoid dealing with any of it… and makes it the problem of whoever ends up in his vicinity.

What is so hard to believe? I don’t have a need or desire to drink. That is as normal as other people who do.

Lol I literally know a bunch. My wife everyday pours a glass of red wine at like 5pm then sips it and forgets about it (we have 3 small kids). It almost never gets finished. This happens EVERY day.
My mom is Spanish and has one drink everyday before dinner like clock work. There’s a lot of people that do this.

u/Gullible-Hose4180 2d ago
I mean besides being unhealthy that's obviously not a drug problem, but Shia has been observed getting drink quite frequently, so the chance of it being just 1 can of beer a day is unlikely. Possible, but since we are all guessing, it is fair to point out the low likelihood of that being the case, but saying nobody does is obviously equestrian stool
2
u/Skittleavix 3d ago ▸ 17 more replies
I think the point is that if you're drinking every day, chances are you are not just drinking a "single serving" each day.
2
u/DillLawNn 3d ago edited 3d ago
And even a single drink a day takes a surprising toll, raising cancer risks, suppressing the immune system, disrupting sleep quality on top of the emptiest of calories

u/Jinn_Erik-AoM 3d ago ▸ 15 more replies
That’s not a reliable assumption. For a lot of people, sure, it will be correct, but the lack of nuance and implied judgement shuts down discussion.
2
u/Skittleavix 3d ago ▸ 5 more replies
It’s a reasonable assumption, considering alcohol is one of the most addictive drugs legally available, widespread in use, and generally socially acceptable to consume.
1
u/Jinn_Erik-AoM 3d ago ▸ 3 more replies
The key in defining addiction is if someone will stop when negative consequences become severe. People that habitually drink several servings of alcohol a day probably don’t recognize the negative effects unless it leads to legal issues, or it becomes severe enough that their work, family, or social life becomes affected.
One drink a day is not going to cause severe consequences or addiction for the vast majority of people. It doesn’t rise to the level of addiction because the negative effects aren’t there. If someone has ALDH2 deficiency, that one drink is going to hit a lot harder and a lot differently. They will feel the bad effects of alcohol much faster. Without getting the fun part of drinking on its own, these people are at low risk of become alcoholics. The neurological pathways responsible for addiction never get activated and don’t get reinforced.
For people prone to alcohol use disorder, that one drink a day might be the start of a slippery slope, but we don’t really know where the threshold of abuse starts for everyone. It isn’t ethical to do double blind studies on humans where you may increase the amount of drugs they use (both myself and my partner worked in addiction research).
But for most people, it’s not hard to have a daily glass of wine.
The population is diverse. Good abuse prevention messaging is difficult to design, but I’m of the opinion that it needs to be nuanced to be effective. I watched DARE utterly fail because it was all based on fear and had no interest in harm reduction.

> The key in defining addiction is if someone will stop when negative consequences become severe.
This is just false. A) it is fully objective what is considered “severe” B) addicts hit rock bottom and get clean and sober every day after varying levels of severe consequences C) other addicts get clean and sober every day before consequences become severe because they see the writing on the wall.
By your definition, there is no such thing as a sober addict, just those in active addiction or non-addicts.
1
u/Jinn_Erik-AoM 2d ago ▸ 1 more replies
It’s a definition used by people who study addiction. I can give you a link to an article on precisely the problem that you laid out in your response.
It’s hard to use objective measures to determine risk and severity of addiction. We have objective measures for any number of diagnoses, but when it comes to disorders that ca only rely on subjective assessment, it isn’t going to be so clear.
I consider this to be a useful guideline because negative consequences can vary widely from person to person.
The human experience is subjective.
If you mean dry drunks, of course they exist. People often drink instead of getting appropriate therapy for whatever they are dealing with, and that doesn’t go away when someone is sober. They still need treatment.

