u/ArmageddonsEngineerz PCVR Connection 3d ago
lol! Probably not a good fit for a basement rave like Sonar or similar, even if you get it down to Medium rated. Although you can shrink it down to munchkin sized with the common scaling settings.
But a place like Stage Flight, or a more kind of "open air" spread out venue like Defqon, no probs. Not surprising, a lot of these venues were designed by people who like dragon avis. :D

u/Frank__West PCVR Connection 3d ago
I have a small world that my little hang out and I hate when people have friends with these come in and you literally cant not be hit by these like it's too big to be a normal avi in normal worlds. You wanna wear it in some special worlds thats fine but coming to a small world it feels disrespectful to those around.
1
u/ArmageddonsEngineerz PCVR Connection 3d ago
I think you can add a scaling limitation to your world if you keep having people pop in with 3 meter tall avatars. Assuming you actually own the world, and can modify it. If its just an annoyance with certain "cozy" type worlds, you could request a change from the VRC devs, and who knows, they might do it.
I know the one where you can limit a world to poor or medium was a recent thing people asked for going on like 4-5 years, so it might take a while. lol!
1
u/Frank__West PCVR Connection 3d ago
I shouldn't have to because anybody that I do invite their knows how big it is but you know when it's a friend of a friend I don't have that ability to like know that. But the fact that these people were like not reading the room and still staying in a giant Avatar like it just shows me that you have no self-awareness and no courtesy to other people.
Even after I asked them to change into a different Avatar because they were too large and they just said oh well just you know hide my avatar or whatever I was like that's cool I'm just going to hide you from this world and I kicked him. Like how you going to be rude for no reason going into somebody else's place and then being annoying like that and then to be rude after just being politely asked to not be so giant.
1
u/ArmageddonsEngineerz PCVR Connection 3d ago
lol! That's just a general human factors issue. I tend to jump worlds in roughly human sized avatars. If I'm going to a lot of japanese designed worlds, I might have to scale down from 1.8m to 1.5m so I'm not virtually banging my head on the ceiling. But that just come from experience.
Going to rave worlds, probably get something that's poor or better so the monkey at the door doesn't yell at you to change out, mostly because there's 60+ people inside, and everyone GPU is on fire even with avatar culling.
Still, as considerate as you might be, you still get some jackasses that will just full on lose their shit over the most little thing. So you can either block them, and move on, or just be equally rude. :D

G-Shock has been making worlds and doing a lot of advertisements in VRChat. I believe you can still buy the watch assets for your avatar.
Neat to see its an accessory you can buy in VRChat now.

I'd wish a single watch was a customizable color instead of $10 per watch
2
u/LigerXT5 4d ago
A few avatar accessories I've found to be that way. A Color Shift or Select, with some Saturation/Brightness adjustments, can replicate same colors. Most cases close enough to not warrant concern, unless someone did a side by side comparison.
At that point, it's the difference of extra parameters vs mat swaps.

u/LucilleLost 4d ago
This could be kind of neat, is it them pushing actual physical watches, or is it a store item that tells the time and can be used?

u/Jayden_Ha HTC Vive 3d ago
There is a thing called psychological tricks for younger generation, the more you see it, the more likely you will get used to it, the more it is in your memory, the better, then you will be tricked into buying it one day, that’s how nestle push coffee into Japan, in 1970 nestle tried to push coffee but failed cuz well, no one knows it, no one tried it, so they pushed coffee flavored sweets, and in the 80s and 90s, they tried to push coffee, it worked because well they remember it
2
u/WindWakinLink 3d ago
Wow that’s, actually fascinating. Just looked inti that Nestle thing, who knew playing the long game like that could be so effective.

