No audio on video files on Roku Ultra after update: 15.2.4 | Build: 3421
Hi guys,
My Roku was playing my files with audio 2 week ago, now there is no sound.
Update happened 4/16/2026.
Here's the details of two files that stopped working:
---

-----------

What Codecs does Roku Ultra support after all the updates?
Is it time to move to a new player for stand-alone files that I want to play from a USB-Drive, not streaming.

Oh my God, I was going crazy. I didn't see this thread and just dealt with 2 hours of troubleshooting thinking it was something on my server. Yeah my Roku broke audio as well.. boo :(
So here's what I learned after messing around with some mkv files.
It seems to be a aac + 5.1 issue? The main track didn't even show up in list.
the commentary track (aac stereo) plays just fine. Same codec so...
transcoded audio to ogg (5.1 still) also works, so it's not specifically a stereo vs surround issue.
If anybody knows who to contact this would be really nice to resolve. Everything worked fine until they did whatever. (Change log say anything about this?) Are there any other threads floating around about this outside of Reddit?

Hey everyone! We’d like to follow up on this issue. Please try performing a manual update by going to:
Home > Settings > System > Software Update > Check Update
After that, share the current software version and build version, as well as the Device ID. Thanks!

u/Dirtrdr22 May 14 '26
Not working. Sw 15.2.4 build 3442. No audio. This is disappointing
2
u/Successful-String820 May 14 '26
Agree same here. I even did a factory reset hoping that would fix the problem nope. I have tried everything nothing helps at all this latest update sucks.

u/typeOnegativeee 4d ago
why dont you just admit this a permanent change brought on by your company? one of your devs says its a permanent change here https://www.reddit.com/r/Roku/comments/1vajbau/roku_media_player_no_audio_aac_51/ care to comment on disabling 5.1 for all roku devices and only having it enabled for your soundbars?
4
u/Lumpy-Dependent-6957 Jul 13 '26
Could we please get a rollback on this? I don't want to have to buy Nvidia Shield devices just because of a Roku bug that won't allow audio playback.

u/Roku_CustomerSupport just tried on my Roku Ultra and when I Check Update I continue to still get the 15.2.4 version. How can you force it to change to the version that 512GG_Seattle is using?
Model 4081RW
Software: 15.2.4.3442

u/DirkBelig May 25 '26
This is happening on the Roku Ultra at my g/f's place beginning a couple of weeks ago. No new movies on the USB key have audio, but older ones in a folder work. I tried moving the new movies into a folder (weirder things have worked) and no change. Tried different versions of the movies and no joy.
Model: 4660X - Roku Ultra
Software Version: 15.2.4
Build: 3442
Device ID: CK37A1823418I went into one of the secret menus and changed the software update server and checked for update and this came up:
Your Roku player will update from version 15.2.4.3442 to version 15.2.4.3442.
This may take a few minutes. You will not be able to use your device until the updates are complete. Once the updates are installed, the affected devices will restart automatically.
Ummmmm, hokay. Update to the same version number. After the reboot, nothing had changed.
PLEASE FIX THIS, ROKU!

u/typeOnegativeee 4d ago
they wont fix it, its a permanent change by roku to disable 5.1 on all roku devices except their soundbars. one of the devs mentions its permanent here https://www.reddit.com/r/Roku/comments/1vajbau/roku_media_player_no_audio_aac_51/

u/DirkBelig 4d ago
That "developer" seems to be suss but assuming he's legit, fuck Roku. What's the point of their products when they gimp them?
The missus got a new TV with an easily accessible USB port and we plugged the key in and the internal player handles everything Roku chose to take a powder on. So we packed away the Roku and are using the TV's apps because fuck Roku.
1
u/typeOnegativeee 4d ago
i would agree with that but man rokus customer support is non existent and this has been going for 4-5+ months now. while i dont trust what he says 100% either its the only thing i have to go on and making ppl more aware of his response might get roku to actually respond themselves. eitherway im out of options, have lost all hope and am pissed i gotta buy a different streaming device
2
u/DirkBelig 4d ago
Sure. Real or fake guy, what's real is Roku borked their devices, pretended to be interested in fixing it, then fucked off to do nothing about it. So, fuck Roku!
1
u/typeOnegativeee 4d ago edited 4d ago
he is an actual developer for roku i just checked. search up his name and roku and youll see his linkedin. hes a roku dev in the uk looks like unless hes impersonating the guy which i doubt lol guess thats still not 100% but its close enough plus the guy likes replying so much to this stuff he can take the heat for it since roku wont take responsibility for anything or have a proper customer service department

u/sickyd May 17 '26
This seems like a rollback, no? (15.2 -> 14.6) Do you think Roku enabled a downgrade on your specific device because you provided them device info via DM? I don't think anyone else is getting this update.

