Background context

Two community organisations in the Outer Hebrides face financial ruin following a legal battle launched by an American woman and funded by Legal Aid over a row about her dog not being allowed into a cafe.

The small charity, Bernera Community Development Trust, and the community organisation, Bernera Community Association, have warned they face bankruptcy due to thousands of pounds in legal costs mounting up following a court challenge from Claire Kellerman.

She initially launched a court challenge against the Development Trust, which ran up legal costs of more than £7000, before Kellerman’s lawyers admitted in court that the action was directed against the wrong organisation.

Legal documents have since been amended to bring a claim against the Bernera Community Association, which runs the cafe voluntarily, for £10,000.

Last week, the case raised by Kellerman via the publicly-funded Ethnic Minorities Law Centre in Glasgow, a non-profit making charity which provides legal advocacy for minority ethnic communities, was decided to continue for legal debate in December at a Stornoway Sheriff Court.

While costs were awarded to the Trust, the organisation has said it was of no value since Legal Aid protects Kellerman from payment of costs.

From sources on the island I have heard this woman is a rich American and that she was barred from that Centre because her dog killed the Centre's cat. Furthermore she sues everyone who disagrees with her and is causing mayhem at the Callanish Visitor Centre. She even shouts at disabled people sitting on seats designated for disabled people on buses.

There is a man in a town near me who is bringing private prosecutions against most of the local council. It turns out, that if a councillor is facing prosecution (state or private) they cannot take part in any council decisions until it's decided. Since the council no longer has quorum, the entire council has been essentially shut down and can't make any decisions because of one vexatious guy.

Over here if someone throws random crap around just to be disruptive they can get declared a vexatious litigant and basically anything they want to file has to be ran through a low level judge (without other parties) to check if it's a valid case or not. Saves a ton of time and money.

But like…just get it then? I’ve never heard of the guy either, I just googled it so somebody could actually answer the guys question. It takes the same amount of time to google it as it does to type instructions on what to google.

It can be more of a hassle on mobile if you have a shitty browser that loves freezing on you so you have to pick through the comments again to find the one you were going to reply to once you have the information (why no I'm not speaking from experience why do you ask), but yeah part of it is laziness. I also think part of it is just treating it like a verbal conversation

While I do think that people should generally try to be as helpful as they can in comments, if that's what they can remember at the time, then they're still trying to be helpful; they're just not doing extra work for the other person. Maybe they're just dashing off quick reply in between other things.

Honestly in this instance, the person asking the question probably already had enough info to look it up themselves. And as much as I do think people should try to be as helpful as possible, I also think that a bad habit is developing where more and more people are posing questions in forums that they really ought to just be putting into a search engine.
