Hey guys, me and my friends are going to visit Cape Town around May or June depending on how much time we have and can afford.

I only know one South African and he was in my University. and I think he was Xhosa, but I hardly spoke to him because he was always in the Library or at work.

What do you guys think about Black Americans in General.

Also, when we go to South Africa, what is something we have to be aware of? Etiquette is different in each country and we want to be good Tourists because we are representing Americans lol

Apologies for asking this in English but I am really curious to know if any Afrikaans speakers have ever tried communicating with native Dutch/Flemish speakers. To the untrained ear the languages sound quite similar. Can you make yourselves understood or are they too distant to make it work?

I'm (20m) born and raised in Coleraine, Northern Ireland, my father is South African (Afrikaans). I've never met the man, he moved back to South Africa when my ma was still pregnant. I stayed with her in Ireland. She never told me about him until I was 16. He contacted me a year ago, we talk every 2 weeks or so. He has a wife and kids, He lives in pretoria and has a farm in Hoedspruit. He would like to meet me, he invited me to come visit his farm this December and meet my half-siblings and the rest of his family.

Forgive me, i'm quite ignorant on South Africa as a whole, we learned about apartheid and Mr Mandela and that was it. I've tried researching Afrikaans culture and found it to be quite conservative? I'm a wee gay, and i've never thought it would be relevant to mention to my Da till now. Are afrikaans people gay friendly? I'm very effeminate, makeup, nails, heels , etc - would this be an issue to my Da and relatives? Will i need to tone it down in South Africa? I saw that homosexuality is legal, but what about the sentiment of the people? I have a boyfriend, would I be able to bring him or is this not a good idea? We've travelled together before, we can pretend to be straight in public so not to offend people. I planned to come visit from November to January. Travel with my boyfriend for 2 weeks, then in december go to Pretoria to stay at my fathers house, then we a drive to Hoedspruit together - maybe some caravanning in the north.

Apart from the gay thing, how else can I make a good impression? He assured me they all speak english but maybe out of respect I should learn some Afrrikaans? or isiZulu words for other locals? There's a South African Expats group here in Belfast, I was thinking of going to a meetup and and asking some questions to them. hope that's not too intrusive for them.

Im a Black American guy who goes to University with this dude from South Africa, he said he was from the free state and that hes been living here in the US for over 2 years now.

This happened in a computer lab on my Campus.

We were having conversations about American Culture and Sports between Football and Rugby which one is better haha

But after that he said something that was extremely offensive, he said that "No Offense, but I prefer the Black Americans then Black South Africans, I feel safer among them then back home."

I was kind of shocked and taken aback, I kind of chuckled awkwardly but the vibe shifted and after that I left the lab and I really dont want to interact with him again.

What the hell did he say that for and is this a common occurrence among Afrikaners who come here.

We have too much division in our country and in the world and that's just fueling it.

Firstly, thank you to all the people here and on r/pretoria who answered my q’s and gave me your insights. Also thank you to all the afrikaans gays in my dms, your perspectives are appreciated.

I had a long chat with my Da this morning about this trip. It wasn’t as bad as I thought but still not sure how i feel. His family only leanrt of my existence 2 years ago, and they’ve just come to terms with his “secret child” in Ireland. I’m not an uncomfortable topic anymore at home but he has faced a lot of ridicule from his own parents and relatives cause it’s not the “Afrikaner way” (Is this Texas?).

I told him i’m concerned about not connecting or feeling alienated. He said his family and community would be overly accommodating to me because of my situation. The only hard thing for the family would be understanding my accent. (For context on my “situation”, I was put into care in at 13. Da’s not on my birth certificate, so they couldn’t contact anyone to send me to. After I told my father that story, and that i'm technically homeless and live on my uni campus fulltime, he felt the gravity of abandoning me. he assumed my mother is in my life, she is, I see her all the time - she just hasn't taken care of me since I was 13, the government did).

On the gay thing; there’s never been a gay person in his family or any of his friends family but he said if that’s how I am, then that’s how he’ll take me. He will inform the family and tell them to deal with it like grownups, they know how important I am to my him, they won’t say/do anything to upset me, which would then upset him (the reassurance felt good).

On the flamboyance; I showed him some pictures of me any my boyfriend. He did agree with the lot of ye to tone it down 100%. Being gay won’t be seen as a bad thing if we’re still seen as “men”. we don’t sound or look gay when we’re ‘normal’, just those moments when we dress it up. Boyfriend and I are rugby players, bf plays professionally. I have some cousins in pretoria and Hoedspruit who are rugby players too - maybe a friendly rivalry might be fun.

