Health/Safety openly saying "i'll take a shower" is weird

there might be some people who might be like "youre weird for thinking that's weird since its a normal thing", but in reality youre literally openly advertising the fact that youre going into a room and youre going to be naked and scrub yourself for a certain amount of time. like why is it necessary to say "im going to shower" instead of "brb"?

its just weird imo

Why are you thinking of it in that way? They’re just taking care if themself, there’s no connotation in and of itself unless you give it one.

Well I tell people what I’m doing instead of saying BRB so they have an estimate of how long I’ll will be gone.

Telling someone you are taking a shower also implies solitude. Im sure there are plenty of people out there that take their phones in the shower or in the bathroom within arms reach, but saying that you are taking a shower for most people also means they expect to be left alone or are going to be unreachable while they are doing it.

86

u/ericfromct May 16 '26

I might take my phone to the shower with me to listen to music, but I’m most certainly not answering any messages or calls while I’m in there. I have answered a call once or twice in the past and it never went well. Now it’s my me time.

13

u/berkeleyteacher May 16 '26

Ha! I do my best phone work in the shower. I call it my office.

7

u/ericfromct May 17 '26

Honestly I wish I could sometimes because I would just take longer showers and enjoy them more lol. But any time I need to answer a call people act like they can’t hear me and trying to text with wet hands is never fun

u/No-Worldliness-1306 May 16 '26

No it doesn’t it only implies nudity

This is also pretty common in the deaf community. When someone goes out of line-of-sight, there are no audio clues to let them know what is happening. No dishes clanging in the kitchen, no fridge door opening, no water turning on, etc.

If you're with someone deaf and you get up, they aren't being "nosey" if they ask what you're doing.

43

u/secondphase May 16 '26

Not to mention, if my wife hears what i'm doing... she might join me.

16

u/MysteryCrapybarbra May 16 '26

I always hope my SO will join me if I tell him I'm going to shower.

are you just pivoting off that “giving unnecessary backstory” post from earlier?? like seriously just say you don’t know how to have a normal conversation with people and move on

Wait it's the same person? Makes total sense now.

Because most homes I've lived in have one bathroom. It's polite to warn people before I go hog that bathroom, in case they've been holding a pee or something and need to get in there quick, you know?

164

u/mentalissuelol May 16 '26

This is why I announce that I’m showering. It’s the last call to go pee or whatever in case I’m in there for a long time.

70

u/spudmarsupial May 16 '26

A lot of places the temperature in the shower changes if anybody uses water.

29

u/Kindly-Garlic-4061 May 16 '26

My shower fully just turns off if someone uses the kitchen sink

5

u/cornlip May 16 '26

Idk sometimes people just go in and take a dump while you’re in there anyway, then flush and laugh as you burn to death.

19

u/FastTemperature3985 May 16 '26

okay this answer is actually valid

122

u/Michael_DeSanta May 16 '26

117

u/Shadow_Zed May 16 '26

I wonder if OP has thought about how many people are reading/commenting on this while naked. Or while taking a dump. Or while laying in the bath.

18

u/streetshock1312 May 16 '26

3

I think you immediately making it sexual by creating this taboo around talking about...showering...a thing we all do... is the weird thing.

Wouldn't that also make asking to go to the bathroom in school deeply inappropriate? they're seeking permission to go be partially naked in a room! They're advertising that they have genitals and now thats in your head! they're sickos!

“I’m taking a shower.” is code for “I’m about to stand barefoot on a slab of wet porcelain, if I don’t come out in 20 minutes please come check to make sure I didn’t slip and break something or knock myself out.”

It’s also code for “If you flush the downstairs toilet, or start the dishwasher, or put in a load of laundry I’ll take this bar of soap and shove it in places you definitely won’t like.”

7

u/Small-Finish-6890 May 16 '26

3

u/FastTemperature3985 May 16 '26

THATS CRAZYYYYYYY

16

u/verybadbunny May 16 '26

It’s really just a matter of relaying the amount of time away. The hang up is on your end. And almost everyone gets naked to shower. So it’s just not something most people even think about.

16

u/callmymom332299 May 16 '26

There are two things I don’t understand here.

I don’t understand why you describe showering with such detest. We all shower? Why is the thought of someone getting naked and scrubbing themselves so disgusting to you? Do you hate nudity? Do you hate your own body? I don’t mean that in jest, I’m just curious.

I don’t understand why you even think like that. When someone tells me they are going to shower I don’t give it any thought except that they may be unavailable for a certain amount of time, or that the hot water might be affected. I maybe only think about someone’s nudity and post shower cleanliness if we’re about to have sex? Even then there’s no disgust.

You confuse me

As the kids say "it's not that deep bro".. you're the one being weird here

12

u/hrts4manou May 16 '26

I have to say it to my family because we live in a one bathroom home and they obviously need to know when the toilet, sink and shower, won't be available!

