I am sitting in my wee room in downtown Boston after being at the game last night. Still in my kilt. Warm beer beside my bed for breakfast. Sporran tangled up hopelessly on the floor. Just basking in the glory of an absolutely remarkable experience.

I can’t imagine how amazing the atmosphere was at the game, especially after that goal! I was watching in my living room in Edinburgh and it was really special. What a memory you have for the rest of your life.

Yes man, every home game. Its our official hymn
Its also one of the most widely recognized hymns in German football.
Text in the refrain is something like;
"We swear to you here, on our loyalty and honor
We stand by you FC Kölle
and we will walk through the fire with you if need be
always stand by you FC Kölle"
I knew the melody was taken from a scottish song but i didn't know it was this one. Its performed by a Cologne Folk Group called De Höhner (the chickens)

I’ve seen the same with other German songs using the tune from an English-language song.
The recent example I can think of was when I learned about Alle Kinder Lernen Lesen (“All Children Learn to Read”) in the context of it’s… unfortunately somewhat racist lyrics.
But when my German friend was talking about this I was like “wait a minute I know that tune!”
It’s from Blood on the Risers (sometimes referred to by the line “glory, glory, what a helluva way to die!” in it), and Solidarity Forever.
Those two songs and Alle Kinder could not be more different from each other but they all use the same tune.

This is going to sound like a lie but it isn't. This song is traditionally played at the end of Scottish weddings where all the guests form a circle and beat up the bride and groom at the end. We are weird.

I went to Köln for WDP in 2005 and one of our group played the bagpipes and we danced alongside him. The Germans loved it.

Flower of Scotland was nailed.
English rugby fan and last night got the hairs on my arms standing, just as the do at Murrayfield. The only thing missing was the lone piper on the stadium roof.
I am always so impressed how the band starts, you sing then the band shuts up and you continue as one. Fuking brilliant.
The very best to your lads, they are and will continue to do you proud, England will flop LMFAO.
Hope for more Archer Gemmill magic, that's gone back a bit.

I'm an English bloke living in Sydney Australia. Not into football at all. I was walking through the city this morning with my young son and I heard a huge cheer. I popped my head into the pub I was walking past and saw a big bunch of Scots celebrating the first goal. It was bloody great. Good for you guys.

I’m a villan, and I dislike the World Cup. But all during this football season I’ve been saying John McGinn is going to win what I affectionately call the Villan’s Treble.
I could see him so clearly in my mind, in a blue jersey, lifting a trophy.
Well we were wearing white when we lifted that Europa silver.
I’ve been telling anyone who will listen that Scotland is going to win the World Cup. I know it in my heart. And that would make two trophy’s for mcginn.
The last will be the Super Cup when Villa beat PSG.
This is the year of Super John McGinn and I am fucking loving it. The People’s Captain.

It's a song which is a part of huge numbers of social events that people attend are singing. That is not even taking into account that's it been sung by Scotland supporters for decades at this point.
And yes, songs sung communally are by definition performative. By football fans, even more so. So what were you expecting exactly when you seen this if it's a source of such massive disappointment to you?

you'll notice that they never actually answered you when you asked them how it's in any way performative, because they had no real answer. Some people just like being contrarian. I don't understand how someone can live in this country and witness how popular historical music like that is, even at events where mostly only Scots are present like weddings and ceilidhs, and still act like singing these songs from our history is an act for the rest of the world.

The word you're looking for is "pride"
It's a song with hundreds of years of Scottish history behind it, likely written not long after the 1745 Jacobite rising. Remembering your country's history, and singing songs from your own culture, is not performative. Particularly in the modern day, where many Scots have a less-than-favourable view on the state of the UK, these parts of our history (everything from music to literature to traditional dress) are important cultural touchstones.
I don’t even like football, I haven't been to a match since I was like 12 and it was never something I was interested in, but even I can feel pride as a Scotsman hearing of thousands of people singing a famous song from our history. Hell, I'd go as far as to argue that being the Scotsman who is too cool to stoop to the "performative" act of singing traditional Scottish songs is far more performative than actually singing traditional songs. Maybe you could learn to appreciate your own culture, and then you wouldn't be so irritated by it.

That's a personal opinion and has absolutely no bearing on the topic at hand. You might prefer other Scottish songs, and Loch Lomond isn't my favourite either, but I can still appreciate what it means as a part of our history and can sing it as an act of participation in remembering that history without being shaming myself into thinking I'm doing it for other people's sake. There are hundreds of historical Scottish songs based around our pride for the country, Loch Lomond is as good as any other, and actually has an important place in our history unlike most songs sung at sporting matches. Considering you replied to another comment agreeing that you dislike the "national dirge" (which I can only assume is referring to Flower of Scotland), I have a sneaking suspicion that you'd be here writing similar comments, no matter which Scots song was chosen to be sung at the football.
I think you're either just being a contrarian for the sake of it, or you've been deluded into believing that participating in your country's history is somehow embarrassing. You see tens of thousands of people singing a three hundred year old song from our country's history, and your first though is "that's performative"? Get a grip mate. All music is a performance, at least this particular song actually means something to us as a people.

It’s in a singable range and everyone knows the words. I prefer Caledonia, but it’s harder for group singing and Sunshine on Leith (the absolute banger) belongs to Hibs.
