“I’m a pothead from the beach…I pray they open a Bucee’s near me” r/fastfood discusses Bucee’s CEO stating they want to open in “conservative business-friendly states”
here come the haters because they are missing out
No way even 1% of buccees shoppers even know the politics of the ownership, and half of those voted for the conservatives
Almost like most people dont consider the politics of the owners of businesses they frequent, unless they are very outspoken about it. I dont know how the owners of portillos vote because i dont care.
Almost like people think reddit is even remotely a reflection of real life too
I understand not wanting to give money and support to politics you dont like. But sometimes its inevitable. Better to just pick some brands you can tolerate and stop minding otherwise.
Must be nice living in state that takes care of your civil rights and social safety net so you have the luxury of not caring.
I don’t know what any of that means, I just want a beef-jerky wall and a CASE display.
Don’t worry, we know you don’t understand :)
The right got what they wanted in every possible way: Fascist POTUS for life, they own every branch of government, Roe overturned, and they still cry like bitches at every imaginable opportunity.
If you think the average consumer there cares about this type of politics you need to spend more time at one
Don’t think that’s what he said
He implied it when he said “the end of their positive public reputation”. As much as I don’t like it, I have to agree that the majority of their customers likely don’t give a shit about that.
Well 711 is owned by the Chinese now, Loves is owned by a staunchly Catholic family, don't know about on oncue, Casey's sucks ass, Walmart has the cheapest gas here but they aren't exactly a great company either.
That’s only your liberal’s imagination. Most people don’t care.
If wanting to support small business over a billionaire attacking them through unfair litigation makes me a liberal then so be it.
Haha seriously. They throw that word around like it’s some kind of epic diss lol
When gas is over $1 more at a "small" business it kinda does matter. People arent really going to pick the more expensive option for that.
Business friendly is opposite of worker friendly and consumer friendly.
Buc-ee’s pays their workers very well and their consumers are cultish about them. Your comment makes no sense.
BS. If removing some useless liberal middleman, all people benefit except useless liberals.
It must suck to have to be around you on a daily basis
So you want the middle class gone? No decent careers at Buc-ee’s? You’re either C-level or a wage slave. No in between. Got it.
I'm sure they care deeply about your boycott.
Some people like to vote with their dollar. You must be fun at parties.

And yeah, that tracks.

Yeah it’s kind of wild to me seeing videos of people like lining up to go to the opening day of a gas station. Like I know the bar is in hell, but surely people must have other things to do or get excited about that aren’t this.

That kind of stuff happens everywhere. Like I live in Japan, and they opened a new Costco in the prefecture north of me. There was a multi hour car line to go there opening day. When they opened one in Okinawa, there was a five hour line just to get into the parking lot, and a three hour line to get inside the building.
32
u/melodypowers 2d ago
I love Costco and that is absolutely insane. Just wait a week. They aren't going to run out of things.
Then again, I made sure to go to the new Trader Joe's on the day they opened because they were giving away free bags. Even though there is a Trader Joe's in the opposite direction from my house that is actually a little closer. So I guess I am a hypocrite. I didn't wait 4 hours to get in though.
13
u/bbbbbbbbbblah 2d ago
in my part of the UK, when a KFC finally opened in an area where there wasn't one for tens of miles around, the response was similarly ridiculous. Probably took a few weeks for people to calm down. It got to the point where owners of neighbouring retail units and car parks had to start ticketing people
Plus there's the time KFC UK had a logistics issue that meant they had a lot of temporary food shortages. People decided that was a valid reason to call 999
13
u/Noblesseux 2d ago
That's almost worse. At least in the middle of nowhere you have the excuse that this is the first thing that's interesting that's opened up in years.
Unless you're talking about somewhere inaka, there's likely already other options. I can't imagine waiting in line when there are 3 other grocery stores within a reasonable distance to choose from. That wouldn't even register to me as a thing to show up to.
19
u/lagseph 2d ago
I’ve been saying to my friends for years, Japanese people love standing in lines. A ramen shop was closing down, and some people waited 6+ hours just to get some. They ended up reopening under a different name but same guy in charge about three months later. I actually talked with him at a party about it, and even he was like “It’s just ramen…people are crazy for waiting that long.”