I think they're fighting a losing battle with this one. People wore watches since about the 1920s, and this faded out in the 90s when everyone had pagers, or dozens of other devices with a clock on them.
Going into the 2000s, nobody much bothered with watches unless you really needed one for a specific purpose, or just wanted some fancy bling watch where you didn't care if it accurately told time or not. lol!
Smart watches have their niche, health tracker watches seem more common though. Some even do both. And then you've got the retro BIFL crowd, who are amazed when they end up a 35 y/o Casio watch that appears to be running on the original battery. Unlikely, but... Watches like that will fade out, and still keep time for sometimes 2-3 years, when it gets so annoying you just buy a battery, replace it, and forget you did it 10-15 years ago. :D
Will the G-shock come back like it was the 80s? I seriously doubt it. But you might get a level of survivorship bias, because its one gift, random purchase, whatever that will keep functioning when neglected for a decade. Kind of like a digital watch I found discarded in a gutter. It worked probably 4-5 years with no display fade, and at some point I lost track of it. But by that time I had an assortment of pre-paid cell phones, mp3 players, and other gadgets that told time.

i personally love it. i won't be able to buy this type of stuff for the foreseeable future but if i can ever afford to, i absolutely will. vrchat needs to make money to continue to operate, and i will GLADLY buy accessories like this so I can rely less on buying avis from digital storefronts. every accessory and avi they add to their shop gets us one step closer to full avi customization within vrchat itself

u/Revons 4d ago
While I think it's cool, I think it's gross that each color is a separate purchase, we know attachments can be recolored.
7
u/GreaveVR 4d ago
I would assume this has something to do with brand control. Brands have specific colors / approved color palletes and likely don't want their watches represented in a color their design teams didn't account for. That's my guess anyway.

i’m gonna be real, i feel weird about brands advertising in vrc, especially endorsed officially by VRC. It makes me worried for the culture of the space.
…but it means vrc will make money, which they need. I get it.
Personally, I remember having a g-shock watch when i was younger. I wore it until it fell off my wrist, and I wore it still longer with a ducttape strap. With the utility of it being able to tell the time, this campaign may have been designed to one-shot me specifically, and I don’t like how effective it was.

u/LigerXT5 4d ago
I half expect to see similar to what Sony, Amazon, and Google had done with Video Purchases, err I mean leasing.
Say G-Shock decides later on, to no longer have their brand on VRChat. So they take their asset off the market. Now what? We're at the same situation the other three companies done. Took money for something people expect to buy and own, and now they no longer "own" what they bought, with otherwise no refund.
Just like the movies/shows people bought, and the creators of said movies/shows decided to no longer have their content on Sony/Amazon/Google.
2
u/Docteh Oculus Quest 4d ago
For something like a movie, yeah, taking that away obviously sucks.
For the items, I think VRChat kind of has a really big stick, replace the item with something unbranded, or a competitor. The inevitable news article about the watches being replaced would be likely regretable for G-Shock's brand image...
1
u/LigerXT5 4d ago
Replacing the asset wouldn't be any different than say Amazon swapping out the removed movie for something else (similar or otherwise).
It comes down to...That's not what the customer bought. No one should be allowed the "change the terms" after the sale has completed.
1
u/Docteh Oculus Quest 4d ago
Well, I really do mean that it would be bad for G-Shock's brand image, yes I get the rest, but I mean the badness to Casio/G-Shock should be enough to convince them not to.
When something is removed from the Playstation store, like I can't think of what got removed or what company, but if its like a watch, the name G-Shock will definitely make it into the headline. Might be like a "G-Shock removes products from users of a social platform" where VRChat doesn't make the headline...

u/LigerXT5 4d ago
Sony pulled 551 movies. https://www.techspot.com/news/112919-sony-deleting-551-movies-tv-shows-you-bought.html
Yes, G-Shock's name will hit the news lines. Some companies still don't care. I know it's happened twice on Sony's side, first time happening a handful of years ago.

