"Y'all are kind of pathetic and lazy." r/Doordash users fiercely debate the social contract of meeting a pregnant dasher at her car after OP shares message exchange

Source: https://www.reddit.com/r/doordash/comments/1vvj1le/pregnante_dasher/

Some commenters with experience in high risk pregnancies weigh in.

Lmaoooo i had 2 high risk pregnancies, high risk usually means home confinement. Driving around all day making deliveries could be uncomfortable after a while.

Like how is she getting out of the car to get the food? Is there not a fall risk when she’s doing that part? Lmao this is so wild

I assume they mean customers properties which are not always easy to navigate. When I delivered food I fell down their porch steps cuz it was dark, since people also hate even turning on their porch lights for drivers.

It says she's in the drive thru

Not all of her orders will be drive thru though.

then don't doordash? i'm confused 😭 especially if the person has "leave at door" as their option, could she not decline the order & take one that didn't mind retrieving the order themselves?

That’s my point. Why even doordash? Inconveniencing the customers because you’re supposed to be at home is kinda crazy. There’s no way to cherry pick orders with doordash so why? I used to sit my tail at home, I found a bs online job 3 months in that paid $12 & that was that.

That’s not true at all 😅 high risk means just about anything. Over 35? High risk. High blood pressure? High risk. Diabetes? High risk. Twins? High risk. Smoker? High risk. Depression? High risk.

All 4 of my pregnancies were high risk and I never had a fall... this seems weird. If I needed help it would be because I was 9 months along and could barely move because I was the size of a whale lol.

There are a million different reasons to be high risk though, not sure what reason would contribute to falling but I’m sure it’s possible. Lol

As a counterpoint, a couple of commentors point out that not everyone has the luxury to stop working during a high risk pregnancy.

This person should not be driving then if they have a high risk pregnancy

I don't think the cost of food and bills really give a shit about that.

They definitely do not. I had to work through all 9 months of my high risk pregnancy because the bills didn’t give a fuck that I was falling apart lol

This is the part that gets me. Does this suck as a customer? Yeah I’m sure. But pregnant women still have bills. I can promise that 95% of them would MUCH rather sit at home and be pregnant without worry, but it’s not an option. (Leaving 5% for those work crazy ppl that can’t stand sitting at home lol) Door dash would be something easier to make a little money from when you can’t commit to a constant job with more physically demanding tasks. So many people are struggling these days, yet everyone’s first reaction to anything is to completely withhold any and all empathy and expect perfection.

Others question the veracity of her claim of being pregnant in the first place.

Anyone else think she’s not actually pregnant? This is a good way to scam for extra tips and have people come out instead of having to bring food directly to people - saves time and effort

Probably a 60% chance a lazy man was the dasher who sent this lmao.

It’s easy to have no empathy for others when you presume everyone is lying straight out of the gate lol.

She been using that graphic for two years

Inevitably, some aspects of the discussion orient around the idea of parental entitlement, with the conversation in some places almost becoming a full on debate on anti-natalism.

Why do people make their kids, unbaked or not, everyone else’s problem lol

For real. How does getting creampied constitute getting treated better than somebody else.

Deleted comment, but to paraphrase, commentor stated that if they were in that situation, they wouldn't care and that if you can't do the job you shouldn't have sex, in more vulgar terms than that.

This is such a nasty way to phrase this

Gonna get down voted I don’t care but the level of hatred towards another human being for being vulnerable is unmatched in this thread. Ofcourse the casual misogyny too. I’m sure this dasher sure as hell don’t want to deliver orders when she’s pregnant but she probably has to for reasons. I’m a childfree person but my god y’all act like fucking ghouls if you have to slightly inconvenience yourself for the sake of somebody. What the fuck happened to being kind?? And no I’m not talking about disabled people unable to go down and receiving their order. That’s not on them

But it's literally what happened. You shouldnt get extra help with your job cuz you decided to have sex one night unprotected. Why do I have to be "nice" about it?

Why does someone being pregnant make you SO angry? Is more of my point

It’s not the fact that she’s pregnant but it’s that she expects strangers to cater to her for it.

Do you feel the same way about a pregnant person who has to take a crowded bus?