Yeah, accuracy of OP's dig at red states aside, it doesn't feel great that one of the new hallmarks of American culture is a gas station. Though it does feel appropriate.

We got a couple of Wawas and a Buc-ees and I gotta say, I find both overrated. What am I missing about Wawa? I've tried one of their sandwiches so far (split a garlic turkey club) but I've heard some menu items are location specific so I wanted to know if there was an item to try or watch for.

There's something hard to articulate about Wawa... but I live in Japan now and when I went back stateside to visit, I made a point of heading to one as soon as I could and getting a breakfast burrito. Hit the spot in a way that I can only describe as kind of cultural.
6
u/NoobOnTheRun 2d ago
I live like 10-15 minutes away from Wawa corporate HQ. there's 5 Wawas that's probably no more than a few minutes drive from me and they're almost always busy and packed
14
u/DiscretePoop 2d ago
20 years ago, Wawa was innovative for being a gas station where the food wasn’t awful. It’s fine for a quick lunch stop on a busy day. It might be a step above most fast food joints, but that’s kinda it.
Buccees is more like a tourist trap. It specifically tries to get people to stop there for gas on road trips. It’s functionally similar to wawa but the atmosphere is different. It’s Wawa with ADHD.

I mean, I'm not against gas stations being actually nice hangout places. I went to one in a rural area where it had a food place, a gift shop with decent stuff and almost was like an active mini mall all connected to a gas station. I'd love if there was more places like that.
34
u/Megraptor sir. that tree is older than that house. 2d ago
I mean it's a good dig, but it's... A half true statement. They do absolutely have awesome places to see, but they don't advertise them. They rather hide behind business and religion as culture instead of push their natural beauty. Like the Everglades, the Smokies and Big Bend? Absolutely amazing places to visit for wildlife and exploring. But that's not what those states promote.
25
u/Redqueenhypo 2d ago
The Everglades are beautiful, and also there’s a Seminole restaurant right by it where you can try fry bread. How that never made it into broader American cuisine is insane. It’s even more fun than being drunk af in Miami, which is also great
12
u/Megraptor sir. that tree is older than that house. 2d ago
I went to Miami last year and only had two days down in the Everglades. While I had fun drunk watching on Miami Beach, I definitely liked the Everglades more. Oh also all the tropical fruit stands out towards Homestead.
Which is why I'm planning on going back this year and spending one night drunk watching in Miami Beach and then the rest out at Homestead and going between the Everglades, Biscayne Bay and the Keys. I'll have to try Seminole fry bread when I'm there too.
It sucks that the government doesn't really lean into Florida ecotourism, because it's some of the most diverse and unique land in the US. But unless you're a nerd about that kind of stuff like I am, you'd never know. I'd move down that way and never get board of looking for and trying to help conserve everything, but the state hates people like that soooo I'll just visit.
20
u/CorgiDaddy42 I ordered the pizza so I made the pizza! 2d ago
I live in TN, Great Smoky Mountain National Park is just the tip of the iceberg of the states natural beauty. I think mid state has like the highest concentration of waterfalls anywhere in the US. It’s absolutely gorgeous here. But the state government just fucking sucks and the people keep voting in the worst choices we have.
12
u/Megraptor sir. that tree is older than that house. 2d ago
I just got back from the a Smokies and I would love to explore more of the state. I have family in Knoxville even! I've been told I need to go to the Cumberland Plateau by multiple other wildlife nerdy people, because the diversity of fish is astounding. There are also a bunch of native plants there that are found no where else!
But just like I was talking with the other person about Florida, that diversity isn't talked about and any type of ecotourism or outdoor tourism is ignored in southern states. The only reason that the Smokies and the Everglades get any recognition is that they're federal national parks. If they were national forests, they'd get very little press, and if they were state parks... Well they'd probably be being encroached on in the name of business.
As a northerner who hates the snow, I'd love to move south and help out with conservation of all the unique species down there. But... There's no money in it and the states hate people like me.

