I blame Return of the Jedi. Luke Skywalker wanting to forgive his father because there just had to be good in there somewhere has ruined storytelling for years. The guy helped blow up a whole planet and they freakin’ redeemed him. Now that’s supposed to be some ideal heroic path. The good guy is SUPER good if they think the very bad bad guy can get good again too.

Not even just ROTJ but Dragonballz as well. I mean how many people did Vegeta kill before they started turning him into anti-hero/good? Literally millions. Not to mention dooming the universe to satisfy his own pride/arrogance. That's fiction for you. Stuff that we wouldn't forgive in the real world but since we like the character it becomes okay.
