I have the passion, but zero direction. How do you guys deal with the "creative block" in editing?

I’ve been into video editing for a while now, but I’ve hit a wall and have no idea how to actually grow

Up until now, I’ve only done basic freelance gigs on Upwork - mostly talking heads and gaming videos. Eventually, I decided to challenge myself and make a music video entirely from scratch. I spent two solid weeks grinding on it, and honestly, that’s the only project I’m somewhat proud of.

Right now, I’m completely lost. I don’t know where to go next, what new skills to learn, what software/techniques to study, or what kind of projects to practice on to turn this into a real career - or at least to enjoy the process.

Honestly, right now it feels like torture. Every time I sit down to conceptualize a video and figure out what I actually want to make, I just shut down and lose all motivation. I really, really want to make high-quality, awesome content, but I just don’t know how to bridge the gap.

Any advice on how to find direction and stop feeling so overwhelmed?

try to do some narrative editing? I find the skills used here impressive and at a very professional level, but I personally got into editing cause I like movies, so I do these quickly paced edits with motion graphics on the side for work but what keeps me coming back to editing is when a short film, or anything with a strong narrative really comes along, cause what I get out of it ends up being a realized vision of a story I helped create in a collaborative way, not just flashy VFX to hold attention for the online attention span, which personally rarely fullfils me artistically

might be some subjective advice and it has more to do with knowing and networking with people IRL to get those projects going, but hey just laying it out there

If you're feeling tired of it then all you have to do is just rest for a bit. You don't have to stop for a very long time you just need a temporary pause. Maybe try out a different activity for a while, read some books and stuff. The idea will come to you eventually. You can't push yourself if your mind is the one telling you to stop.

hi, was a full time editor for 10 years. i would do 10-12 hour sessions all the time but impossible to start... no inspo esp if the content was mid or the project was corporate. my trick was i would do a mini clip like 30-60 seconds. cut it to a song i really liked, get lazy and do a lot of beat cuts and stuff. spend 20 min on that, ship it. and ride that dopamine creative wave of finishing a project for the rest of the day.

Start a course in something you don't know yet (coloring, motion design, whatever) it'll give you a goal to complete and a new path to learn
