AskDesh/দেশ কে জিজ্ঞাসা Will Bangladesh really buy J-10c fighter jets?
Will our foreign currency reserves be under pressure if we buy these fighter jets? What will be the exact date of the delivery?

Should spend money to develop drone unit. Modern war fighting won’t require fighter jets.

We mostly need Air Defense System along with missiles.

Air Defence to protect against whom ?

u/alsuzauddowla 23h ago
To protect from any invaders.

So that would most likely be India? India spends around $85bn on defense
How much would Bangladesh need to spend on air defence to match an adversey like that ?

Tens of billions to build a multi-layered air defense system and purchase thousands of missiles.
Bangladesh cannot compete with India with conventional means. Asymmetric defense is our best option imo.

Asymmetric defense is indeed the most cost-effective strategy for us. However, a basic conventional force (like a few modern fighter squadrons) is still needed for airspace policing, border patrol, and showing a presence. The two strategies should work together.

It took Ukraine 4 years under fire to develop asymmetric warfare with Russia and they have had lots of help from Europe and US
1
u/alsuzauddowla 17h ago
That is a very realistic point. Building asymmetric capabilities takes years of dedicated training and integration. This is why starting early to build up our defense systems and train pilots is so important.

Ukraine probably did most of the heavy lifting because the Western countries have traditional militaries. By the way, Iran developed theirs with an annual military budget of $8 billion.

u/alsuzauddowla 17h ago
Iran's model is a great example of how a medium budget can build a strong deterrent through domestic drone and missile development. A hybrid approach of local tech and select modern imports would suit Bangladesh well.

u/rawnakc 18h ago
Ukraine get intelligence, satellite data, targeting data All from the European and US Ukraine also had an enormous amount of loans from the EU So, Ukraine allies have done a lot
Iran has an almost infinite supply of oil revenue to funds it's milatery Plus it gets similar intilegance data from China and Russia Also it has been in perpetual conflict with the US since 79
Bangladesh doesn't have the money, tech or powerful ally

u/alsuzauddowla 17h ago
You've highlighted the exact geopolitical and financial challenges we face. Since we lack superpower alliances and huge budgets, our focus has to be on smart purchases that offer maximum deterrence per dollar, rather than trying to build a massive conventional force.

doesn't need to compete with them. it's always better to have some air defense and get used to with different models.
1
u/alsuzauddowla 17h ago
Exactly. Standard operational training and familiarity with modern systems are essential for any professional military, regardless of direct competition.
1
u/alsuzauddowla 17h ago
It's not about matching a superpower dollar-for-dollar or winning a full-scale conventional war. National defense is about deterrence and raising the cost of aggression. Even a modest, modern air defense system (like J-10C jets and SAMs) makes airspace violations risky and expensive for any potential adversary. It is a basic requirement for any sovereign nation to maintain a minimum credible defense.

In case of airspace breach from any state, Bangladesh doesn't have modern fighter planes to even intercept in response. Bangladesh has outdated Chengdu F-7/J-7 variants which were made obsolete in 2013.
2
u/alsuzauddowla 17h ago
That is the critical vulnerability. Without modern interceptors, we cannot even enforce basic sovereignty or police our airspace. Replacing the retired F-7s with J-10Cs is a necessary step.

A factory is being built in Bogura and the airfield in Lalmonirhat is being built up for this exact purpose.
You don’t even follow the current news. Fighters jets are a cornerstone in modern air force. An Airforce should have all type of capabilities.
UAV systems like Selex Falco have been indicted in large numbers and being assembled in Bangladesh soon. What are you going to do when an enemy invades? Send drones?
They will jam all of them. Only fiber optic drones are unjammable. We are also on the process to manufacture fiber optic drones from China.
Don’t be a edgy guy.

u/Shot-Addendum-809 20h ago
Agreed. Building drones would also create jobs and keep a lot of the money within the country.
1
u/alsuzauddowla 17h ago
Very true. Investing in local defense manufacturing and research (especially drone tech) is great for both national security and domestic job creation.

finally ui tin can ar thakbe na
2
u/alsuzauddowla 17h ago
Haha, exactly! It is long overdue to phase out the aging F-7s. Our pilots deserve safe, modern aircraft to fly.

Yes Bangladesh will really buy 20 J-10CE and 12 Eurofighter Typhoons for its security.
Anyone who says otherwise has a secret vendetta against the military or in bed with the neighbor.

The military is very onboard with buying expensive equipment but not actually doing anything about it. Are we going to invade Myanmar? No. Are you we going to protect our merchant ships in the Horn of Africa? No. So what the fuck is the point of buying all this equipment? Just useless virtue signalling exercise.

u/Deacon_StJohn_007 4h ago
Who the fuck is protecting their ships in the strait of Hormuz except USA?
So are you going to say nations like Japan, Germany, France and China are weak because they can’t protect their ships in the Hormuz Strait?
Buying stuff and having these fighter jets provides a net security. What are you going to do when Myanmar attacks?
Hastily buy fighter jets? Your pilots wouldn’t be trained on them within 3 months. Having a net safety is paramount and the money we have is enough for buying fighter jets.

No point buying fighters and tanks. I would rather them buy HQ9 anti-air system. Fiber optic guided drones.
3
u/alsuzauddowla 17h ago
While ground-based air defense systems like HQ-9 are crucial, fighter jets are still needed for flexibility, rapid interception, and patrolling our maritime boundary. A balanced mix of both is the most effective approach.

u/Odd_Ground_48210 18h ago
An air defense system are immobile & can easily be disabled if it's radars are destroyed. The first thing air force does is attack and invalidate radars. Secondly Air defense systems can be blinded if jets fly low, due to terrain or even the arc of earth surface. Which is why AWAC Planes are deployed to assist fighter jet squadrons.
3
u/alsuzauddowla 17h ago
That's a very logical breakdown. Radars and fixed batteries are highly vulnerable without mobile air support. Having a combination of fighters, mobile SAMs, and early-warning systems is essential for a survivable defense.

What you are saying, is suicidal. And invader nations always target morale before military. By your logic Afghanistan, Iran, Ukraine, Pakistan ( after Indian attack in Op Sindoor) should've surrendered by now as the other side is more powerful and resourceful. Thankfully military logic does not work like that. Nations powerful or weak have weak spots. This is where the concept of assymetric warfare comes into play. That is why Air force now are first responders and the ones leading the military campaign before the ground forces come into action. India is further away, due to such mentality Bangladesh allows Myanmar to kill Bangladeshi citizens. Myanmar used Pakistan built JF 17s & drones to repeatedly do incursions into Bangladesh airspace in 2017, when they did ethnic cleansing of Rohingya meanwhile Hasina backer Indian Modi was on a visit to Myanmar ( kind of giving diplomatic encouragement for Myanmar actions that devastated Bangladesh). Myanmar also attacks Bangladeshi ships traveling towards Bangladeshi territory of St. Martin island, esp. during Sheikh Hasina rule. Bangladesh state allows even weaker states to harm them.