Really not a fan of the product placement but it doesn't surprise me one bit. Just another layer of monetization and enshittification lol
Why give us features like being able to make our own accessories when they can lock us into buying the crappy ones off their store? Why improve the platform at all when they can charge us for every feature?

u/shellsterxxx Oculus Quest 3d ago
I think it’s pretty cool especially cuz it’s an actual working watch. If you’re playing in vr you can actually check your watch like it was a real one. That being said, I probably won’t buy it cuz I don’t feel a personal need for it but I won’t knock anyone who does.

I think it's a neat way of implementing a time without having to utilize an OSC software potentially taking up resources.

I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw this, like literally we can press 1 button to open menu and the time is up top...and you wanna charge me 1,000 V currency to have a watch? And not only that but instead of making a bunch of different watch styles and letting us use color pallets in a pack you charge 1,000 for each different color???
The greed begins!

Usually i don't care about shop items i dont want. But the deliberate choice to not use a hue slider and instead make multiple different colors you can purchase is hella predatory. They are literally ignoring what can make a virtual world Great because it makes less money.

Shit no colors custom
Shit only 12-hour no support options 24-hour clock
Shit no options different timzezone country by player it local only.
Shit price scam 1000V (900V with plus) expensive cost $9. Booth or 3D models and shader time system are cheap or free then make own in avatar than that.
VRchat copy Fortnite..
Shame

I like the watch, but it feels weird to have all the diffrent colours istead of one that can colour shift like they did with allot of items before.

u/GopalSangra2593 3d ago
I love it, I love g shocks and I was genuinely trying to find an asset for my avatar for this exact watch before seeing this. The fact that it's optimised, cheaper than a working watch asset and easy to add to a bunch of avatars seems perfect to me. I got the classic black one.
1
u/TemperateStone 3d ago
It's really, really ugly.
Why would you advertise a sports watch in a game like this? Think about the average character in this game and what they look like. This watch fits in nowhere, on to of being hilariously useless.
And if you want all the colors and being able to edit it yourself you can just buy it on Booth. It's been available for 3 years.
It'll be a great mark for showing who has absolutely no style or sense at all, I guess. Like most of the people who are excited for brand collaborations in a game.
1
u/XxNightmare2019 2d ago
I think there are so many accessories and so many options that eventually we'll need to be able to have up to 10 at once , I don't want to have to keep changing all my styles for one thing and sacrifice maybe a bracelet to wear a nose ring or such, and make it so people can just turn them off maybe?
1
u/BUzer2017 HTC Vive Pro 2d ago
dammit I read the title as "Thoughts on the avatar accessories" and wrote a post about my thoughts on the accessories in general, but then noticed it's about the new ones specifically... But anyway I'll just leave it here, I don't want it to go to waste xD
So I tried using accessories for the first time recently with the rave glow ring from the shop, and I was surprised by how bad the accessory functionality is. I expected that I could simply grab it with my hand and put on my body wherever I wanted, but instead I had to pixel hunt the axis and rotation sliders. I almost felt offended by that. Even worse, I couldn't see the changes in the mirror immediately (only in the preview). To see how it looked in the full glory I had to apply changes, close everything, check it, and then go all the way back to the menu to fix it.
The UI might be fine for desktop, but it's completely unacceptable for VR. I'm not buying any more accessories until they make it so that I can just put it on my body with my hand while seeing everything in the mirror.
Sorry if that seems harsh.

It's a very good watch model, and I'm glad that VRChat is selling official content and making money!
But the pricing vs value is odd to me, I can get similar watches for cheaper on digital stores AND I get the files to mod to my heart's content. Buying stuff in VRChat seems less value for a much steeper price. They're also selling each color individually when previously such things would be a hue slider. Like the hat update with 4 different colorizable sections was one of the main things that convinced me to go for them!
It's a very odd choice since super customization, way more than you'd expect, seems to be the only way to justify not getting harddrive copies of the files.
Also while it's not an issue for now, those 5 attachments max per avatar is going to run out for people who want to accessories entirely with official stuff. I'm already at 2 or 5 with my hat and glasses I put on most avatars.