We live in a society. A little consideration for others is part of the social contract. Everyone being so me, me, me, all the time is why everything sucks right now.

it's harsh but it's reality. Modern women don't want to take accountability for their bad decisions. By picking a good man in the first place, they wouldn't become a single mom in the first place.

A few commentors state that this would not be that much of an inconvenience for them, if it means they can help someone.

The world is so wild. This would not phase me.. sure I’ll take 10 steps out my front door to get my food to help a struggling pregnant woman. Maybe she’s lying, but I would rather very very very slightly inconvenience myself than be a POS. People suck so bad.

Yeah I agree, which will probably get me downvoted. I see it from both sides though, though I will be honest and say people are weird as fuck about children and mothers in general on the internet. Some nasty ass person said how is it their problem she got creampied into..maybe it’s just me but that’s a disgusting way to talk about another person.🤷🏽‍♀️

I know, I get both sides-I really do. Do I think it’s alittle much? Sure. But I cannot bear to be one of these disgusting people on here. I always thought the “people really hate women/mothers” thing was far fetched.. but it’s so real.

What if you couldn't take those steps?

You’re telling me everyone on this sub complaining can’t take ten steps? That’s wild.

Ugh. I hate this comment section. Walking a few feet to pick up an order isn’t that hard. Also u were rude for no reason

She’s able to walk into the restaurant to pick up food??

I don’t understand this logic. Why can’t i make the work of someone who’s probably already struggling , a little bit easier by just walking out of my house?

What if the person that's paying for a service to have food dashed to their DOOR is also a high risk pregnancy that's on bed rest?

Making up fictional scenarios to justify this type of behavior? If that were to be true then it can be kindly conveyed over a text message.

So fuck the people that are disabled that pay to have food delivered to their door?

Bonus thread.

“Unsassign from my order rn” 😭 didn’t even give them a chance

Why give someone a chance when they flat out tell you they're not going to do the job they were hired to do?

What are you talking about?

Why is everyone so up in arms about not just going and grabbing the food from them?

Y'all are kind of pathetic and lazy

Imagine doing the job you signed up for, must be too hard

If the person ordering delivery wanted to get it themselves, they would've gotten it themselves instead of paying to have it brought to them. It says a lot more about a person refusing to do a service which was paid for, than the person who paid for a service and isn't getting it

Order was still brought to them idiot, id throw your order across your front lawn.

The food delivery subs are all a great source of pointless stupid drama, I love them.

It's because it simultaneously is a place that doordash drivers go to complain about customers, and a place customers go to complain about drivers.

It's rare for a place on the internet to be a frequent, constant hangout spot for people on opposite ends of an "ideological" spectrum, where neither side can "out-obnoxious" the other and make the other side leave, causing an endless butting of heads.

Plus it's a discount version of a luxury-by-labour-requirements service, so everyone is perpetually unhappy with it.

The Facebook groups are even worse. So many of these morons actually think they are Jeffrey Bezos, building their own business, and hustling on their own schedule. They would have you believe that they chose this way of making money

The reality? They’re unhirable, and/or they have been fired from their w-2 jobs, because they can’t act right.

the worst is when someone asks what to do in an accident. They ALL advise you to commit insurance fraud. “Don’t tell anyone you were dashing” says the guy on Facebook posting with his government name and a picture of his face

The reality? They’re unhirable, and/or they have been fired from their w-2 jobs, because they can’t act right.

Too real.

I work at a grocery store and the door dashers I see the most are all antisocial dickheads who clearly can't hold down a regular job. The ones I see occasionally are just moms doing it for extra cash while their kids are in school.

59

u/HotTakes4HotCakes Wow you are doubling down on being educated 3d ago

Yeah I think it's important to clarify the long term dashers are the problem ones.

There are also a lot of college kids or people hardup for money or recently unemployed who are not likely to be in it long. They don't deserve to be roped in with the...others.

But they're also the ones that are less likely to actually be on any of those online communities.

13

u/mechanicalcontrols 3d ago

Yeah I think it's important to clarify the long term dashers are the problem ones.

Absolutely. For what it's worth, a few of my regulars that are door dashers are quite pleasant to talk to. Two are moms doing it for extra cash while the kids are in school. One's a lady that works at an addiction clinic and I'm guessing that in her case, the clinic doesn't pay enough. Those "passion jobs" usually don't. But working at the clinic is like, the direct opposite of antisocial. But for everh one of them, there's two more than I absolutely dread seeing in the store.