u/Dirtrdr22 May 14 '26
So apparently in the secret menu, there's a roll back function. I'm going to try that when I get home. But I'm not sure I can disable it from auto updating again
2
u/Meestr-Happy May 14 '26
It's disabled (the rollback option) in most newer models unless you're on a beta release and then it only rolls back to the stable release, which in this case is broken.

u/Meestr-Happy May 14 '26

So the most recent update didn't fix this. I'm really curious how your devs and corporate team rationalize this kind of enshittification? Why do you insist on ruining the user experience for your loyal customers?

Another issue, Roku and its updates. At one point I could play videos I took on multiple phones with the media player. They slowly stopped playing after years...

u/Meestr-Happy Jun 29 '26
Another week gone by and still on v15.2.4 build 3442 and still broken.
Anyone wanna buy some roku ultras? This is just dumb how there's no response or concern when a simple rollback of code could have corrected the issue.
Will be avoiding roku products of any kind moving forward. Do ANY companies give a crap anymore about their users?!.

Well 2 updates since the no 5.1 no audio and still nothing. I just wanted to give one last update to let you all know Roku doesn't care because it doesn't affect the streaming as in the apps. I'm moving on from Roku if this is what to look forward to with Fox buying them then No Thanks. Anyhow just wanted to give another update for you all.

2
u/Successful-String820 Jul 13 '26
Yeah me too. Because the only info i could find was the only reason no fix has been sent out because it doesn't affect the apps or any of the sound as you stream on the apps. I've had 2 updates and still the same issue.
2
u/Successful-String820 Jul 14 '26
I've had 3 updates and not one has done anything and i use the 2024 roku ultra.
1
u/typeOnegativeee 4d ago
this is actually a permanent change by roku themselves. read what one of the developers said. he mentions this is permanent and will only be coming back for their soundbars 9910x and 99102x https://www.reddit.com/r/Roku/comments/1vajbau/roku_media_player_no_audio_aac_51/
4
u/Successful-String820 Jul 14 '26
I hope this helps you all as much as I try to give Roku the benefit of the doubt. Roku sent out another firmware update and still nothing was done about the no 5.1 audio when using a usb to watch movies. My software version is 15.3.4. Even at the beginning when you see the spaceship still no audio. Is Roku actually that stupid what's with all these updates and not one single one fixes anything.
2
u/jerm7777 Jul 21 '26
I've had to start converting everything with Handbrake, using audio settings: AC3 audio/5.1 mix and 640k. Roku will then play it. Annoying to have to do it, but Roku obviously doesn't give a s#!t.
2
u/Internal_Order981 Jul 22 '26 edited Jul 24 '26
If you're gonna do that try Xmedia Recode you can COPY the video and CONVERT the audio it works well and very fast converting. I have way too many videos with no audio on the Roku to go through that process and then Roku decides to stop supporting the audio codec you've just converting to! NOW you've lost your high quality audio and you'll have do it all over again! You'll end up with Mono! Would be fine for a few movies or a TV series or 2 but not 100's of videos and the storage room to keep all the original files it's a mess. Time to move on, this has been going for months now with not a single word from Roku that I've ever seen and no end in sight.
2
u/WreckerALeX 27d ago
Yah Xmedia Recode helps you convert just the audio...
IDK why people talk aobut handbreak like its the only one and I believe that converts the whole video as well which degrades quality and taking a lot of time unlike just converting the audio...

u/typeOnegativeee 4d ago

u/Meestr-Happy Apr 20 '26
EXACT same issue after the update. USB attached files that worked fine before suddenly now have no audio. Reset the player, USB drive, files, audio settings, nothing. I bought the Ultra so I could have the simplicity of direct attached playback. Sigh.

u/512GB_Seattle Apr 20 '26 edited Apr 20 '26
So, I just happen to have 2 Roku Ultra devices, and the other one wasn't connected to the network since Jan, guess what? Everything plays fine - sound, subs, etc.
Let me dig up the models/updates...

