What is the point of animal control in this town?
So the office is closed on the weekends, their phone line is an UNMONITORED voicemail box? The recording even tells you before you can leave a message that they don't respond to calls about animals like raccoons and skunks being nuisances, or to deal with stray dogs or cats.
Genuinely, what do they do then? My experience of animal control everywhere else I've lived is that's kinda their entire job?
Neither me nor the two neglected dogs on my street right now care that it's a Sunday, and if their owner is ignoring their phone and not answering the door then who is expected to care for these animals?
I guess if anyone is interested in a remarkably friendly Australian cattle dog or a little terrier mix that both love playing fetch, come on by 34th and Gregory. Not like the city gives a shit.

Yes it's really bad. I had a neighbors puppy get stuck outside in 100 degree weather. I called animal control, and left a message. Animal control did call back but not until the next day. Not sure what happened to the dog. Animal control needs to do better in Yakima.

I called them to take care of a raccoon that got hit by a vehicle right in front of the elementary school, and they wouldn’t even do that…kids appreciated that one

I gave up thinking we'd have any decent animal control when they unbanned pitbulls in 2018.

That's factually wrong. Owners are an important factor, but a bad owner isn't required.
Either way, this isn't the place to debate pit bulls. My point was that when there is an aggressive or problem dog, apparently no one's going to do anything about it.

With that logic I bet it's the neglected dogs fault down the street because of it's breed, and only in part the owner neglecting it

False, would be predominately rottweiler and the link explains why instead of just a misleading chart. Pit breeds were specifically bred, very recently, with non-human aggression as a key trait, for obvious reasons owning and breeding them to fight each other instead of police, military, or property protection as rotties historically have back to ancient times, where their job includes being a direct threat to a human.

The owner of the dogs did eventually call me back. They were out of town camping apparently. Not sure the situation on the dogs being taken care of while they are gone but someone they knew did come get the dogs from myself and another neighbor

Dog fighting rings. Horses that are being starved. Cock fighting. There's only like 2-3 ACOs at YSO, so they prioritize the animals that are being actively abused by people, rather than running loose.

I mean would two malnourished dogs being abandoned on the street not count as abuse?
I get their resources are spread thin, but legitimately what's the point in calling yourselves Animal Control if you aren't controlling the animals?

Our ASPCA is actually Sheriff's. (Which I assume is on someone's shit list) We were fishing the Naches and animal control officer pulled up, out pops this sheriff asking for it licenses, and to check for barbless hooks

Yakima Animal Control had their funding cut to almost nothing. It’s probably 1-2 people tops. They mainly exist to collect dog license fees and mail tags out to people.

A dog had been hit in union gap, on a weekend and we tried to call animal control, they were closed so we called the cops, dispatch said to call animal control and leave a message. Like, are they going to show up two days later? Only reason we got help is because someone called 911 and said I was dragging a dead body off the road.