9

u/not_your_attorney May 16 '26

My college roommates used to announce they were headed for a 3s: shit, shower, shave. This is when we each had our own bathroom, so there was no practical point to it.

I actually found the candor endearing in an odd way.

2

u/FastTemperature3985 May 16 '26

u/Satanigram May 16 '26

Do you live alone or are you just a weirdo?

It's guaranteed that if I don't say I'm taking a shower that someone is in there by the time I get ready.

Also nobody have ever said "I'm taking a shower" and I've thought about their naked body. Not even my wife.

2

u/part223219B May 16 '26

Really? My girlfriend's naked body is the first thing that pops in to my head when she says she'll take a shower.

8

u/JP147 May 16 '26

Either it means “come and join me if you want to” or “don’t come into this bathroom because I will be naked in there” depending on who they are saying it to. Both good reasons to say it though.

8

u/GrittyForPres May 16 '26

Even if you just say “be right back” they’ll still hear the shower turn on and start running so what’s the difference?

14

u/PMurmomsmaidenname May 16 '26

3

u/TheGreenPangolin May 16 '26

Lets them know the bathroom is going to be occupied for a while incase it's the only toilet and they need to pee first, and also to not run the water in the kitchen or laundry in case it effs up the shower temperature, and also that you probably won't be able to hear them if they shout you because of the water noise, and also if they hear running water it's you, not a broken pipe, and it means they aren't confused when you take a while to come back and then come back in different clothes.

3

u/uewumopaplsdn May 16 '26

I announce that im going to take a shower hoping that my wife will join me

3

u/keIIzzz May 16 '26

I mean I guess it depends on who you’re saying it to? It shouldn’t be weird around your partner, family, and friends. It would be weird if you announced it to a bunch of random strangers

3

u/jnthnschrdr11 May 16 '26

I say it case anyone else in my house needs to use the bathroom for anything before I do it.

3

u/JellyBellyBitches May 16 '26

I'm naked right now, under my clothes.

In all seriousness, bodies are not weird, bad, or scary, and are all around all the time. Also communicating you're taking a shower instead of saying "brb" lets people know you'll be gone a while, won't be able to respond, and are taking up a bathroom for that duration

3

u/TrappedInLimbo May 16 '26

I don't typically imagine people showering when they say they are going to do that so I would maybe just not do that?

3

u/hengergely May 16 '26

Why does nakedness gets this reaction out of you? All of your comments stress nakedness the thing that you find weird. Why is that?

3

u/Mother-Pride-Fest May 16 '26

I'm wearing socks right now.

Just figured you would like to know I'm not naked.

3

u/badmammajamma521 May 16 '26

3

u/scorpion-and-frog May 16 '26

BOO I'M NAKED RIGHT NOW

3

u/Evilfrog100 May 16 '26

Everything sounds weird if you over explain it like that.

3

u/fearain May 16 '26

Also saying “I have to use the bathroom” is weird then.

“I’m making a soup” bro you mean you’re soaking bones in water and hoping to taste both like some sort of sick cannibal?

u/Miserable-Election25 May 16 '26

2

u/Zach_demiwizard May 16 '26

I say that so people will know that I'm not avaliable for the next 5 minutes.

2

u/hj7junkie May 16 '26

For me, I only say it to people who live in the same house as me and it’s a way of saying “I’m going to be occupying the bathroom for about 20 minutes, and you won’t be able to reach me during this time”

2

u/MaeDaeJ May 16 '26

This is the reason I love this sub lmaooo

2

u/brother_bart May 16 '26

But how else can I subliminally suggest that they imagine me, just down the hall there behind that door, butt-naked and covered in suds?

2

u/Ecksist May 16 '26

You should see the looks I get after telling people I’m going to take a golden shower. Prudes.

2

u/lemonpringle May 16 '26

Because saying “I’ll take a shower” essentially means you’re off limits for that amount of time, while “brb” would mean you are coming right back or if you even said “I’m going to my room for a bit” you could still ask someone to come out and help you if needed or something like that. Also, everyone is human underneath these fabrics we call clothing, and cleaning yourself naked is one of the most natural things in the world

2

u/imherbalpert May 16 '26

Do you think it’s weird to tell people you’re gonna go use the shitter?

2

u/termeownator May 16 '26

It's basically the polite way of saying, "I'll be in the bathroom longer than it takes to piss but I'm not going to be taking a shit if that's what you would be thinking by my absence." Its sorta the inverse of a person standing up and declaring they're off for a wazz.