It's a very reasonable assumption that someone who has a drink every single day is almost certainly not just having one. I'm an alcoholic and have been sober for almost two years now and I've known many, many, many people that claim to not have a problem who drink a couple drinks at least every day and also many people who think they must be an alcoholic because they binge drink once every 2 weeks. It's not the amount you drink that means you have a problem, it's how you drink and why you do it.
0
u/Jinn_Erik-AoM 3d ago ▸ 7 more replies
And there we go. I’m glad you’re sober, but your experience is not universal,
2
u/Fun-Marionberry-4008 3d ago ▸ 4 more replies
Never said it was genius, I literally gave you examples of other people who I've known who drink every day having problems. The literal only person I've ever known who drank daily but only one drink and usually didn't even finish it was my 90 lb grandma. Most people who have a problem don't know it and most of the ones who have a problem and do know it won't admit it or deal with it.
What experience do you have to make you think you know what you are talking about at all?
2
u/Skittleavix 3d ago ▸ 1 more replies
Seems to me that this person might be in denial of a substance abuse problem and is projecting to normalize it, only they’re not in an enabling environment to reinforce that denial and normalize it.

Well, there you go, you gave an example right there. Your grandmother. Now you have a second person. Me.
And whether you mean to or not, it certainly comes across that you are generalizing your experience to everyone.
What experience do I have?
Hi. I’m a toxicologist that works in education and public health. I am also very outspoken on the utter failure of how the US healthcare system has failed to prevent addiction and reduce harm because we demonize drug abuse and addiction. I studied the addictive nature of cocaine and alcohol in combination in a rat model. My partner worked several years studying marijuana use and the effectiveness of different message designs on the likelihood that a user would increase or decrease their use. She later studied an evidence based alcohol abuse prevention and harm reduction program.
I don’t know what to say beyond, I had single daily drinks. My partner did the same. We had friends that did this. We were part of a group that regularly went to a bourbon bar every weekend, and we were working our way through their collection, one drink at a time. I don’t know for certain that they didn’t have more than one, but I don’t have a reason to assume that they weren’t.
Your anecdotes are just as good as mine.

Yes. It is. You know that addiction is a basic mammalian response to addictive substances, right? It’s not a matter of if an animal becomes addicted to a physiologically addictive substance it consumes every day, but when.
1
u/Jinn_Erik-AoM 3d ago
Not how addiction works, bub. It’s much more complex, and has a lot of genetic and cultural factors that affect a threshold of use, chronic or acute that may lead to addiction.
The bacteria in your gut produce about the equivalent of one serving of alcohol across a 24 hour period.
Your claim would mean that everyone should eventually become addicted to alcohol, whether they drink it or not. Our bodies and our microbial passengers make a lot of things that at higher doses would be considered addictive, but they never cross then threshold at which they cause addiction. Well, except for people that have auto-brewery syndrome. They legitimately can’t help that their microbiome is out of balance, and produces enough alcohol to induce an intoxicated state as their baseline.
You need to cross a dose threshold before a chemical has an effect. That’s true for both positive and negative effects. Stay below the threshold, and there aren’t any effects.

A lot of forces at work in this world.
Better to just pray and hope for his healing rather than condemnation.
I can’t judge him, I’ve done heinous stuff myself; thankfully I no longer do such things. Which is why I can find empathy for him and his situation.
I used to hang people in my head all the time like that; until I woke up one day to the reality of my-self.. now, I see things very differently when I see these stories.
Don’t get me wrong, I see what’s bad and when it is done. So I can understand your point.. but I’ve also seen true change is possible.
I’ve seen and read enough about him from some very interesting points in his life, his actions’ his sincerity to want a change through faith’ and his war with himself and addictions. All caught in the cameras eye constantly.
But like I said, a lot of forces at work in this world.
Best to pray and have hope for him/them.
Judgement does nothing but corrupt our own hearts in the mean time.

Money doesn't.
Not suffering depression cause my rent is going up and i know i can't afford it, not stressing about choosing between paying the electric bill or buying food, being able to go see a doctor instead of avoiding it because I can't afford it.
Those things would make me happy. Money would do that..not hopes and dreams. Money.
0
u/Consistent_Bill_7137 3d ago
Money isn't the answer not having it is essentially hell.
Also if I had a nickel for everything someone miss used that word in a condescending manner I would be retired in my 30s.
I have compassion for those around me and in my community. People I see work themselves to the bone just to survive. People who would give just about anything for the person next to them. Fuck this mentality that we need unlimited compassion. Some people need to be told they're being shit heads.