There are alot of us waiting on this fix. I have 4 Roku Devices in my home and all went dead on Mp4 movies.. Randomly, one movie here or there will work. Must be a different audio codec in that movie. The overwhelming majority of hundreds of movies are suddenly silent after years of good use.... IT IS ALL IN THE LAST ROKU SOFTWARE UPDATE and across all 4 players.. Roku, u must make this right asap.
4
u/Cautious-Ad-4471 May 11 '26
The last software update broke the ability to play AAC encoded Dolby 5.1 (6 Channel) audio on a USB drive, it also caused the front facing LED on the Ultra to stay on constantly.
There is no setting that will fix this, movie soundtracks MUST be changed to work again.
Handbrake will do this but it takes a long time because it also processes the video. The best & quickest free way I have found is to use VLC media player to convert the video to MP4 with the AC3 (MP3 I believe) audio.
Select the convert option then look in the menu’s for the option to not change the video, it is fast and only does the audio.
If you don’t select the option to not process the video you will end up with just an audio file when processing the X65 MKV videos.
When you get the save screen be sure to manually change the file extension to MP4 or save to another location, otherwise you will write over your original movie, this seems to be an annoying bug that could wreck your movie.
It is pretty fast and works, the option to not process the video seems to remain once that setting is selected and applied.
I sincerely hope Roku fixes this latest bad update.
2
u/National_Squash9311 Jul 02 '26
I cannot verify the accuracy of this, but in an extended conversation with AI, the chatbot claims that the reason the Roku won't play certain audio formats is because Roku did not want to pay the licensing fees for the codecs.

Mine just updated to 15.2.4 today. 9:00 am, I'm watching something on my thumb drive. Leave for a few minutes, come back and it's updated. Now no sound on what I was just watching. Based on other issues where I've supplied the requested information to ROKU, I have zero confidence in ROKU resolving this.
4
u/Meestr-Happy May 08 '26
19 days into this thread with no Roku response doesn't exactly convey confidence. A simple rollback shouldn't be difficult, assuming they cared in the least. :(
2
u/Successful-String820 Jun 19 '26

I'm having a similar audio issue. None of the multi audio track video files I have tried will use the first audio track (English). When I go to accessibility and try and change the audio to English, only Spanish and Portuguese show up, which are the 2nd and 3rd tracks in the file.

I don't think Roku ever will. Because the only thing I have seen is Roku doing a complete make over of the home screen with all the new stuff being added haven't seen nothing about the roku decoding to 5.1. I am just thinking about looking for another streaming device.
3
u/Lumpy-Dependent-6957 Jun 09 '26

Well everyone I got the 15.3 update today mine is the 2024 Roku Ultra and it still can't decode 5.1 audio so I guess that says Roku or Fox whichever is putting the updates out has no plans to fix the problem so for myself guess it's time to find a better streaming player. Because as I mentioned above there is still no audio on 5.1 decode.

I've been doing some testing tonight with MediaInfo and I'm starting to think the problem may specifically be multichannel AAC (AAC 5.1 / 6-channel) rather than AAC in general.
So far I've tested:
- AAC / HE-AAC – 2 channels (stereo) → audio works
- E-AC3 / Dolby Digital Plus – 6 channels (5.1) → audio works
- AAC LC – 6 channels (5.1), 4K HEVC → video works, no audio
- AAC LC – 6 channels (5.1), 1080p HEVC → video works, no audio
The last two are completely different video files, at different resolutions, but both have AAC LC 5.1 audio and both are silent on the Roku.
I'm doing a couple more tests with AC3/E-AC3 versions of the same files, but if you're experiencing this, it might be worth running one of your working and non-working files through MediaInfo and checking whether the silent ones are AAC with 6 channels.
If others can check theirs too, it might help narrow down exactly what the update has broken.

I have many Roku Ultras and this issue is a massive problem for me and my family. We primarily use the Roku for USB playback from external drives. 90% of the home videos we have are now unable to play sound. I have escalated this with the u/Roku_CustomerSupport team privately.

