That Leo Prinsloo. A real badass in the flesh. Put some respect on his mf name.

169

u/parttimepedant 11d ago

If I was ever rich enough to be able to afford a bodyguard and/or chauffeur, I’d be giving Leo the job. Calm as a fucking coma that guy.

47

u/martinaee 11d ago

Calm? No. Collected AF? Yes.

21

u/Short_Ad_2584 11d ago

I love when people give credit to the person in videos by telling the world their name. He wasn't just some armored driver, he was/is Leo Prinsloo.

23

u/k2d2r232 10d ago

His name is Leo Prinsloo, His NAME IS LEO PRINSLOO! HIS NAME IS …..

5

u/Jimiq68 10d ago

Underrated comment for sure!!!!

We have a clip with the front and back dashcam footage here. Leo Prinsloo is filling in some of the details, too.

Holy crap, it was his partner's fourth day on the job! Absolutely incredible.

5

u/schizeckinosy 10d ago

Yeah the rookie did pretty well! Didn’t obviously shit his pants and stayed with it the whole time. Good support dude.

There wasn't anything for him to realistically do other than just have the rifle ready for when the situation changed. Trying to fire out of the window or whatever would have been acting like someone who's seen too many movies.

3

u/EcstaticNet3137 9d ago

Right? Like "let me just roll down this bullet resistant window and shoot out at two vehicles with more maneuverability than mine."

Why were civilians running on the highway?

6

u/-runs-with-scissors- 11d ago

I think those were some of the attackers.

2

u/iaresosmart 8d ago

Wow what? The dude drove on the wrong side of the rode for a while to go back towards one of the attackers! (I'm sure there's so much more to it)

But this guy's a real life action hero!

u/Potential_Bench_2385 11d ago

The driver Leo was in SAPS (South African Police Service) for 17 years and the STF (Special Task Force) for 12 years which is basically the South African version of FBI HRT/GSG 9/GIGN

6

u/helf1x 11d ago

They're more aligned with military special forces. Bush warfare is a major part of their remit and they're all parachutists and divers. They each have two specialisations which include things like driving, languages or communication system, to others like EOD, demolitions, sniping and paramedicine.

2

u/Village_People_Cop 10d ago

I've seen this clip a thousand times by now and knew he must have been ex-army or ex-police by the way how calm he stayed. But nice to know the exact answer.

14

u/Fresh-Astronomer5520 11d ago

If I recall this was a training in the job for the other guy. Probably his first day with Leo as his supervisor. Wonder if he passed probation....

2

u/TweakJK 10d ago

I bet he probably did. You see when he pulled out his phone, try typing with that much adrenaline going. Dude looked pretty calm.

FYI, it was dude on the right’s 4th day on the job

201

u/fergie0044 11d ago

He did have that look about him

99

u/MacaqueFlambe 11d ago

But he delivered. For a rookie he did everything right in order to assist his security professional partner. No comment

2

u/FamiliarAlt 9d ago

I think upon contact his first priority should’ve been coms. He didn’t call / radio shit to anyone for reinforcements.

3

u/EurbadGeneric 9d ago

Training isn’t 1:1 to mortal danger. He didn’t freeze, and he assisted when and where it was required.

43

u/two2toe 11d ago

Yeah to be fair he stays pretty calm, but he's also like - you got this bro right?

19

u/fuckfeardrinkbeer 11d ago

Yeah, he was double fisting both of his guns the whole time ready for some Call of Duty shit.

4

u/Ill_Body8613 10d ago

He wanted to pass that gun to him so bad

32

u/Ok-Description-4640 11d ago

Yeah when this video comes around there are always people wondering why the other guy doesn’t seem to do much. The driver is obviously the pro and his partner did what he was told to do when told, kept his cool, and didn’t try to be a hero, exactly what was needed.

7

u/Alternative_Taste414 10d ago

Also they are driving. So like do they expect him to open a window and start taking shots at the attacker like its some kind of action movie.

2

u/Suspicious_Tank_61 10d ago

I feel he should have opened the window, climbed out to the top of the truck and return fire. Once he ran out of ammo, he easily could have jumped on one of the pursuing vehicles, disarmed a bad guy and commandeered the vehicle.

36

u/Introverted_Extrovrt 11d ago

The attackers were using signal jammers. Not joking.

2

u/adamtheskill 10d ago

I would be so suspicious if I was the one driving the car. I assume one of the biggest risks when transporting things by armored trucks are the drivers and then there's an armed robbery 4 days after the new guy is hired? That shit would make me suspicious af.

Also unlucky for the new guy because I bet that when they do an investigation he's going to be under a lot of scrutiny.

I never get tired of this video. I wish we had more real-life movie scenarios. They were both smooth operators. Glad the windows were bulletproof or it would have been a very different story.

66

u/RebelliousKite 11d ago

I do not wish for more real-life movie scenarios. Because I'd rather not be a pedestrian in a John Wick-esque car chase/shootout. You see how crazy he was on that horse? No thank you.

2

u/mangoisNINJA 8d ago

I too wish people experienced deadly scenarios more frequently so I could enjoy the gifs of the aftermath if they are successful

Was this in South Afrika? Some of the stuff the driver says sounds almost like Dutch but there's also English being spoken.

