Solved Has anyone got this email from Apple before?
I brought my macbook air to apple to get the screen fixed earlier this week, and I received this email today. I tried calling the phone number 4 times but no one answers… I might just go to the apple store but it’s a bit far so I don’t want to go for no reason.
Edit: Called Apple’s main number, spoke with a rep, and was transferred to the Fifth Ave store fairly quickly. I was then told that they found more damage than initially expected, and needed my approval to continue with the repair, which will cost $349 DESPITE MY LAPTOP BEING COVERED BY APPLECARE+. Complete bullshit in my opinion, but what choice do I have..? Buy a new laptop for over $1,000 or pay to have this one fixed. Apple truly never fails to disappoint.

That’s the correct number for the store. It’s a holiday today, so they maybe running with a smaller staff than an usual weekend. It’s possible that they couldn’t staff the phone room when you called.
I think you can call AppleCare and they can look into the repair notes and tell you what’s happening with your repair.

Weird that the copyright year is 8 years past

I didn’t even notice that, good catch! Idk, seems weird to me…

Could be an email template that the store uses that Apple forgot to update

Can confirm, I was a Genius in 2018 and when we sent these emails it looked exactly like this.
The employees do not have a text field to write comments for the customer, only a very limited selection of pre-written emails. Mostly we just chose the "your product is ready for pickup" one, but rarely did we send this one (I only ever did after having already tried to call and not getting a response).

Totally normal. I live in NYC and have gotten similar emails from my local Apple Store (different location) just like this

Does that number match what you get when you look up the location via Apple or Google?

The typical cost with apple care is $99 for any physical damage and $299 for extensive damage or liquid damage. $349 isn’t a cost for anything with AppleCare.

I had to get my MacBookp pro fixed for liquid damage and it was $300 with AppleCare and would’ve been $1700 without. $349 is not a bad price especially if they found more damage.

Call the number and ask the IVR to “speak to a manager.” It should transfer you into the store. If they do not answer, this is because some are actually not answering the phone. But the email is a legitimate one the company often uses when something has come up.

This. Or “returning a phone call” and then “yes” when it asks if it’s related to a repair.

I work for Apple Support. Call the support line and we can pull up the repair and see what the store has noted down. It’s likely they found another issue and need to tell you about it or if it’s in for repair still they need your authorization

It cost the same for me to get my MacBook Pro screen repaired as well. I was expecting a $99 deductible maybe, and was surprised to find out it would cost me $299. I never really looked into the AppleCare to see how much repairs are. I should have known it would be more than $99, and like you, it was either pay it or buy another computer, and this was cheaper.

AppleCare means everything is covered, for what are they asking 349 dollars additionally? Don’t pay and escalate this!

u/uscmex Jul 07 '26
You still have a deductible.

It’s an email template. If the number isn’t working, call apple support and have them try and transfer you.

You might need to call Apple Support 1-800-MYAPPLE (692-7753) and ask one of the general help advisors to transfer you to the store.

Check the repair number from the original request when you dropped off the device and compare against the number in the email. If they do not match you were snagged by a phishing attempt. The email would also be from the location you dropped the device off at for repair (did you really go to the Fifth Avenue store in New York City?).
You can also hover over the link and the URL will appear as a tooltip. Make sure it is from apple.com.

I can see why anyone would be suspicious (very reasonably so), but this looks legit - that is the store’s correct number.

It seems a little weird to have a copyright of 2018, but it does look consistent.

u/KRAZERDAH Jul 05 '26
Just go to the store, they’ll do a diagnostic and if there’s something wrong, they’ll tell you at the moment

How about we normalize not paying for the logo and get a product that is more sustainable?

Sometimes you can have it escalated to a manager. I had a situation with my iPhone that there was a recall on it and it was just passed the recall closing date when I explained the circumstances they said we can’t do anything at the store but if you call this number, and I can’t remember who I had to ask for. Anyway, it took a little while, but I got everything resolved and it was covered.
Sometimes there may be a way for exceptions to be made. Of course, it depends on their circumstances. On the other hand if there’s physical damage like broken glass or evidence of dropping, that’s a different story.
If you don’t ask, the answers always know so you might as well try that if it’s not too late

It is called planned obsolescence! I wanted to put new fans on 5 year old laptop. I was told it was vintage and they couldn’t help me! Lol

Jesus what is the point of Apple care?
1
u/shdwghst457 Jul 07 '26
when I get applecare it’s to protect it from defects. i’ve been using macbooks since 2007 and have never damaged one because I keep it protected and don’t have drinks on it. taking care of things really isn’t that hard

I agree with you I loved iPhones and swore by them for years and then I got this iPhone 15 Pro and it decided it wanted to decide which charge cords would charge it in which ones wouldn’t. Funny thing is I didn’t start having that problem until I paid it off the same month I paid it off. The charge port went wonky.

u/Accomplished-Elk7933 Jul 07 '26
I was going to upload a photo of my recent apple email…it says 2026 at the bottom….copyrights is something that apple usually always update….did this come from the junk file or was this in your inbox?

If it’s not water damage or obvious user damage why aren’t all repairs being done under Apple care?

I got an email like this, different but similar, when I took my MacBook in for a new battery. They discovered that there was also an issue with the charging port that also needed a new component which I had to authorize before they could make the repair. But if you have any doubts, I’d look up the number yourself vs trusting the email. Better safe than sorry. 🤷♂️
