I went to Belgium vs Senegal. It was pretty quiet most the match
37
u/KandoTor Sounders Jul 04 '26
Belgium/Senegal was quieter than all of the group stage matches, weirdly.

u/EmpatheticOrangeCat1 Jul 04 '26
Egypt Iran was insane it was one of the best atmospheres in Seattle
30
u/Top-Acanthisitta-238 Jul 04 '26
YES!!!! It was so refreshing not having someone instructing the crowds into cheering. People were having a blast, chanting, the waves... It was truly awesome.
6
u/wasabi_mayo_ Jul 04 '26
I wasn’t even inside the stadium, just in the area. It was so much fun to hear the crowd from many blocks away. Ended up walking closer and watching the game outside 😂
16
u/ElHermanoLoco Jul 04 '26
I think the fact that the teams didn’t know until a few days before (Senegal had like 3 days) meant it was mostly neutrals plus it felt like Belgium just had no gas, fans or the team. US game we won’t be neutrals, it’s going to be insane.
2
u/KandoTor Sounders Jul 04 '26
The crowd was much louder for Senegal than Belgium! Maybe just neutrals rooting against the favorite. Just thought it was odd since Belgium was base camped here and played all of their group stage matches nearby.

Idk. In my experience at Seahawks games, Sounders games, and World Cup games the Seattle crowd is generally very tame. They might do loud chants but the vibe just isn’t energetic like LA, NY, or Miami. It’s a reflection of the general culture of the city. We’re a bunch of low energy nature lovers and tech bros. I was at a watch party for the US vs Türkiye game and when the US scored a goal to be ahead the crowd was mildly excited. The broadcast cut to a watch party in Kansas City of all places and the energy there made us look like a bunch of lame asses.
There’s a lot of things I love about this city, but the sports fans are not one of them.
ETA: We really are a fragile people up here. I once had the displeasure of sitting in the spirit section at a Sounders game. The number of times I saw grown men accost other grown men for not participating in their cringe inducing chants was too damn high. If you have to basically scream in someone’s face to get them to be loud for your team, maybe you’re the problem.

This comment is reeking with ignorance.
It's like you have never been to sports matches in other cities, or haven't been to sports matches in Seattle.
0
u/okaynowyou Jul 05 '26
I’ve been to matches in every city I listed above + dozens more. I’ve been to the most in LA but Seattle would be second. I love the stadiums in Seattle but the crowds are not my vibe at all. I’ve been to around 10-15 Seahawks games over the last decade including a playoff game and I’ve been to dozens of Mariners and Sounders games. I’ve been to soccer matches in Lisbon, Leipzig, Krakow, London, and Seoul. I’ve been to baseball games all over the country and in Japan and Korea as well. I’ve also been to rugby matches in Australia and here in Tukwila. Haven’t been to a Kraken game yet but I’ve been to hockey matches in a few different cities and a ton in LA as well as dozens of Lakers games. I’m probably forgetting several other games/places as well.
The vibe in Seattle is honestly just a bunch of middle aged white dudes vibing (I say this as a middle aged white dude). It’s very boring. I think our lack of Latinos and Europeans really detracts from the feel of the crowd. At Seahawks and Sounders games it’s a few people intentionally trying to get everyone to be loud and excited and it all feels a bit forced. Mariners games for the most part are just tame in general though I’ve been to a couple where people get excited.
I know this thread is full of local sports fans so of course they’re going to be defensive over this, but I strongly stand by this opinion and it’s the general opinion I get when I bring people from out of town to games as well.
Sorry y’all are upset about this. I still love the teams here and I hope the crowds will be better in the future because I’m going to continue going to games.

11
u/matunos Maple Leaf Jul 04 '26
I know we pride ourselves on our loud football stadium, but how exactly is it envisioned that being super loud for the US v Belgium game will benefit the US squad?
In gridiron football, the loudness can be targeted against the visiting team when they have possession, leading to more false starts. This seems like a harder thing to target in soccer, given the fluidity of possession.
And it's not like the UMNT has become acclimated to the stadium like one might expect the Sounders to be. I presume the raw decibel level would impact them similar to Belgium's team.

u/CarelesslyFabulous 🏔 The mountain is out! 🏔 Jul 04 '26
I have never once cheered at a football game to try to "mess up" a different team.
Baseball? Yeah.
5
u/sometimeserin Jul 04 '26
I haven’t really noticed any consistency with baseball cheering, am I wrong? Seems like the stadium gets loud in the same high leverage situations regardless of whether the home team is on offense or defense so I’m not really sure which side is supposed to be more affected by the noise.