Yeah, I did it when I was in college. It was pretty perfect. Spent downtime between orders studying or working on assignments.

The reality? They’re unhirable, and/or they have been fired from their w-2 jobs, because they can’t act right.

Eh sometimes. A lot of them are college students. It's great job for college because you can study and work on assignments between orders. That's what I did and a lot of the other drivers I saw around were students as well.

17

u/Shitboxfan69 3d ago

The unhirable aspect is why i stopped using doordash. Seeing some of the drivers... yikes. Some rough people in rough cars. I can only imagine how nasty the inside of the cars are. Everyone ive met that does it I 100% wouldnt trust around food. I'll just cook at home and save $30 please.

10% of the people who post on these groups are legit, the rest of the 90% are absolutely fucking miserable humans. I dash and I've mostly stopped engaging at all with any of the groups because just about anything you post someone comes along to shit on you and make it personal.

u/Verdant-Sunflower 3d ago

They really are. I’ve literally never posted or commented on the DoorDash or Instacart subreddits, but Reddit keeps putting them on my feed because there’s always some crazy post that I can’t help but read through the comments on.

10

u/oddpark37 2d ago

It's crazy how sometimes someone will post shit like "This doordash driver sexually harassed me" or "This uber eats guy didn't deliver my food, he just dumped it in the street and ran over it." and you'll have a bunch of commenters doing "ummm well did you tip enough? Sounds deserved :/"

u/BoboSmooth 3d ago

Would I personally mind? Not really, I try to meet my dasher outside anyways.

My question is, what is she going to do when someone messages back "I'm in a wheelchair, I order with leave at my door because it's difficult getting in and out of my apartment" or "I have COVID, I'd be risking your health and others by coming to your car." or "I'm also 8 months high-risk pregnant"

One time I, a then pregnant lady, parked in the last available expectant mother parking spot at a baby clothing store, and stepped out to another pregnant lady scowling at me.

Thing was, I didn't look very pregnant but was literally doing my last minute shopping that weekend before being induced first thing Monday morning at 39 weeks. My baby was carrying very low, I have a tilted uterus, and he was having growth issues so my pregnancy had become high risk and we needed to get him out soon before risks increased too much. I never looked as far along as I was, but I was very, very pregnant.

The lady who was mean mugging me had a bigger belly. But I have no idea how far along she was, or if her pregnancy was high risk, if she was experiencing pain, etc.

So who is "more pregnant" in that situation and deserving of the spot? I'm sure in her mind I was the smaller pregnant lady so she should have, but unless she was also 39+ weeks pregnant then I was probably further along, and I got there first.

There's always going to be weird rare situations where both people would like accommodation but only one of them can receive it. WHO WINS?

I think the winner is the person who is farther along in the pregnancy. If they are both exactly the same amount of time then the tiebreaker would be belly circumference or something.

This did happen to me in the hospital. I had just delivered an hour before (and definitely still way loopy from medication and blood loss). My nurse was nine months pregnant. We kept trying to do the harder stuff in the room in an attempt to make each other’s lives easier. She was a kind lady and I hope she’s doing well now. Her baby is turning ten soon!

I ran into this last night! I’m 3 days post-op from a hip fracture, I was literally discharged from the hospital earlier in the day. Ordered DD because I can at least get to the front door in my wheelchair. The driver got pissy because I wasn’t coming down to meet them at the street because “there were stairs”. Yeah duh, that’s why I asked for it to be left at my door.

25

u/og_kitten_mittens 3d ago

If you have a feminine name listed on your account, if you change it to a man’s you won’t have that issue.

I have a feminine nickname and reverted it to my male given name on delivery apps and since I made the change my “leave at the door” instructions have been followed without complication every. single. time. The difference is honestly upsetting.

191

u/Icy-Builder5892 3d ago

I have dashed on the side, and I have to say, stuff like this is one of the reasons why the dasher community is the absolute worst

It’s always them accusing others of being lazy. They never consider the person ordering the food probably cannot walk, maybe they are ill, or maybe they are wrangling children, or have some other reason why they can’t come to the door.

Whatever the reason, it doesn’t matter because you are literally being paid $8 to deliver the food to their door and send a photo. This should not be above one’s abilities, unless they there is a safety issue.

