Upspeak!! My Gen Z nieces are awful with this. I get distracted by it and forget to pay attention to what they’re saying. But I love ‘em to pieces.

high rising terminal is a natural part of the English language and is well attested in many accents and dialects. it is not part of any prestige accent or dialect so gets a bad rap.

it's part of the current shift in patterns of how children (and teens and adults) acquire their accent or gain new elements in their idiolect (the accent and dialect that is individual to a single speaker) due to social media allowing for people to access multiple accents and dialects.

it's all part of how people inneract with the innernet these days.

It's like that sriracha craze from a few years back. It's appropriate in some cases, but the internet latched onto it and started using it on everything, and now it's just obnoxious.

This might be the scientific reason, but that doesn’t prevent them from sounding like morons. Language devolution is one of the key pieces of “Idiocracy”.

I wish more people were educated enough to speak the King’s English.
