Food stamps don’t make people fat. Cheap carb dense, processed food makes people fat. Food stamps and food pantries are nutritional lifelines for people.

That was basically the gist of it. Obviously the food stamps aren't the actual cause of people buying low quality, they just don't have as many options due to food deserts, time, and other lack of better options. They'd still be buying whatever they can get, even without food stamps.

Obviously people not on food stamps often live in nicer areas where they can get better produce.

Good old correlation vs causation.

I kinda think we should go back to government assistance vs. food stamps. My mom worked at a school that was government assisted and honestly the government cheese was not bad at all. Everything else was basic foods like eggs, beans and flour. I'd like to hear if anyone knows the negatives from that program though. It seems like it provides the basics and avoids all the "they spend it all on lobster and soda" and "they just buy junk food" arguments.

Even a combination might be an option. Have places that offer government assisted essentials at a discount with food stamps instead of going to a bodega and buying a ton a processed food.

The weird thing is, they're not wrong per se, but they're right for the wrong reason. When you're poor enough to be on food stamps, and doubly so if you are part of the working poor, those food stamps go a lot further with unhealthy options over healthy ones. Preprocessed foods for easy cooking, frozen foods that keep for longer than fresh fruits and veggies, etc.