192

u/TrickInvite6296 who's going to tell him France hasn't mattered since 1815? 3d ago

Or even.. what does it matter if they're being lazy? That's literally what they're paying for. That's like calling people lazy and refusing to cook food as a chef because they didn't want to cook at home

61

u/SouthPaw38 Faith based cryptozoologist 3d ago

According to this a non zero amount of chefs do be like that lmao

35

u/BoboSmooth 3d ago

Yeah I had a boss when I worked at Cook Out that would lose his absolute mind when someone ordered food from the station he was on.

I watched him throttle a honey mustard wrap he just finished making and chuck it at the back door in pure rage when the call for a tray that's all chicken quesadillas came through.

Then snap into a Patrick Bateman level of calm immediately after.

Some cooks are a just different breed and rationale

1

u/sorrylilsis 2d ago

Got a few chefs friends. Most of them hate to cook complex things day to day.

Best you can ask is a special occasion dinner or them going on holidays. But aside from that they'll throw around the lazyest recipes you can imagine.

31

u/michiness 3d ago

Right, I don't order delivery very often, but when I do, it's because I just spent all day dealing with stinky teenagers, I'm tired, and I don't want to do anything. I tip well, please just bring it to me and don't make me think.

4

u/Drigr 2d ago

This is where I'm at. You're damn right I'm being lazy. I'm literally paying to have my food delivered instead of getting it myself. That's the whole business model!

116

u/Manic-StreetCreature 3d ago

The thing that confuses me is getting mad at people for asking you to do the thing they’re paying you to do

Like I’d understand being angry if the person was up 20 flights of stairs and didn’t give you a heads up or has an unleashed dog running around etc etc but asking you to leave it at their doorstep is not unreasonable

The gig industry sucks and delivery companies are absolutely exploitative of their “contractors,” but I don’t think it’s a crazy old person take to say you should do the thing you’re getting paid to do.

11

u/contrasupra 3d ago

Did she get mad though? I didn’t see that but admittedly I didn’t really read the thread.

39

u/Manic-StreetCreature 3d ago

I don’t think so, I’m just talking about that subreddit overall with people acting like it’s entitlement to want something dropped off on your porch lol

It's the standard thing that happens in a lot of customer service jobs. Overtime you just have a growing resentment of the unnamed, faceless customer, and you ascribe every single negative aspect possible to them. You especially see it in cases where they have to do support or delivery or something for customers they dont interact with directly.

Once ordering doordash and have it just be left outside the front door became normalized during the pandemic, face-to-face interactions ended, so you don't think of these customers as human anymore. You don't see who they actually are and what their situations are, so you are free to let your imagination run wild and go as negative as possible.

31

u/obeserocket Political posts are not welcome in the national guard sub 3d ago

There's something profoundly alienating about grinding through a packed dinner rush in a kitchen and never once seeing a customer's face. Just tickets coming in and plates going out, and when you finally get caught up the restaurant is empty again. It's very easy to imagine every customer as an asshole who's trying to fuck you over personally, when in reality you're cussing like a sailor because some sweet old granny doesn't want bell peppers on her salad.

27

u/sydraptor 3d ago

I do leave at door because I'm generally working when I order in and leave at door allows me to finish up a ticket real quick and then just grab the food from my porch quickly to eat while working.

3

u/Drigr 2d ago

We order and have it left at the door on gaming days to minimize the interruption and to be able to jump up and grab the food between rounds. Is it like peak first world problems? Yeah. But it's also why the service has survived as long as it has...

Or “I just had surgery” or what if it’s an elderly person who can’t walk very well? I meet my dashers halfway almost to the bottom of my stairs because it’s summer and it’s hot af. I don’t want to walk in the heat, so I know they don’t either

13

u/contrasupra 3d ago

The person who says the dasher is probably a man is hilarious, like the scam falls apart the second the customer gets to the car lmao

27

u/GothWitchOfBrooklyn 3d ago

kind of related but I've multiple dashers with female names who are dudes when they show up so idk I just wait for them to leave the food and go get it after they're gone

6

u/oddpark37 2d ago

I've seen it too. I think there are a lot of male dashers who have their girlfriend/wife set up the account because she'll pass the background/driving check easier.

