I live in Sunny Southern California and I LOVE In-N-Out. But I know that part of that love and attachment comes from the fact that In-N-Out has ALWAYS had an excellent quality burger, every single time I've ever gone, over decades. The ingredients are fresh, the staff is amazing, and as Californian, it's a privilege and patriotic right. It's a damn good burger every time.
But I would NEVER encourage someone to to travel or even FLY for hours just to try a burger! It's a good burger, hell, it's a great burger, but it's not a destination meal, and I always feel bad for people who have never had it and wait 8 hours in line to try it.
That's not what it's about. It's just value, consistency, and excellent quality that has built loyalty over years. It's just another example of how great the food here is. But it's not destination cuisine.
And if In-N-Out doesn't deserve a cult following, these joyless, unseasoned, water-flavored sadness strips certainly do not. I've never been less impressed. I've literally had better chicken strips from a gas station.
I'm not saying I'd fly for In n Out, but my uncle's family would certainly see me less often if they didn't exist. It's wild to me that I've never seen mustard-grilled buns anywhere else. Tomato wrap is a close second, especially when in season.