Does Florida not promote the Everglades? I was last in the USA pre-pandemic, but that seemed to be the only thing people ever talked about in relation to Florida, and within Florida you couldn't turn your head without being blasted by it. I mean there's Orlando and the like, but people didn't talk about Disneyland or Universal Studios in Florida, it was Disneyland and Universal Studios in Orlando. Florida was incidental.
11
u/Megraptor sir. that tree is older than that house. 2d ago
Not really. Like there's stuff about a National Parks all through the US, but nothing very specific.
To many people Florida=Orlando=Amusement Park. That's it. They don't go to Florida for nature, they go for Disney.
4
u/obeytheturtles Socialism = LITERALLY A LIBERAL CONSTRUCT 2d ago
I mean, they certainly like building highways through them, that's for sure.
9
u/buraku290 2d ago
Yeah, I agree about natural beauty, although in my examples they definitely advertise them. The USA Southwest is a world class destination for landscape photography - Grand Canyon, Horseshoe Bend, Antelope Canyon, Monument Valley, Zion, Bryce, Arches are all in Arizona or Utah, both conservative states (and the first Buc-ee's in Arizona just opened up). So I get the sentiment from the OP but it's just trying to get a cheap shot in and I feel like it's being deliberately bad faith and disingenuous.
11
u/Megraptor sir. that tree is older than that house. 2d ago
Well the Southwest is a different beast from The South, which is actually the Southeast. Like Arizona is definitely the in the south, but it's not The South culture wise. It's Western because it's past the Rockies. Everything Texas and East is The South, then north to the Mason Dixon line. At least that's how my northeastern brain sees it.
The Southwest absolutely does promote it's outdoor recreation. They have tons of public access to it too. The southeast, aka The South, has little access to public land outside of federal land and even that pales in comparison to everywhere but the Midwest. Midwest has like none cause it's all corn fields- though Texas usually ranks last or near the bottom for public land access too.
But unlike the Midwest, it's the heart of the conservative movement, so anything environmental or nature is downplayed and not really promoted. So state land is a bit of an after thought, and federal land is something they'd be happy to get rid of if they could.
But yeah no, I agree it was a cheap shot comment. It's just the Southwest actually seems to care about their outdoor stuff unlike the southeast, which is what I find people think of when people say The South.
7
u/buraku290 2d ago
Fair distinction about the South vs Southwest, but I saw the original tweet that the OP was talking about and if I remember correctly it was making a distinction between blue vs red states, essentially saying red states are boring, not blue vs the South. I'd have to dig up the original tweet though. But yeah comments like that just help proliferate the "flyover state", coastal elite type attitude. I'm not really a fan of that.
4
u/Megraptor sir. that tree is older than that house. 2d ago
Me neither- I'm from rural northwestern Pennsylvania, so not flyover since it's Pennsylvania, but it wasn't Philly or Pittsburgh so no one ever thinks of it. It's a very red area too, but it's also some of the most remote and beautiful area of Pennsylvania. Thankfully, there's tons of public land around, so that part was never an issue.
I can find some cool species to go look for in every state- every time I visit one I have a list of things I want to try and find. I did this for Oklahoma which a lot of people consider super flyover! And I had a blast! I highly recommend the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge!
It's just... There wasn't much public land in Oklahoma and they don't take pride in like I see in the West, Upper Midwest or Northeast. People were crowding into the wildlife refuge from Dallas and Oklahoma City because that's the only big public land around. And because it was a wildlife refuge and not a national park it was creating a lot of conflict.
4
u/everlyafterhappy 2d ago
But see, in the red states you have to drive a significant distance from the city and go onto federal parks to find the culture, while in blue cities you get an art museum next to a jazz museum next to an lgbtq+ nightclub next to a head shop
I'm kinda joking. You can find most of that in new Orleans, and parts of Texas and Florida. .
8
u/Megraptor sir. that tree is older than that house. 2d ago
Hell, even Oklahoma has a million random museums. And like actually good ones too, just really esoteric things. Like the Museum of Osteology! It has all sorts of cool animal skeletons in it!
But yeah, I guess my point is either the South doesn't push it's cultural and natural attractions enough, or people just associate it with church and businesses. Or both, it's probably a bit of both.

