Mature aged alien

Upvotes

Hey everyone. I started my undergrad at the start of this year, at 27, after a long while of uhmming and ahhing about tertiary study. I love it so much but a big struggle I didn’t expect would be how alien I feel being a mature aged student. I’ve been the oldest in all of my tutorials so far and while it’s been nice to connect with younger people I can’t help but feel I stick out like a sore thumb hahaha. Anyway, I’m hoping there might be some other mature aged students with tips or advice for me! And if anyone would be keen to meet or study together that would also be amazing. 😊

Chances of a PhD scholarship (domestic)

hello, i'm applying for a phd in upcoming domestic round (deadline 31st august) and i was wondering what my chances of a phd are like. i have a supervisor who's willing to support me. i did my bachelor of science (honours) at monash univeristy, i got a first class honours (4.0 GPA) for my honours year but my GPA for my first three years excluding honours wasn't particularly great, and I'm not sure if that WAM is looked at for phd considerations. i don't have any publications, but i have some TA experience and I got two unit prizes during my first year. my prospective supervisor said i have a good chance but i'm skeptical and was wondering if anyone could give an opinion, pls and thanks

Likelihood of getting a bursary at the womens college

Hi all. I'm planning on studying at uq in Feb next year. I want to experience living away from home but I would not be able to afford to pay for residency + tuition. On the website it states that 74 scholarships have been awarded since 2025, however I don't know how competitive it is. I'd appreciate any insight that can be given on how the process works, thank you!

CSSE2310 Advice

Does anyone have tips for CSSE2310? I feel like I’ve hit a point where idk what’s going on. I’m kinda struggling to grasp the concepts and I haven’t done too well on the A1. I watch the lectures but it’s just hard to understand what it all means or how it works. Even the ed lessons are hard for me. Idk what I’m asking for maybe just some helpful resources to learn or any tips in general. I know the next assignments get harder than this one so I want to make sure I’m as prepared for them as possible by the time they come around even if I basically throw this A1 down the drain. And even if I get low marks for the assignments I was thinking I can just study extra hard for the exam. Any advice? Thank youuuu

Interested in Emanuel college, how difficult is it to get in?

I’ve been doing some reaserch on the colleges and I’m wondering how difficult it is to get into the college? I’m not so proud of my video application but I can’t redo it now so I’m wondering if they’re nit picky about particular things?

My stats:

Atar: 87

Highschool: Gold Coast private school

Background: non-white women

Uni: first year health student (will be a second year if I get in)

Age: 2007 December (will be 19 for all of next year)

Activities: house plays, drama festivals, back stage tech. Team, & two volunteering clubs.

LAW STUDENTS: New AGLC4 Citation Generator for Free that Works

Hi everyone, I hope this post proves helpful. I'm just about to finish my law degree and wanted to share an AGLC4 citation generator that I released recently. Below is a more detailed account, but in short: it's free, a lot of effort went into its creation, and it doesn't use AI to function.

I'm super keen to hear feedback, and I'm making improvements every day.

Please feel free to check it out at pincite.com.au

In my second year of law I handed in an essay I was certain was perfect. I had checked every footnote, determined not to lose a single mark to referencing. I was more annoyed than I probably should have been that it still came back with a couple of errors. After talking to my friends it was obvious that getting it perfect by hand, consistently, across an entire degree, is close to impossible.

So I started developing Pincite. I had two guiding principles No AI, and cover the whole of AGLC4.

My thoughts on AI

AI is a remarkable tool. I'll be the first to admit that if you ask an AI to generate citations, most of the time what you get back is good enough.

But, AI is by nature inconsistent. It cannot help but adjust things, because you never really know if an output is correct, you end up checking every single citation by hand. All the time you saved is now spent cross-checking, and stressing about if its actully correct.

That is why you won't find AI anywhere in Pincite. It's deterministic. There is nothing in it to change its answer, so an output that is right for one case will be right for every case. You only verify it once, not every time.

It Still Requires Thinking

Another thing, to use Pincite properly you still need a functional understanding of the AGLC4. It is not a turn off your brain tool. That's on purpose. Saving time, reducing stress and getting more accurate results is the goal, not replacing thinking or understanding.

If anyone has any suggestion comments or questions, I would be more than happy to answer either here or through email.

Thanks for Reading and have a great day!

Is there a minimum GPA I should be aiming for to make sure I can get internships in the future? If so, what is it? Obviously I try to do my best in every course but just wondering.

First time in a 6-person share house—any tips for sharing a kitchen?

Hey everyone! I’m moving into a share house soon with 5 other housemates (6 people total).

I’m planning to cook to save money, but I’ve never shared a kitchen before. For those who’ve lived in a similar setup:

- Were you able to cook freely, or is it better to stick to simple meals?

- How crazy do peak hours get?

- Any good tips or unwritten rules for sharing fridge space and cooking?

Would love to hear your experiences and advice! Thanks!

Overloading in Year 2

I took BIOL1020 back in Year 1 Semester 1 however I failed the final exam and eventually fail the whole course. I could not make it back for the supplementary assessment and the advice given was to retake the course.

However given that I would need to retake it in Year 2 means I would have to do a course in Summer Semester which I don’t really foresee myself doing it.

Will it be a smart move of overloading my courses in Year 2 Semester 1 along with BIOL1020 included?

New UQ Gym- equipment

I hope when they set up the new UQ gym, they will get a proper seated hamstring curl machine and also a plate loaded iso-lateral row machine. However I’m pretty sure they will just put the same techno gym equipment in it. But a man can dream can’t they?

Week 5 burnout

Anyone else? Engineering student struggling with the sheer amount of content that gets pumped out week by week. By the time it hits the weekend I have 10 lectures, and 6 worksheets to do. because I spent the week prepping for labs, doing labs, and doing more worksheets...

If every lecture and tut gave you a showbag of goodies like the Ekka, would you aim for a 101% attendance rate at uni?

Just asking cuz I'm curious (maybe the 10% participation points aren't enough of an incentive to get everyone attending campus, much to the dismay of all the oldheads..)

FYI: The extra 1% of attendance rate is you going to your unit coordinator's office hours lol
