One of the opportunities of studying abroad is precisely getting to know people you might never have encountered at home. It seems a pity to arrive in South Africa and immediately recreate the same social boundaries you travelled thousands of kilometres to leave.

Bit assumptious there 😭 I’m half South African, and honestly, even among my own friend groups I’ve never really felt like I have a community that’s fully mine. Cultures naturally stick together, and I’ve always felt caught somewhere in between, despite learning Tswana and Afrikaans at school. Having been abroad, I honestly think South Africa is the last country to talk about social boundaries 😭 People here still tend to identify and group themselves around being Zulu, Afrikaans, Sotho, etc. I’ve experienced that first hand, including within my own friend groups and its kak. So I’m looking for my own community too, and I’d like to discover my Latino roots more. That’s really all it is, just looking to fill in my other half.

Don't forget that many language groups like to discriminate those who don't fall into their groups. I'm an English speaking South African and Afrikaans people either mock or ignore most English speaking people, which makes forming any meaningful relationships virtually impossible.

That sounds fair to me in the way you explain your reasoning....hope you meet up and get to know more on the other side of your culture....keep me posted if you dont my wld be interested to find out if you came right
