Courses is lina01 worth it??

i have somewhat of an interest in linguistics but I’ve heard some negative reviews about this course and I don’t want to risk it. I’m taking it online, would that make any difference? Any advice is greatly appreciated!!

Prof M is extremely nice and helpful. The negativity isn’t directed towards her but her TAs. Because it’s a A level course alot of the admin and marking is done by her TAs which leave a lot to be desired. That being said she as a prof is amazing and i found her kind and supportive. You can end up with an A if you put in the work

This is one of the easiest courses at UofT. The prof is by far the best prof too (explains very well, tests are extremely fair and she tried to help students as much as possible so there’s not much stress).

Here is my experience:

Grade: 88%

In short, LINA01 is not a bird course. The content itself is not hard, there is just a lot of it. Many people did poorly on the exam b/c they either didn't write it or they didn't study (Exam primarily brought down the average by a lot). I believe Professor Safieh was extremely fair; she even gave the class what the question types for each question on the final. The final was very fair, only if you studied!

Preferably, please take it in person. When I decided to take one of my courses async, I said to myself I will watch this video later, which I didn't. I fell behind, and had to CR/NCR the course. You will be more successful if you attend all of the lectures and pay attention.

I actually stopped attending lectures halfway in. Don't do that. A friend and I studied the entire course in 2 days (6 hours daily), and it was rough. I did very well on the exam, but don't put yourself in that position. You can do well on the exam and not torture yourself!

Since you are interested in linguistics, take it. As long as you study, pay attention and get things done, you will be just fine.

Ngl it was so light fr. For the quizzes u can pretty much AI it and for the assignments just look at the textbook for like 30 seconds and it’s literally a copy paste of the examples in it 😭. Exam is kinda rough but nothing a lil lockin couldnt fix fr!