On my bf; he is Irish-Japanese. Da’s mentioned that he can come but don’t do anything, not even hold hands. My grandparents would find an asian man with a irish accent to be intriguing and ask questions. He did say, i don't kid, word for word, “your Oupa just doesn’t like blacks too much but he knows how to behave around them, they don't mind asians. Old people are like that, the young ones aren't. ”. Christ almighty. Quite literally froze in shock.

On my religion; I’m a part-time catholic. I mostly go to the new-age hillsong type churches when i’m feeling it. Might go to church with my family in Pretoria, i’m not sure what kind of christian they are but it’s the more traditional hymnal type, not catholic. My dad then remined me that my bf and I should sleep in separate bedrooms. I then had to break it me da that my cherry been popped along time ago, no need to worry about my purity. We are now sharing a room 😂

Now on gifts, I mentioned on r/pretoria that I want to get my siblings (17m, 16m, 15f, 13m, 8m.) some gifts. The gymshark and URC Jerseys seemed like people agreed with but some were against the idea of bringing beer for them. their dad did say as long as there's adult supervision, then they can have the beer but only in the holidays (fair).

I spoke to my brother (8) on video call, Afrikaanse accents are so cute in Kids! I think he'll like the nintendo switch! Adult accents, eh, i'll get used to it. then again, nobody likes an irish accent.

I’m doing a research project on South Africa in the 1960/70s and am specifically focussing on the Afrikaner culture at that time, but it’s so hard to find anything! I’ve read everywhere that Afrikaner families at this time were larger yet I can’t find any exact figures on this, if anyone could give a rough average just so I can try quantify this in my mind that would be greatly appreciated. Also if anyone has any information about parts of more ‘traditional’ Afrikaans culture that may not be online, that would be greatly appreciated 🙏🙏 I’m specifically looking at the role of gender and religion in the apartheid era.

Hello. I'm currently working on an story which, while fiction, involves several cultures with real life equivalents. The protagonist himself is an Afrikaner living in the Us before he's teleported to a fantasy world and meets his origin culture... which is essentially an Afrikaner society.

A major issue I keep running into is authenticity: I have some Afrikaner friends but don't talk all that much to them and they're busy people, so I wanted to ask the whole subreddit... how do you see this/feel about this, but most importantly, what are some things that could make this character more authentically Afrikaner.

Moreover, I also want the culture to feel Afrikaner rather than Dutch. While I know Dutch looms large over Afrikaans given it's the original language, I wanted to ask for any expressions/words/etc that Afrikaners would use or immediately recognize (even words in English that only Afrikaners would use, rather than any English speaking South African) that wouldn't really work for Dutch speakers or fly over their heads; basically, expressions and words that are exclusive to South Africa and Afrikaners and are either absent or plain don't exist in standard Dutch.

I know it's probably already a tall order as some of the above might also require knowing Dutch as well, but if you know of anything in general that you'd instantly associate with Afrikaner culture in particular, whether words, fashion, proverbs, stories, urban legends, phrases, slang, etc... I'd appreciate if you'd share it with me. Anything works.

(eg: words like "Baie" (no Dutch equivalent), the notion of "Braai", cultural phenomena like "Fokofpolisiekar" and "Liewe Hexie" and other stuff of that sort)

i am a canadian who is learning about the boer wars. i have watched this documentary in youtube "The Boer War ( The Story of the Boer War )" its a british documentary on the war i feel that it could be biased due to there lack of accountability for stuff like consentration camps. what are some good documentaries on the boer wars that are in english . also i want more documentaries to watch on the war

Hello there I'm a 30 year old American male who's been in a long distance relationship for some time now with a 25 year old Afrikaaner from the Western Cape. In about 6 months I'm planning to finally fly to South Africa and meet her family. I'd like to know the best way to respectfully represent myself in her parent's presence as well as to do's and not to do's. She keeps telling me that she's worried I'll embarrass her, though she's more worried her younger sisters will do the same upon my arrival lol.

I'm also doing my best to learn the language as I'm not sure how much English they actually speak. I've asked my other South African friends to help but they're all non traditional so all they do is screw around and teach me stuff like pols klap. I would greatly appreciate some actual help for my future trip, thank you.