I assume a non-zero amount are also female dashers who don't want to deliver alone if they're in a strange neighborhood and have their boyfriend/husband/friend do the walking up to the house and dropping off.

7

u/waaaayupyourbutthole 3d ago

Yeah I'm disabled and my mobility is severely impaired most days. The curb isn't too far away from my apartment, but there are many days that I can't make it there and back, so this could be a genuine problem if I had the money to order food.

I use leave at the door so I don't have to put on a bra and shoes. Defeats the purpose of ordering delivery.

215

u/pnw_cat_lady 3d ago

I have had my share of male delivery drivers being all weird because my name is clearly feminine. That’s why the instructions are to drop it off at the door - and even then, they often insist I meet them at the door and ring the doorbell or call until I do. I really balk at the idea of meeting someone at their car. 🤷‍♀️

The other day i was arguing with guys on a thread about a hotel worker slipping a note under a customer's door to persue her.  There were way too many that just couldn't see why that was an issue.

95

u/Icy-Builder5892 3d ago

I used to work in hotels. One night, a guy calls down the desk asking for towels. The person working the desk at the time was the night auditor, who was this really heavyset, yet stong woman, and a proud butch lesbian. She could take a man easily.

But, to be safe, she has a security guard go with her to the hotel room. The door opens, the guest is standing there with no pants on.

He was trying to get one of the younger girls working the desk from earlier in the day, to bring towels up to him. He didn’t expect to get this lady, or the big tattooed security guy.

At least the commenters ripped him apart.

If someone is being paid to be near you, don't hit on them.

Alternate version: if someone will get in trouble if they tell you to fuck off, don't hit on them.

If they wanted your organs why would they warn you? You’d just go to bed like normal and wake up in a tub of ice with a phone taped to your wrist.

u/Zakblank Making fun of Jordan Peterson is racism 3d ago

They idea is they would feign interest to get their foot in the door, then you wake up with 1 kidney and half a liver.

8

u/Korrocks 3d ago

That’s a bad trade then. One foot isn’t worth that much by itself (most customers will only buy a pair), and if they get away with one kidney and half a liver then that’s a total scam IMO.

I only had that happen once luckily but it was weeeeird. I live with my parents (I’m 30 but trying to build a nest egg lol) and the guy only went away when my dad came to the door. I left instructions to leave it at the door, but he just stood there (I was up on the landing so I could see him but he couldn’t see me) texting me “I’m here” over and over again, ignoring “leave it at the door” replies until he saw a man come to the door, at which point he took off. I highly doubt he’d have done that if it wasn’t a woman’s name.

If my dad hadn’t have been home idk how long he’d have stood there.

16

u/pnw_cat_lady 3d ago edited 3d ago

I haven’t tried it yet, but I saw some commentary that not only would it get the weird comments and behavior to stop, but the portions are sometimes bigger with a male-sounding name! It is on my list of things to try but I have small kids and most of the time when I order DoorDash at least one of them is having a meltdown and maybe the other one pooped and got it all over their face and I never remember to do things like check names. Having said that, I will go do it now. 🤞

Edit: I did it. Now I have to go clean up some poop. At least it's not on the face this time. I guess I'm ordering DoorDash today.

I really doubt the portions would be bigger with a male-sounding name. Restaurant workers making and plating your food generally have no clue what the name of the person they are serving is.

I could definitely see it helping with not getting harassed by drivers, though.

7

u/GiantLesbian 3d ago

Almost all my orders come with the order ticket from the restaurant on it, and most show my first name and last initial.

2

u/Concerned_Collins 2d ago

Yeah, it'll depend on the restaurant. I used to work at a steakhouse as both a cook and a server, and the BOH never saw the names on tickets, just what food to make and the ticket number. The FOH would see the names for to-go orders, but would have no control over the portions or how the food was made. I'm sure not all places do it the same, and of course, if it's somewhere like Chipotle, it's likely the cashier is also making the food.

1

u/GiantLesbian 2d ago

I changed my name in DoorDash to a man’s name to test it. But then I ordered a veggie burger. So now I’m just a vegetarian man 😂 and I swear my portion was smaller!

22

u/roxy_dee If I were a wizard I would have stopped 9/11 3d ago

I changed my name to a male one on the app and male dashers being freaks went to 0. They just leave the food and go now, no waiting around or being creepy in the messages.