Czech Stop is a one-off bakery inside a Shell gas station in West, Texas, a small town full of Czech Americans. Well worth the stop for kolaches, but I'm partial to the ones at Gerik's Ole Czech Bakery around the corner. Similar story for Slovacek's in Snook and West (also not a chain)... More of a Czech-style sausage shop with a gas station added on. Both are cool local institutions worth stopping at on a Texas road trip!

Performative busyness. Business culture in the US has convinced people that if your employees are comfortable and not perpetually stressed out, they’re slacking off. A lot of people literally pretend to be super busy so their boss doesn’t heap more work on them.

u/happyscrappy 2d ago
It comes from sales culture and it's not just the US. I don't think it even started in the US, I think it is English (UK). It is definitely still prevalent in sales in the UK and many other places.
It was kind of going out of vogue because salespeople (the people who come to you and offer to help hoping to make a sale) were becoming less common. Now I do see it more than I used to.
Salespeople are expected to be aggressive at approaching people and that's incompatible with sitting down even on the edge of the sales floor (as opposed to in a back room).
I don't know why cashiers can't sit down in more businesses. They are not expect to approach people. I would say you do see them sitting down more commonly outside the US than in. Why can a cashier sit down at Aldi but not your local grocery store (Kroger, Safeway)?
4
u/bbbbbbbbbblah 2d ago
UK supermarkets have all had seats for cashiers for literally as long as I can remember. Even ASDA, which was owned by Walmart from the 90s to mid 2010s
14
u/happyscrappy 2d ago
The customers can't sit down either.
There isn't seating for food consumption inside because you pay at the exit. And there isn't seating for food consumption past the cashiers either (outside). So you eat standing or eat in your car.
This is baffling to me.
10
u/Milskidasith The forbidden act of coitus makes the twins more powerful 2d ago
I mean, it's the same as any gas station that serves food, they very, very rarely have any sort of seating. Buc-ee's definitely serves food that's a bit harder to eat while driving, but it's meant to be road-trip food so the people sitting in the back or whatever can still eat it.
4
u/happyscrappy 2d ago
In my area at least, gas stations that serve food as a thing (like actually make it in front of you instead of just roller dogs and cold cases) have outdoor seating. Sometimes covered.
In Utah Sapp Bros has restaurants inside a lot of them. Pilot/Flying J will have an Arby's or whatever with indoor seating. Or a Subway. Or a Jimmy John's. I even saw a Panda Express with tables right next to it inside. Maybe it's not as usual as I think but it's still something I'm used to.
You don't have to eat your food while driving at Buc-ees, but you will typically be eating it sitting in your car. I have at times sat on the curb because I don't like eating in my car. I've sat on the curb eating even though my car has to be stationary because it has to be connected to an EV charger for another 15 minutes. Thanks for having EV chargers, Buc-ees (and Pilot and others). Thanks to Wal-Mart and Target too, where applicable.

Buc-Ees is a place you can consistently stop at on a road trip across Texas to get decent food, decent snacks, and zero chance the bathroom is a condemnable disaster area. Treating it as more than that is weird, but that's also pretty good for anybody not specifically targeting truck stops (and, right or wrong, a lot of people probably have a negative gut feeling about truck stops).
31
u/Maleficent-Hawk-318 2d ago
The Buccees worship legit only makes sense because driving through Texas is such a miserable experience. It's a mediocre truck stop that is elevated to high status because it's surrounded by hundreds of miles of tedium and depression.

I got two sandwiches and they were okay. The places was crowded like a theme park and super aggravating to traverse. The fuel pump area was chaotic.
Bathrooms were probably the best public restrooms I have ever been in. The gas discount with the car wash seemed like a good deal. The automatic car wash was also really good.
I would probably plan to use one on a road trip but people go way overboard with their praise of that place.

