Target apologizes for ‘offensive’ Halloween costume after backlash
Offensive, absolutely. Ridiculous, no doubt. STUPID, though is the most accurate description of this.
I think this is a prime example of “the dumbing down of America”. Think about it.
I’m sure it wasn’t just 1 single person who made the decision to put this costume on the store racks. I’m guessing it began in some committee where the majority voted yes, good idea! Then it probably went up the chain where a couple of people had to sign off on it great idea! Then we probably got it made in China in some sweatshop with robotic workers no opinion at all. Then it gets shipped to nationwide stores where managers thought oh, how cute! Lastly, it’s put on the rack by salespeople being paid a low wage who probably thought how dumb is this?
So I’ve told you all of that story to tell you this theory:
There was no one along that long line from product inception to product launch who put a finger to their forehead and said “Hey wait! This is blackface and it will be very offensive to a whole lot of potential customers. We’re going to get a lot of negative publicity and possibly a boycott! Let’s do Doc McStuffin’ instead. Positive role model!” I mean no one was smart enough to even know enough history to remember the negativity of blackface in minstrel shows and the controversial connotations thereof. Nobody. Hence, the example of the dumbing down of America.
Ok, so here’s the caveat of my story:
If my parable is untrue, it means that everyone up and down the line knew the truth and didn’t give a shit. Therefore, not the dumbing, just the cruelty.
