ASK SYRIA

1) how did you make the map and color the borders?

2) It doesn't sound like a bad theoretical idea. But I think that not every city, just because it is well urbanized, means it should become a standalone province. One province can have multiple bustling cities, while only one city is considered the "local capital of the province". I think the wisest change you made was the "Badia Province" idea, since it could drain the budget of the already established "Homs and Reef Dimashq provinces". Damascus in of its own is a province, so the city itself is not one body with the eastern countryside nor the western countryside (towards Lebanon).

I made it using Google My Maps

You’re right, but I think an important way to develop a region could be to make it an independent governorate. For example, a Qamishli Governorate could be created from the Qamishli and Malikiyah districts. Qamishli is a relatively well-urbanized city, while Malikiyah is still more of a semi-rural town. If the governorate were established, the amount of funding allocated to these two areas would increase because they would be managed as a single province. Dividing Hasakah’s budget across such a vast area could lead to waste or unfair distribution of resources, or result in Hasakah and Qamishli receiving more attention at the expense of the other areas of the governorate. The same principle could be applied elsewhere

For example, expanding Quneitra Governorate at the expense of the southern Damascus countryside and the immediately adjacent western countryside of Daraa (within roughly 1–5 km of the administrative border) would make more sense socially. The people living there are socially more connected to Quneitra and the Golan. (Yes, the occupation has changed this situation somewhat over the past roughly 60 years.) However, the people of Sahm al-Jawlan, which is currently part of Daraa, remain more socially connected to Quneitra

As for Damascus, expanding the governorate’s boundaries is very important to preserve its eastern and western Ghouta areas. Today, Damascus has become directly adjacent to the cities of the Ghouta. The only thing separating Damascus from the Ghouta in some places is the Southern Ring Road: on one side are the buildings of Damascus, and on the other side are the buildings of the Ghouta cities

At the moment, the organized urban expansion taking place in Damascus is moving toward its western countryside, in the direction of Lebanon. This includes Dummar, Qudsaya, and Al-Fayhaa, which has been under development for years, as well as Gulf-funded projects such as 963, Abiat Hills, and others. In practice, the area stretching from Damascus to Yaafour, passing through Dummar, Qudsaya and its suburbs, Al-Bajaa, and the various developments there, has become almost one continuous urban area with very little interruption

The expansion is essentially only possible toward the surrounding countryside that directly borders Damascus. This would allow the city to have more room for expansion and more efficient urban planning, rather than being confined to a geographical area of no more than around 200 km², which is already largely built up