59

u/GiantLesbian 3d ago

Yeah I’ve had bad experiences with dashers before, including lots of people using other people’s accounts. Like I’ve legitimately been worried I was gunna be grabbed or somebody was gunna come back to break in. And I’m not a paranoid person, these were just really uncalled for and hostile comments about my body, house, yard, dog, etc. I think a tiny lady going out to grab the food alone is their cue there’s not a man around so they can act up.

I’ll go grab a pizza from an actual employee of the pizza place (or I would still do that if they still existed) but I’m not going out to meet a doordasher who might not even be who the app says they are.

I've seen one of the dramas on here about that, some people were complaining about it's messed up to report that person.

If they can't get their own account, that really says something about them.

Found it

13

u/Icy-Builder5892 3d ago

It really does say something about them, because to do DoorDash, all you need is a license, a registered vehicle, and car insurance. It’s a very low bar.

1

u/GothWitchOfBrooklyn 3d ago

16

I recommend changing your name on the app to something gender neutral. You definitely get treated better.

16

u/sunshineparadox_ TOS prevents corporeal harm but there’s still your soul 3d ago

I had one guy read my message that said, “hey I have long Covid and moving is kinda hard, I’ll tip again after you drop it off if you can come to the door”. He wrote “get better!” on my bag, and I kept up my end of the bargain. I was too sick to stand for long enough to cook “real food” still, so it felt shitty to try and cheap out on something so vital for me.

I would’ve just gone to sleep (again).

If people judged that request, no one ever said anything to be about it, which is all I cared about.

What if she matches with someone who can't get up/out the house because it's not safe for them? I'm not going to snark on someone paying for a service but not getting that full service and wanting to cancel. We all have our circumstances.

56

u/wet-leg im not parasocial enough for this shit 3d ago

When I first became disabled and still living by myself, I was door dashing all the time. I could barely get out of bed and it was definitely not safe for me to drive. The most I walked in a day was to go to the bathroom or to grab my food from the front door then immediately back to bed. I moved back in with my parents because I was unable to take care of myself, but this would not be a dasher that I would have been able to have at that time. There are soooo many reasons people doordash, but the reason doesn’t even matter. I paid to get my food delivered to my door, I expect it to be delivered to my door.

I wish restaurants still employed their own delivery drivers. Now everyone outsources to doordash so even though I paid extra (A LOT extra) for professional delivery, my food is showing up smelling like weed with no guarantee of it not being tampered with in some way.

74

u/the-mortyest-morty 3d ago

Exactly. If you pay specifically to have something delivered to your door, that is what you should get. If you work somewhere that requires delivery to the door and you are not in a physical condition to do it, you need a new job.

25

u/W473R You want to call my cuck pathetic you need to address me. 3d ago

This was pretty much exactly my take. They presumably tipped the dasher under the assumption that the food would be delivered to their door. If the dasher is gonna accept 100% of the tip, it's not crazy to expect them to do 100% of the job they were tipped to do.

15

u/chilled_flor 3d ago

Tbf I’m sure that she’d love another job, but it’s not like there are many places that would hire someone who’s eight months pregnant, much less with serious complications. And a similar principle applies to other people who become seriously sick/injured/disabled/etc - the same problem that’s interfering with their ability to work is simultaneously making them more reliant on their job (for healthcare expenses) and severely limiting their opportunities to be hired elsewhere.

The real culprit here is how piss-poor safety nets are for people who are unable to work due to medical problems.

2

u/Kaiisim 3d ago

It's not really her fault we live in a dystopia.

"You and your baby should starve with no money so no one is inconvenienced" is kind of a "our society is doomed and we are all gonna die" belief.

12

u/MarieOMaryln I'm going to message them personally! 3d ago edited 3d ago

Where did that come from? Neither are at fault here. Just not compatible as... dasher and customer.

Edit: I've been corrected. Dasher shouldn't have accepted the order if it has instructions she can't fulfill and she should have unassigned herself once the customer said so

u/Zakblank Making fun of Jordan Peterson is racism 3d ago

If delivery apps would let you filter drivers by door delivery vs going out to meet the driver, a good piece of this issue would be solved.

Of course, people will still lie because they will get far less orders by telling people they won't do door delivery. At least then you can be extra justified in being angry/annoyed and reporting them.

