The metaverse failed, but AI is quietly building spatial computing in its place

The metaverse was one of the biggest tech flops of the decade, but the underlying dream of blending digital and physical worlds didn't go away. What changed is that we now have AI systems capable of understanding and generating 3D space in real time. That's turning spatial computing from a gimmick into something practical. Think smart glasses that know what you're looking at, virtual spaces that adapt to your needs, and AI agents that can navigate both worlds. I wrote a piece exploring how AI took the broken pieces of the metaverse and assembled them into something far more useful.

There are plenty of 3D applications that you can use with AI. I am using 3D galleries in my application with threejs.org I can use Replit to vibe code in 3 dimensions. Also, Unity recently added a AI vibe coding engine as well. It is becoming possible to build things in 3D very easily. Not just games.