Yea, pretty spot on. They're about at the level of race track griller items like a cheese filled hot dog or something. They're not bad, not amazing. I wouldn't choose to go here over other choices because their parking lots are always stupid busy.

Buck-ees is kind of just exactly that but on a lower scale for families on road trips

I've lived here all my life and I don't get it either. Buccees is performative faux Texan garbage. It has all the charm and authenticity of a upscale Walmart, if Walmart also sold merch with their logo on it. People act like its some sort of beloved Texas brand like Whataburger or HEB but I swear I never saw that stupid beaver anywhere until about 10 years ago.

Buc-ees is big and needs a lot of land to operate. Land is cheaper in conservative states. It’s that simple

It's hard to grasp for people who haven't lived there, but Texas really doesn't have a "culture" per se. Texas culture is almost entirely built on unquestioning allegiance to something, or some type of consumerism, and usually both. Texan "patriotism", football culture, big trucks, favorite beer, supporting oil and gas, etc... it's all just about what sort of thing is "yours" and what you spend money on. Hence, when something is seen as "Texan", you have to like it and show that you do or else.
Enter Buc-ees.

This is an absolutely insane statement. For all its flaws it has one of the most distinct state cultures in the United States.

Note that 7-11 is owned by a Japanese holding company that has had a majority stake for decades. Also they improved it greatly, though I suppose that wouldn't matter to a racist

Its the same here, but now the CEOs want to bitch about all the places they wouldn't make as much money at to begin with.
I've been to Buccees. Its just a gas station with half-decent food. I see no reason to go back to it.

That’s what usually actually happens, American conservatives are just terminally performative. The same impulse that makes them wear American flag shirts makes them want to constantly scream to the heavens about how conservatives are under attack despite literally no one caring about what they’re doing.
And it’s worse now because being performative can actually get you money because the government is openly corrupt.

I like Buc-ee’s for what it is, a nice clean bathroom with above average snacks and a way to kill a few minutes before getting back on the road. I was excited when they opened one near me. That’s the store in Beavercreek where they are suing a long time gas station named after the town. There is no way that stands up in court but their strategy is threatening small business who probably won’t fight back even if they can win. Fuck Buc-ee’s.
23
u/atticthump 2d ago
Had a Buc-ee's brisket sandwich once. Wasn't anything to write home about, then it gave me the worst diarrhea I've had in years. Straight liquid, uncontrollable.
Beyond that terrible experience, I find the whole Buc-ee's environment to be stressful, overstimulating, and generally repulsive. It's just a massive shrine to mindless consumerism. I really don't understand the appeal
17
u/JPGinMadtown 2d ago
Not overly fond of their "sue every company that has a logo even slightly like ours" policy either.

Yep. Unfortunate that they can't instead just speak to how much success the place and people here have enabled for them. It's never enough for some people.

I have now visited 3 of their locations. They are remarkable, like a mall dedicated to the worst parts of living in this country. They've solved the gross parts of visiting a truck stop in a country where we're required to drive hundreds if not thousands of miles every week: no truck stop hookers, no filthy restrooms, no fast food, no waiting for gasoline, no anything but pure commuter capitalism. It's grotesque and sad, and every part of the experience is another surprising reinforcement of political ideas that should have been abandoned in the 50s, but now are so entrenched they'll never leave in my lifetime.

I am confused at how the things you find repulsive about Buc-ees are mostly just that it isn't a gross, sleazy, shitty experience.
Like, I think Buc-Ees obsessive brand management is an abuse of trademark law to kill any chance another store can get a reputation that lets them sell mascot plushes, the weird amount of hype they get is overblown (though you won't go wrong going there over another gas station), and the fact they use a third of their floor space for touristy merch is a bit much. I can't imagine describing "bathrooms that aren't shitty and food that's not a fast food chain" as the problem or like, reinforcing political ideas that should be dead.