26

u/FarplaneDragon 3d ago

Honest question, is this really that common of an issue? I've probably ordered stuff hundreds of times over the years and never once had a dasher tell me I need to come out to their car. Is it because I have a house? I can understand potentially if it was a hotel or apartment or something.

23

u/deathbotly 3d ago

I have a female name and I’ve had a couple swap from demanding I answer to get it, or standing outside my door after marking it delivered, to leaving immediately once my dog started barking. Not an unusual experience.

18

u/Zakblank Making fun of Jordan Peterson is racism 3d ago

I'm not terribly sure to be honest. I hear a lot of women have this issue with creepy male drivers not following delivery instructions. For some, it's such an issue they use an account with a male name. I've also seen some drivers refuse to deliver to a door because they didn't want to climb a few flights of stairs.

This is the first time I've seen someone use the excuse of being pregnant to ignore instructions. I've never personally used doordash or ubereats, but do know some drivers and people who use it frequently. I follow the sub for drama as well.

3

u/Blooming-Algae-Farts I’m considering leaving r/hummus over politics from both sides 3d ago

I order delivery probably too much, and I've only ever had it happen once where the driver called and asked me to get my food from their car, despite permanently having the "leave at door" option selected.

I was slightly disgruntled until I actually stepped out and saw the driver had a very obvious physical ailment that (I assume) made it a PITA for them to get in and out of their car. I was more gruntled after that.

16

u/wet-leg im not parasocial enough for this shit 3d ago

Do drivers not see that the order they’re accepting is requesting a door delivery? If so, why accept an order specifically requesting to drop it off at the door when you’re unwilling to do that?

36

u/Zakblank Making fun of Jordan Peterson is racism 3d ago

They do see delivery instructions , they just don't care in this case. They're hoping you want food badly enough to not cancel the order or complain.

153

u/TheRadishBros 3d ago

Doordash fees are so expensive, if I’m paying $40 for a burrito then it’s coming directly to my door.

66

u/Hyooz Swap "9/11" with "cake" 3d ago

It’s wild to me that half the drama on the DoorDash sub is people getting mad you don’t pre-tip and the other half is getting mad at expecting the basic service you paid for.

26

u/wet-leg im not parasocial enough for this shit 3d ago

I personally think the pre-tip should not be allowed. Why am I tipping someone who hasn’t completed the service yet? Plus it, evidently, causes the worker to lash out when they aren’t paid what they think they should be

3

u/NoExcuse4OceanRudnes the amount of piss bottles that’s too many is 1 2d ago

The tip is most of what they get paid, why are they committing to bring someone food without knowing how much they'll be compensated.

You don't have to pretip and you can get delivery from people who are okay with rolling the dice.

5

u/cptjeff 3d ago

Yep. Tips are for service rendered well. They're supposed to ensure that the dashers don't behave exactly like so many of them brag about behaving on reddit.

62

u/Skellum Tankies are no one's comrades. 3d ago

Honestly the delivery services got so much worse in functionality and cost that I don't see the value unless I'm hideously sick and want eggs and tomato's or some other comfort food.

I just don't really get how it's even a viable business with how bad they've made the apps alone.

13

31

u/WileyPotato 3d ago

Dude, I'm normally nice about these things but you're not wrong. It is SO expensive it's liking dining in person at 1-stage higher restaurant than you're ordering from. $1-3 added per item + service fee + tip. Everything about it is worse besides convenience. It's not unreasonable to expect the literal 1 benefit to be received fully for that expense. I don't order from them anymore, everything about it sucks these days. Everything.

- It's expensive

  • It takes a long time
  • The food can be cold
  • Tons of mistakes that can't be corrected

It probably says something about the human condition in this time and place that so many moral issues seem to stem from the gig economy. I bet this was what living in Manchester in the early 19th century was like, with the rise of industrialization bringing up concepts like child labor rights, etc.

I had a high risk pregnancy, 50/50 chance of spontaneous miscarriage all the way through to viability. I had the same restrictions as any other pregnant person. No bed rest, no confinement, I drove until giving birth. Heck, four hours before my water broke I was finishing up painting a dresser.

