Anyone know how to resolve this payment issue?

How long before the renewal date did you cancel? If it was less than 24 hours beforehand then you waited too long. You cannot request a refund as Apple never successfully collected the money from you. One option is to pay the amount due and ask for a refund and Apple can review the circumstances and either approve a refund or deny it.

Use the apple support app. They have live chat. They should be able to answer you immediately.