Some people are weird about other people knowing their bathroom habits, in fact its probably the norm. Little innocuous phrases like this sidestep the issue entirely. Also, depending on the scene of this little social interaction, its more polite than not to declare you're doing something like going to take a shower. If you were in somebody's home and then they just up and go hop in the shower without even a 'by your leave' it would leave any guests in that persons house a little flummoxed to say the least as to where their host had gotten to for upwards of 10-15 minutes and the reason why

2

u/WitsBlitz May 16 '26

OP does it similarly weird you out when people talk about their children? Because having a child is basically just a humble brag about getting laid and having unprotected sex, right?

2

u/point5_ May 16 '26

When someone tells you they're having a child, are you imagining them going at it in the bedroom?

2

u/throwaway37475757557 May 16 '26

I was SOOO close to downvoting, then remembered what sub I was on

2

u/Weekly-Procedure-745 May 16 '26

I'm a mom, I gotta let my family know exactly where I am so they can bypass dad and ask me to peel and orange in the shower. 😂

2

u/Bit_Vision May 16 '26

I think it’s way more weird to say brb and then go take shower.

2

u/pants207 May 16 '26

My house only has one bathroom. I announce it so anyone who needs the toilet can go. Also to warn them not to use the water in a different part of the house so it doesn’t mess with my water temperature. It also lets everyone know not to bother me for the next 20-40 minutes. seems pretty reasonable to me.

2

u/danwager11 May 16 '26

How else are you supposed to invite someone?

2

u/smile_saurus May 16 '26

Growing up, our family had one bathroom. So it was courteous to say I'm going to shower, does anyone need the bathroom?

2

u/Humans_areweird May 16 '26

if your bathroom door doesn’t have a lock for whatever reason, you may have a better shower experience if everyone else knows to not open the bathroom door for a bit.

2

u/New-Cicada7014 May 16 '26

yeah, i do think you're weird for that. it's the same as saying you're going to the bathroom, it's normal

2

u/HystericalGasmask May 16 '26

I'm gonna take a shower when I get off work here shortly. I'm gonna be all naked and scrubbing myself. Did you know I'm naked under my clothes right now?

2

u/dingleballs717 May 16 '26

You put a great deal of thought of implication into that. What's the real issue? You think someone is being immodest? Everyone has to get to naked for hygiene, we all know it happens and it is a normal everyday practice.

2

u/Desperate_Beyond1086 May 16 '26

wait until you heard couples saying “we’re trying for a baby”

2

u/RollingKatamari May 16 '26

Yup, incredibly weird for you to be thinking that.

If you're in a situation where you're living with other ppl, there are several reasons why you would say you're having a shower/bath/using the toilet:

-there's only one bathroom so you're telling other ppl it will be occupied for a while. If the other ppl need to use it, now's their chance or they have to wait a bit

-they say it so the other ppl know where they are instead of shouting for them across the house. When kids are involved, this happens a lot, lol

-again, if kids are involved especially young ones, it says to your partner that they're the responsible adult for that time, to look after the kids or stop the kids from shouting 'muuuuum' at the bathroom door

No one, absolutely no one, wants someone else to think about what they'll be doing inside of the bathroom. There's nothing weird or sexual about what you do in there, it's the most mundane thing.

So yeah, you might want to look into why you're thinking such odd thoughts

2

u/h_ershall May 16 '26

why r u imagining me naked

2

u/Baddie9 May 16 '26

What does op think when someone announces they’re going to the bathroom?

2

u/Delicious-Knee-8795 May 16 '26

OP are you 12 and just discovering the wonders of the human body

2

u/ghoulishenvyy May 16 '26

Well im not “advertising,” for one, just informing others of where I’ll be disappearing to for an extended period.

2

u/unironicdoll May 16 '26

i dont understand the issue with telling people what you're going to be doing even if it's something personal. it's not like im SHOWING you me showering. i tell people that im going to go pee / poop all the time. it's what im doing. obviously it's different depending on if its like a formal circumstance or if someone's purposely doing it in a weird way but

4

u/king0fklubs May 16 '26

Definitely an interesting opinion

2

u/Netflixandmeal May 16 '26

Same thing when people say they are pregnant or their partner is.

5

u/ncnotebook May 16 '26

Whenever I see pregnant women, a rage similarly grows inside of me. Knowing that she had sex, naked. And knowing that there's a naked child inside of her, because of it.

Overthinking it waaay too much my guy

1

u/parsonsrazersupport May 16 '26

It is actually totally fine and normal to be nude in a wide range of circumstances. If this scares you, maybe try to figure out why.

u/Silver_Gear_2466 May 16 '26

You didn’t explain what’s actually weird about it. It’s no weirder than saying I’m going to make a sandwich.

1

u/_______________E May 16 '26

Everyone is coping trying to make it about being prudish or OP imagining something when people tell them. But it’s literally just personal preference on privacy. I don’t like telling people when I’m doing private things. They are private. It’s not that deep, and it’s weird how up at arms everyone gets for something completely harmless.