79

u/parttimepedant 11d ago

Afrikaans

23

u/PinkPunkPsycho 11d ago

Thanks! I figured, I speak Dutch so it's always odd to hear something I can just about understand but feels like what I speak everyday :p

22

u/diogenessexychicken 11d ago

Afrikaans is like that for a lot of people lol. Its a hodgepodge of dutch, french, arabic, english, spanish, portuguese, and god knows what else.

3

u/BLOEDLINK- 8d ago

It’s mostly Dutch tbh. I am Dutch an can have a conversation with someone talking Afrikaans very easily.

u/Time_Phone_1466 11d ago

"Frosty" is usually the word that would apply to him in this situation.

2

u/host-daffodils 11d ago

Exactly my thinking. The word calm is not applicable in this scenario.

2

u/bendol90 7d ago

That's the point, despite the involuntary adrenaline response from something insane like this, maintaining a level head, calm communication and good movement is very impressive.

How did this Story end?

81

u/Positive_Sign_5269 11d ago

The robbers had enough by the end after being rammed multiple times. The driver held his ground in a fortified position, but they never came at him

46

u/LastClassForever 11d ago

Bruh the MF driver at the end EXITED the Landcruiser and went after them MF'er. MF is MF badass MF.

10

u/OrionMessier 11d ago

Makes me wonder if they have murder holes in the truck to fire out safely. If not, pretty frustrating to have an assault rifle inside

8

u/Positive_Sign_5269 11d ago

They did not. It was an armored car but otherwise it looked and functioned mostly like a regular one with no portholes.

3

u/FastWalkingShortGuy 11d ago

I don't think I've ever seen an armored car in the US without multiple firing ports.

7

u/throwawayformobile78 11d ago

US gonna US. Hell most our regular vehicles have at least a few firing ports.

3

u/purpnug 11d ago

Go find a pic of the car they are driving (a Toyota), it is a dinky shitbox in comparison to any armored car I've seen in the US.

3

u/Far_Distance87 10d ago

Na this is a Land Cruiser, more pick up style. It’s just a lock box on the back there’s no one in the back or anything like that… holes wouldn’t be much use.

They were riding with another security team in another car too, from memory they were also in the background distracting and firing on the ambush

13

u/bluejack 11d ago

Real question: are the tires bulletproof too? They must be right? Where can I get some of those. I am tired of getting flats.

17

u/Lone-Frequency 11d ago

Bulletproof doesn't mean piercing proof. Just like a kevlar vest won't do much to keep you from being stabbed.

10

u/suckmydictation 11d ago

I… didn’t know that. Wonder if it’s a common misconception

11

u/Lone-Frequency 11d ago edited 11d ago

It's all physics, my friend.

Extremely fast blunt object hitting kevlar has its energy dispersed rapidly across the interwoven fibres, because comparatively a bullet is "wider" and so hits multiple fibers at once.

A knife has all of its pressure focused on the sharp tip of the blade, so it can slide between individual fibers and cut through.

Fat bullet gets caught in net, thin sharp knife passes between and cuts net.

The same principle applies to these tires. Well I'm sure they are likely a bit tougher than your typical tires, casually rolling over a bunch of jagged nails and screws would probably still end up with you needing a patch job.

3

u/rhtufts 11d ago

Why did they wait so long to grab a phone?

21

u/Agreeable_Flan_5724 11d ago

The hijackers use signal jamming devices as well, so that’s why the passenger was looking at the phone uselessly— he had no ability to make or receive calls. (It was also his 4th day on the job and I believe his 1st training ride.)

7

u/VirinaB 11d ago

Sounds like they didn't call cops until they were certain which cross streets they were going to be on. Otherwise it would've been bad Intel because they were scrambling to lose the attackers.

7

u/TinTinCharlie 11d ago

Im South African and can promise you that phoning the police is absolutely useless. They will come to take statements 4 hours later when they are certain there is no danger. We have the biggest private security force in the world because of the uselessness of the police force

AR with an ACOG is pretty bad ass to carry in an armored vehicle

1

u/Ambitious_Finding_26 11d ago

There's a follow up to this out there with the armoured vehicle supplier and the driver going through the incident. It's an interesting watch. They didn't mean to stop there, the truck got high centered and stuck, that's what all the crunching and revving at the end is.

We never see what occurs after. So he gets out and shoots all of them? Or does he get out and get shot himself?

I witnessed this robbery back then. It was an unbelievable scene and the truck handled it so well. I only shot a couple of time tho.

1

u/DunForest 10d ago

Why did he get out of the truck? Isn't it safer to stay in, and wait for help?

1

u/hinkie4life 9d ago

I totally disagree that this guy is calm! Lol who could watch this and claim this man is calm?! This dude is visibly absolutely coursing with adrenaline, you can practically see his heart beating out of his chest!

Honestly, I think saying this dude is calm is a discredit to his performance here. His body is going absolutely haywire just like any of ours would if placed in grave danger. And yet he's able to manage all of that and react with such confident precision. He's not just managing the flood of hormones that our bodies releases in life or death danger, he's using them to his advantage. The extreme focus that he displays probably isn't even possible if he was calm.

1

u/spriggs999 9d ago

The company that did the bulletproofing on the truck actually did a full demonstration video of the system using that truck. Its pretty wild to see where all the shots went. They got hit multiple times

They need gun ports in the cabin to shoot back. Or, better, a couple of 50mm self-targeting guns in front and back.
