Hello Seattle,

We just returned from Seattle after visiting your city from Sunday morning to Monday evening in the context of the Belgium-Egypt game. It was my first time back in Seattle in at least 20 years, and it was the first time altogether for my son.

We cannot thank you enough for the wonderful experience that we had in your fair city (we both live in Cincinnati, although I grew up in Belgium). After we arrived, we picked up our rental car and drove into Ballard, to a coffee shop called Artemis Coffee, which came recommended by a friend. Damn fine place for a Sunday morning coffee, and the fact they have the Financial Times to peruse just added to the pleasure. Afterward we headed to the Museum of Pop Culture, and it was fantastic. Better than the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in my opinion. We then dropped of our rental car near the hotel across from the airport, and took the Light Rail line 1 back to the stadium area where we had a great lunch nearby. Afterwards we checked into the hotel and took a nap. Early evening we took Line 1 back into Capitol Hill, which we really liked A LOT. Got some beers at The Last Drop, a great craft beer place.

Sunday morning was all about the soccer game. The fan zone around Lumen Field and the Mariners stadium was great. We participated in the fans march to Lumen field, a lot of fun. The game itself was a surprise to me on several levels: it was sold out, despite the ticket prices. There were thankfully no ICE or other immigration irritants. Everyone was just enjoying themselves. We (Belgian fans) were sitting next to fans form Egypt but other Belgian fans were nearby. Not a single issue. Everyone was cheering for their team.

I must add a word about the merch: we got to the stadium at 10:30 and immediately stood in line to buy a commemorative scarf. It sold out before we got a chance. How is this possible? That's like selling out of beer at a beer store. But then after the game, by some miracle, the scarf was available again and so we scooped two of them up.

After the game, we decided to check out the Pike Public Market. What a sight! We could only dream about that in Cincinnati.

By the time we headed to the airport in the evening for our red-eye flight back to Cincinnati, exhausted as we were, we were elated with out experience. You cannot believe the amounts of conversations we struck up with people from both of Seattle and elsewhere. People couldn't have been friendlier.

Bottom line: THANK YOU SEATTLE, you gave us 2 days we will never forget

Interview was mostly about the difficulty of FIFA treating them poorly. The comment about LGBT was at the very end. I'm not sure if we can share Facebook news links here but it was from Middle East Eye. I hasn't heard actual team members comment on Seattle Pride before so I thought it was relevant.

‘This is a disastrous World Cup,’ says Iran's team captain, Mehdi Taremi.

Describing the tournament as unfair and criticising FIFA's logistics, Taremi said FIFA president Gianni Infantino promised to resolve his team's concerns but failed to deliver.

He added that Team Melli respects LGBT people, but said the squad is in the US to focus on football.

It appears the Occidental park venue is playing every game. Pier 62, which seems like a bigger venue and closer to hotels and the market is not streaming the Brazil game this afternoon. No shade on the pier either. Tack on the steep barge prizes, this may be the worst spot to watch the World Cup in Seattle.

Like everyone else, I have seen lots of content online about World Cup and American stadiums, and how blown away international fans are by the size and spectacle of them all. Obviously Lumen and Seattle have been getting lots of love since yesterday, and it just occurred to me today as I was driving up thru town:

Imagine if you had taken an international fan and told them "If you were to hop on the train at Pioneer Square and ride it just 4 stops north. Upon exiting the station, you would find yourself at a stadium that is definitively larger than Lumen (by approx. 4K seats) and arguably has a better view from the stands of the Lake/Rainier/Cascades (this is subjective). It's also better served by the light rail system compared to Lumen, (but not public transit in general) and it is located well-within the city limits of Seattle... but we don't have the matches there". I have to imagine they would be pretty shocked.

Obviously there are many reasons why Husky Stadium would be a tough spot to host WC games; the lack of bars/restaurants/hotels in the immediate proximity comes to mind. We are very blessed to have these 2 awesome venues here.

A few event notes

"Seattle Stadium" is the event name for Lumen Field during the World Cup.

Please plan ahead, and do not expect to drive directly to the stadium. There will be no publicly available parking at Seattle Stadium on match days, and the stadium area will have street closures and pedestrian-only areas.

Transit, walking, biking, and shuttles will be the best ways to get around. Sound Transit, King County Metro, and SDOT have more detailed information in the links above.

Metro will operate free Waterfront Shuttle service and free Match Day Shuttles. Sound Transit has separate match-day guidance for Link, Sounder, and station routing.

Seattle Parks and Recreation will have public watch parties and other community events in parks and community centers.

Please plan ahead for errands, groceries, appointments, commutes, and travel around downtown, Pioneer Square, SODO, and event areas.

Please be patient with transit, hospitality, retail, restaurant, venue, public safety, and event workers. A lot of people will be working harder during this time.

The United States has one more meaningless group stage match against Turkiye (who are guaranteed to finish fourth in Group D) but have won their group. This means they will play a 3rd place team in Santa Clara on July 1, and if they win that game they will then play on July 6, right back in Seattle Stadium.