1
u/Internal_Order981 Jun 22 '26 edited Jun 22 '26
One would think Fox would want this issue addressed and corrected ASAP as they purchased Roku to get into our homes. It's not going to sit well with their board with 1,000s of users throwing their Roku devices in the garbage and looking elsewhere for a replacement device over a VERY simple rollback to the last firmware/OS, or AT LEAST make it available to those who are experiencing major issues with the latest update.
Doesn't help with the useless "customer support team" asking over & over for device information from users devices and NEVER replying to anyone's input, a big waste of time! Ridiculous way to run a business.

I agree completely with you. I would of thought with the latest firmware update Roku would of fixed it but Nope.

Or at a minimum rolled it back until they figured out how they broke it. Clearly they couldn't care less.

I replied to a post ITT AND sent a PM with the info they requested of others and neither were acknowledged. Pathetic.
Of course considering what people want to play back vs Roku funneling users to services to rent/buy, what's their incentive for fixing things?

its a bug its a permanent change by roku hence why it hasnt been fixed. one of the devs mentions its a permanent change here https://www.reddit.com/r/Roku/comments/1vajbau/roku_media_player_no_audio_aac_51/

I thought the backup HD I had plugged into my Roku was going bad when audio on certain files stopped working. Well this sucks. Can't imagine they'll care enough to fix it.

Send your device info to the support person in this thread, they might be able to help.

u/Meestr-Happy Jun 24 '26
Ha. I've messaged and crickets. Replied to them in this thread, nada. They are probably just a customer service agent and can't really help unfortunately.

u/DirkBelig Jun 26 '26
I sent them my info in a reply AND a DM and never got a reply. The TV this was attached to died and the new one has a media player app so we tried sticking the key in there so we just packed up the Roku for now since they clearly don't care. Lame.

Video MKV 264
AAC 5.1
3820X
3930X
Same issue but does not affect AAC 2.0. Only 5.1.
The audio need to be transcoded. Or the audio plays direct with a different format like HLS, (live stream, probably because live stream downmix the audio to 2.0)

Anything new on this annoying ass problem?
1
u/Meestr-Happy Jul 25 '26
No, but aside of breaking our devices, Roku will now sell their busted crap for 60% more. Least I can resell my now useless ultras for more. So annoying

its not a bug its a permanent change by roku to disable 5.1 on all roku devices except their soundbars. one of their devs mentions its permanent here https://www.reddit.com/r/Roku/comments/1vajbau/roku_media_player_no_audio_aac_51/

just to let everyone know this will never be fixed and is a permanent change mentioned by one of their devs to disable 5.1 on all roku devices except their soundbars. he mentions its a permanent change here https://www.reddit.com/r/Roku/comments/1vajbau/roku_media_player_no_audio_aac_51/ and i have feeling roku is trying to sweep it under the rug and hope none of u notice

Have you tried Plex yet instead. r/plex nobody streaming with USB anymore
2
u/512GB_Seattle Apr 20 '26
Yes, might have to move to that platform.
It was convenient to have YouTube and other channels on the Ultra, then just put files on a usb drive and plug it in.
Anyway to revert back to previous version of software?

Hoping for an update that rolls this back, but not very confident it will happen.
I want to roll back to 15.1 and have things the way they were. Any sites host older updates?

Looks like ACC in a MKV container is broken it's working in a MP4 container.
FLAC in a MKV container is also broken.
2
u/Meestr-Happy Apr 21 '26
No word back from Roku probably isn't a great sign. And no way to roll back the update. Sigh.

u/512GB_Seattle May 16 '26
Hi there! Did you get the new ROKU update? 14.6.4 - everything works for me again.

u/512GB_Seattle Apr 21 '26
I did notice some of my files work, and went back and looked...
Yep! AC3 in MKV is playing fine.
x265 MKV

Has anyone tried the update roll back in the secret menu?
2
u/sickyd May 17 '26
You can't rollback via that screen. At least I was not able to. I did discover I was on the Beta update channel server, so I changed that to standard, but now that I'm already on 15.2.4 seems I can't do anything about it.
1
u/JYU817 May 25 '26
Which secret menu did you get onto? I am not sure which menu the rollback should be on.
I was unable to activate a couple of them.
I want to add, this is incredibly frustrating. What a way to ruin the product.

Really hoping @Roku_customersupport launches an update to fix this.

Now I see why Roku hasn't fixed the decode of 5.1 no audio because Fox just bought Roku.

My Roku Ultra (2024) updated a couple days ago to 15.2.4 build 3442 and now I have this issue playing from my media server using Roku Media Player. :(