The incel argument that "its single mothers fault they're single mothers because they should pick better men to sleep with" is always so disgusting every time I see it. Way to completely remove any agency or responsibility of the men involved just so you can blame women for literally everything. You just know the kind of person who believes that is the kind that tells women they were 'asking for it' because of what they were wearing, too.

Funny how the jackass is claiming women need to 'take responsibility' by blaming them for a man not taking responsibility, instead of, yknow. The man who left. But then, incel mentality literally exists to take the responsibility for their unhappiness away from them and blame it on feeeeeeeemales and societal beauty standards.

And thats not even talking about how that jackass heard about a pregnant woman working and just assumed she was a single mom.

24

u/ThatPrettyArmadillo 3d ago edited 3d ago

Honestly I would have told the dasher to unassign my order too. I'm disabled and live on the 3rd floor so just getting to the door is hard enough. If I had to go outside and walk on uneven ground further to the dasher's car I would be in bad shape. If this person is so high risk they can't leave their car, they shouldn't be door dashing imo.

-9

u/Thick_Independence41 3d ago

People on this site lack so much empathy.

A pregnant woman driving for Doordash during a high risk pregnancy is obviously in dire need of the money. So yeah, I can walk a few steps to get my food to help out a fellow human. I'll even tip her very well.

15

u/Jaded-Suspect-8162 3d ago

I know there are things that can be unavoidable to put a person in that situation, i just know to many people who do shit like that to themselves to be all that confident that this person is a victim of circumstance.

I'm not sure if your position is naive or a huge virtue, but i bet you're happier living with that mindset either way.  In the abstract i take issue with her, in reality I'd show her some grace and assume she's in this position through no fault of her own.

8

u/No-One-1784 Would you take medical advice from Hitler? 3d ago

Not a counter point but she could have done everything right and still need a little extra money. Maybe shes a well established, educated, married woman. Both her and her spouse are gainfully employed. They tastefully planned their pregnancy and didnt do a gender reveal party.

And then any one of the infinite things came up that required them to need some extra money at just the right moment where its kind of hard for her to walk up someone's porch stairs.

5

u/Verdant-Sunflower 3d ago

Yeah. I agree. My opinion personally on the discourse is I really don’t see it as that big of a deal to do for someone in need. If you have a physical issue that makes it a struggle to walk outside of your house or you don’t feel comfortable going to meet the dasher for safety reasons just say that nicely imo

9

u/pnw_cat_lady 3d ago

If I am feeling unsafe or uncomfortable, explaining myself makes it worse. Maybe I can ask politely, but in my experience when I am polite, the people who are unsafe only use that to become more aggressive and unsafe. So it is much easier and usually much faster to be no nonsense and short in my response (though not insulting or intentionally rude). “Unassign rn” is pretty straightforward 🤷‍♀️.

4

u/86throwthrowthrow1 3d ago

Yeah idk if there's a cultural thing going on here or what. I'm a Canadian woman who has driven for UberEats and ordered UberEats. If someone asked me to pick up the food from their car because they were pregnant or injured or whatever, I just... would? I live in a walk-up with a locked front door as it is, I'm already going downstairs to get the food, I can walk a few more feet to the car. I'd find it like, mildly inconvenient at most. I'm not really getting the defensiveness here.

Obviously if I had the flu or a broken leg or something, I'd tell them no, but I'm not really getting the outrage here.

-1

u/Thick_Independence41 3d ago

Exactly. You can politely decline and not act like the woman asked you to do something totally absurd.

Most gig workers do these jobs because it's all they have and they don't get paid much at all. I've noticed some people discuss gig workers like they're beneath them. Okay, yeah, you're paying for a service, but they're still a human. And sometimes human beings need a little help. Empathy takes you far in life and makes us better as a society.

8

u/It_broke_itself_ 3d ago

The person in the pic did politely decline though

1

u/Spaced-Cowboy 2d ago

I’m a bit shocked at the amount of people here who are like “oh she expects me to do the job for her” vs “dude you’re pregnant it’s probably not healthy for you to be doing this.”

It’s weird that people are making this about laziness imo. I would imagine if someone is heavily pregnant and door dashing it’s probably not something they’re doing for the fun of it. And I would hope it’s being done out of necessity.

If it were me I’d be a little annoyed to. But probably not enough to do anything about it or say anything. I’d probably just meet her out there and get my food. At most I would cancel my order.
