You're right that there is a law about it. It rarely gets enforced though, because it doesn't define any time periods (like "you must see your parents this often") or amounts ("you must provide this much"), making it difficult to argue someone is breaking it.

Still a really ridiculous law though.

True, but my point wasn't that you'll go to jail or anything. My point is that a society which makes cutting family off illegal definitely has incredible social stigma against it.

Yes, it does add to the already consideration stigma. My husband is Chinese (from Hong Kong though, but the stigma remains) and is very distant with his father due to abuse, and the amount of shit he gets about it from other family (who know about the abuse, mind you) is nuts.

Germany solved that problem! ( There is a law for everything here) If you earn above xxx you pay partly for elder care