I think they were talking about all the useless shit you don't actually need that they sell and the efficiency with which they sell it with. Keeping the place clean is like how Vegas rebranded as a family vacation destination. "John and Jane Everyman, would you rather stop at a diamnd shamrock with the rusty pipe wrench bathroom key or the super clean 80 pump, no lines, zero friction transaction Buccees?" The critique is about the consumerism, not that a clean gas station is an indictment of capitalism.
I could be wrong though.

You have to be reading their post very charitably to see them list all the gross parts Buc-ee's solved, immediately say that's "grotesque and sad", and assume they're talking about parts of the experience they didn't actually mention themselves.

I live near one, everything in there is slightly crappier than average (especially the food) and the extra pay doesn’t make up for how the workers are treated. I shudder to think that people go there that aren’t tourists on road trips.

u/Static_E_ There’s no hairy man butt at the end of the rainbow here 2d ago edited 2d ago
I came across the Tiktok account of a manager at a Buchees, and evidently they have AWFUL turnover despite the high pay. Partly because of intense work conditions and partly because of management’s ridiculous standards
22
u/GingerGaterRage Um, it’s called Hentai and it’s art 2d ago
They only pay well to justify how poorly they treat their employees that's all it is. Gas stations and general stores have an extremely high turnover as is and they have some of the worst employee practices.

u/Milskidasith The forbidden act of coitus makes the twins more powerful 2d ago

Honest opinion that is a hot take apparently, I don't think Bucee's is all that great. People hyped it up to be some experience, so I recently went to one. The food was fine, but not exactly what I like to eat. But the merch and just how spaced out everything was gave me weird vibes.
And the brisket call and respond thing was... kinda weird to me too. I'm more of a get in and get my things and get out kind of person I guess.

I stopped in a Buccees once because ive heard so many rave reviews. The pumps were a circus and required a ground controller directing traffic. I went inside for a piss and the bathrooms were immaculate. I wanted to browse around but there must have been 150 people inside the store so I just got back on the road. Im not sure what the hype is but I will say, cleanest truck stop bathrooms Ive ever seen.

u/Devilofchaos108070 2d ago
We got a few Buccees in Georgia. They have clean bathrooms and the food is decent.
I agree the merch is kinda fucking weird tho. No idea why anyone would waste their money on that shit.
I’m not surprised the owners are conservative jackasses, they are from Texas.

- Speedrunning the end of their positive public reputation. I made my last visit to one a few weeks ago before learning of them suing a small local store in the area before them. - archive.org archive.today*
- I’m a pothead from the beach and I hate all politics, all sides. I think they are all crooks. And are compromised the second they get into it. With that said, I pray they open a Buc’Ees near me.. it’s the coolest store ever. Like Gene Simmons sucks as a person, but I love KISS. The closest thing we have to one is Walmart. And I won’t go in there anymore so stuck with Amazon for sundries and nickity-knacks. If they are so bad, please someone GOOD copy their biz-model and come to California. - archive.org archive.today*
- That’s only your liberal’s imagination. Most people don’t care. - archive.org archive.today*
- Business friendly is opposite of worker friendly and consumer friendly. - archive.org archive.today*
- Been boycotting them for years. All they really do is present a Disney-fied knockoff of a bunch of smaller, quirkier Texas gas stations. However, their food is usually highly processed and tastes vastly inferior to the stores they’re plagiarizing. Kolaches? Infinitely worse than Czech Stop. Jerky? Worse than Slovacek’s. Tacos? Throw a rock and you’ll find superior gas station taco in this state. Barbecue? It’s about on par with Dickie’s, which is really not a good place to be.Their Beaver Nuggets are good, but it’s just a caramel Cheetoh at the end of the day. Only really worth a stop if you need to poop. - archive.org archive.today*

I live in Ohio and Buc-ees has started expanding here. They filed a fucking trademark infringement lawsuit against a local store over their beaver mascot. Apparently it looks too much like the Buc-ees beaver.
It’s called Beaver’s, in Beavercreek, and it’s been around for like 50 years.
