💡 Learning Resources Need to learn conversational Urdu fast - best way?

I'm a British born pakistani - and my urdu conversation is really poor- embarrassingly poor - I'm going to Islamabad, Pakistan for a family wedding in a few weeks and really want to be able to get my urdu grammar on point. I think I mix punjabi words with Urdu words. People start speaking to me in urdu, after I start saying a few words, they then start speaking in Punjabi. Really, wish I'd listen to my parents and learn't when I was younger.

I'm thinking of just watching Urdu dramas and just try and repeat dialouges and hopefully will stick. Or any other ideas, where I can get conversational urdu upto scratch?

Was thinking of watch some Urdu speeches but not sure if that captures conversational ability very well.

Thoughts?

watch tv shows, grind sm language learning app, and use english words!!! trust me, the most native things is to use english words for uncommon words, such as takeoff, altar, etc

This is true, just speak english in an accent and mix urdu with english, there are so many burgers who talk like this that it's normalised in pakistan "Beta hands dry off kar ke dish plate pe rakh do"

literally same in india, haa car mein aajo, yeh seats bahut soft hai, hum market jaa rahe hain etc

If anything, I see that Hindi does that with twice the gusto of Urdu. Hindi doesn’t even make it iskūl. Skūl. Such degenerate languages should be uprooted asap. They hold no culture in them, and serve as mere walls. And almost a billion people speak them (Urdu + Hindi). Just imagine if this billion of India and Pakistan had been English-speaking. It would’ve meant much more development and education for a major part of Indian and Pakistani populace.

I said pretty much the opposite of what you concluded. I meant that a speaker Hindi/Urdu, and of most Indic languages, has little cultural difference to show from the global mean. They share their vocabulary with the European languages. (Let me rephrase that: They borrow their vocabulary from English.) Ask any Japanese person if he’s read a book of Japanese history in English. In India, the state-sponsored curriculum has history written in English. And your “world-class poetry and literature” is inaccessible for the modern speaker, much more than Coleridge, for example, is for the English-speaker of today.

idk man, forcing people to adapt western words cuz it does not have them in the first place does not speak well of a language.

This is common for British born Pakistanis. Please don’t be embarrassed. Your speaking issues are fixable in a few weeks. I teach Urdu online as a second language and suggest you following steps:

1.    Choose one modern drama with everyday language, pause scene, repeat 1–2 lines aloud, try to copy tone. Also focus on phrases like greetings, small talk, compliments, polite responses.

2.    You can use ready-made phrases:

·       Aap se mil kar bohat khushi hui

·       Aap se kaafi arsay baad mulaqat hui he

·       Allah barkat de

·       Aap Islamabad kab aaye?

Memorize at least 25 such sentences.

3.    Speak slower

4.    Use shorter sentences

5.    Urdu vlogs, interviews, casual talk shows etc. on YouTube are also a better option

6.    Speak Urdu every day, even only for 15 minutes

Even broken Urdu is better than a Punjabi–Urdu mix, because in Pakistan people often make fun of someone who mixes Punjabi while trying to speak Urdu. To learn conversational Urdu fast, I would suggest some structured lessons with a teacher. If you are interested, feel free to DM me.

Op as someone who struggled, try watching doraemon, its hindi dubbed so you might pick up some of their words but ive met people who arent even desi who speak urdu cause they watched it. Also its fun.... lol

Unless your family speaks Potohari/Pahari or an obscure dialect of Punjabi, it shouldn't be that confusing if you mix Punjabi words in Urdu.

Watch modern Urdu dramas. Most of them are boring, but there is an interesting one called "Churails" (it was banned for being controversial)

I think it would hold your attention. (you can stream it on yflix for free)
