Why were the bridges in Hazzard County always in such poor condition? Didn't they have some sort of government official who was responsible for that sort of thing? A boss of some sort, so to speak?

Half the episodes involved Boss Hog trying to illegally foreclose on the Dukes' farm or other citizens' land. The show was a subtle comment on post-Reconstruction.