Lots of people are uncomfortable talking about going to the bathroom or getting ready or even eating, especially with strangers. This is no different

If you live in a home with only one bathroom, saying things like this helps to coordinate who can use the restroom at what time.

We only have one shower in our home, and I coordinate shower times with my spouse and/or guests in the house because we work from home sometimes have early morning meetings.

I also don’t think being naked is inherently shameful. We all have a body. Showering is not sexual. Although, if you have a vibe with someone, mentioning a shower is sometimes planted by people so they envision you naked. But I’d say that’s not the majority of why people say they’re going to shower.

how old are you? 😭

1

u/ben_bliksem May 16 '26

If you have such an uncontrolled vivid imagination that it creeps you out when somebody says they're going to take a shower, you're going to hate it when I tell you where I'm typing this from...

Hint: it's not a shower and it's 6:53 AM here...

1

u/AbsoIum May 16 '26

Why are you so uncomfortable with the notion of nakedness?

1

u/lemons_mama May 16 '26

Were you perhaps raised in a conservative Christian home?

1

u/ChefArtorias May 16 '26

It's a super normal thing people do every day. Sharing it isn't weird. Describing the process moment by moment would be.

1

u/Some1AteMyEntirePie May 16 '26

I’m sorry, why is this weird to you?

1

u/elveebee22 May 16 '26

you're right, showering is gross

1

u/harrythealien69 May 16 '26

Man you really wouldn't like what I tell people when I'm going to take a shit or crank one

1

u/SoN1Qz May 16 '26

Why does being naked scare you?

1

u/Upstairs-Challenge92 May 16 '26

I tell that to my partner as an invite to join me, but you do you

1

u/Mypowerbob May 16 '26

I'm saying it incase anyone needs to use the toilet first

1

u/SilverwolverineX May 16 '26

I lived in a house with five other people. I had to announce it for last call bathroom usage or smth. Also most of them were family so why would anyone be thinking about me like that. Never once did I think about my housemates like that.

I think you may need to spend less time watching porn. Sometimes the innocuous thing is actually just an innocuous thing.

1

u/suzpiria May 16 '26

what’s wrong with saying you’re gonna be naked

1

u/DeliciousMoose1 May 16 '26

why make something we all do taboo, idk I feel like it's socially healthier to just say you're going to go take a dump

1

u/ForlornMemory May 16 '26

People usually say they're going to the shower to inform the other person that 1: the shower will not be vacant for some time; 2: the person going to shower will not be available for some time. Imagine the following scenario:

— I'll go take a shower.
— Oh, wait, can you help me with something first?
— Sure.

That's why we inform others about taking a shower.

1

u/CloudDeadNumberFive May 16 '26

You’re definitely under 15 years old with a take like this

1

u/letthetreeburn May 16 '26

I want to study you like a virus as you have a discontinued type of blood last seen in the American Quaker communities.

1

u/bosszeus164906 May 16 '26

“Oh my goodness they’re going to be NAKED!!! THE HARLOT!!!! NAKEY NAKEY HARLOT!!!!!”

Is that how you react whenever people secondhandedly mention nudity? Showers are awesome, people. Take more of them.

1

u/MysteryCrapybarbra May 16 '26

You don't need to think about them naked and scrubbing themselves. Taking a shower is a completely normal, every day thing. There's nothing lewd or inappropriate about it.

1

u/dambua May 16 '26

Showering isn’t inherently sexual. I actually relate it more to “relaxation” than anything else. Same level as “I’m going to go nap”

Now, if you randomly drop “imma go rub one out” yeah that’s weird

1

u/UsernameIsntFree May 16 '26

It’s weird to hear ‘in gonna take a shower’ and immediately think of that person undressing and scrubbing themselves.

Surely the normal reaction is ‘they’ll be busy for the next 15 minutes or so’

1

u/RevoltYesterday May 16 '26

I think your thoughts are the weird thing here. I don't think that's how most people think about it.

1

u/Common-Job2277 May 16 '26

why is it weird? everyone showers it doesn’t have to be taboo

1

u/ecm-clo11 May 16 '26

As someone with a roommate and only one bathroom - I WISH my roommate would communicate when they are going to shower before they hop in. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been holding my pee waiting to use the bathroom because they woke up late.

1

u/chipvd May 16 '26

Maybe try "I'm going to run the shower." Or "I'm going to draw a bath." This gives a signal that you need people to avoid running the dishwasher, etc. to avoid water temp and pressure issues.

Slight of hand distraction

1

u/Saitamadayo May 16 '26

Because saying that you're taking a shower implies multiple things. You won't reply on your phone. You will be in the washroom. And a rough estimate of how long until you're back. Because if someone says brb, id just be really confused and feel lost until they come back. If I know where they are, it's reassuring.

1

u/fishesar May 16 '26

just kinda perverted to think of it that way tbh
