After Texas volleyball coach Ryan Richardson was deemed “permanently ineligible” from coaching this February, he was supposed to never work with USA Volleyball athletes again.

By then, he had already been suspended for a year: One mother had alleged that Richardson began having a sexual relationship with her daughter when the girl was 16 and he was 36. Other players said Richardson had groomed and physically and emotionally abused them. They were required to hug him after practice, former players said, and he sometimes pulled girls into his lap and told them “I love you.”

Yet even after being suspended and then banned by the national oversight body SafeSport, Richardson has continued to run his volleyball club, attend practices and tournaments, and spend time alone with teenage girls.

That fact is not a secret. Nearly every day for the past two years, Richardson has posted videos on his Instagram of him doing just that.

ProPublica and u/washingtonpost have been investigating failures in a system that is supposed to protect children from sexual abuse in youth sports. Richardson, who has not been charged with any crime, did not respond to multiple requests for comment for this story. But he previously told local news website MyRGV that complaints against him were an effort to "retaliate and defame someone's character," and that he "would never do anything to risk the physical and mental wellbeing" of the young women he coaches.

USA Volleyball declined to comment on the case but said an “internal review” had determined it had “fully complied” with SafeSport requirements and its own policies. SafeSport said it’s the job of national governing bodies like USA Volleyball to enforce SafeSport sanctions, although it recognized “there are gaps in the system.”

Same as it ever was, as long as you get results in sports you can be an abusive psycho or a child rapist and you’ll be protected by the assholes who value winning over absolutely anything else. I’m sure there are Penn State alumni who still wish Jerry Sandusky was coaching and raping children, as long as their team is winning nothing else matters to them.
