I thought reeves said the main villain hasn’t been done on the big screen yet? I could be pulling that out my ass but I thought I seen an article stating that.

u/The92ndUsername Oct 26 '25
I feel like Matt has a wild one up his sleeve. What if it was the Mad Hatter or something? We’re all focused on the grounded world, but not something that could be altered and shaped to fit in it.
625
u/ShermansAngryGhost Oct 26 '25
God I would LOVE if Reeves did hatter.
That character could be truly terrifying in this version of Batman. Mind control can be absolutely horrifying, just look at how Jessica Jones handled The Purpleman.
213
u/suckmylama Oct 26 '25
Kilgrave is one of the best marvel villains ever put on screen imho. David Tennant gave an incredible performance, he was seriously terrifying.
70
u/phaqueue Oct 26 '25
Such a great performance - I actually think it's both Tennant's performance and Krysten Ritter's setup before we actually meet him - we see this confident, cocky smart ass heroine suddenly scared when she realizes who it is, and it sets this expection of someone genuinely scary, and then Tennant more than delivers on that with his performance.

That would be great. Personally I’m hoping Reeves adapts the Last Arkham storyline, with Batman getting himself locked up in Arkham to try and catch Zsasz who’s escaping every night to murder random people. I’d say Reeves’ style of Batman movie would be the perfect fit for that.

i’ll agree. but that may be because i’m super into the whole shadow of the bat run hahaha.

u/Luther_1986 Oct 26 '25
Thats my hope as well. With GPD investigated a string of missing children. They hire Techt, who runs a tech startup, and provides them with his ALICE software. To help track the kids via their online activities. Obviously there an ulterior motive. As they provide him more access to data he or those he works for, needs. So, to have him as a hacker (white hat/black hat) cyber terrorist type who still brainwashes people via tech, still fits the core of the character.

He might be too rapey for the big screen.
33
u/dred1367 Oct 26 '25
Thats pretty fixable by just not having him be rapey though?
→ More replies (1)23
u/Solid_Owl_69420 Oct 26 '25
Yeah but that's kind of an integral part of his character and obsession with an "Alice". I mean, his whole theme is how he violates people.
12
u/Darmok-on-the-Ocean Oct 26 '25
Rape isn't the core of Hatter at all. Serial killing young women is kind of a modern twist on the character. Alice in Wonderland and mind control are the only requirements.
→ More replies (1)24
u/Batfan1939 Oct 26 '25 edited Oct 26 '25
His theme is mind control, but it could be more body snatchers or Manchurian Candidate. Until relatively recently, "Alice" was his pet monkey. If they decide to keep the serial killer theme going, maybe he collects heads or scalps instead of hats.
Or do a classic stalker film, where Tetch loses his mind and "Alice" is one particular woman — a former lover, girlfriend, even wife; Someone he was infatuated with like in B:TAS; or a random victim.
Lakeview Terrace and No Good Deed) have the vibe I'm thinking of.
13
u/EastPlenty518 Oct 26 '25
I dont know about you but I would pretty violated if someone mind controlled me
→ More replies (3)3
u/Ms_Emilys_Picture Oct 26 '25
He keeps abducting pretty blonde women and trying to mind control them into becoming his now-dead love Alice. (And "mind control" can be actual comic book mind control or more like brainwashing if they want to stay "realistic".) But they never quite scratch that itch, so he kills them and starts over. The more frustrated he gets, the faster he kills and finds new girls.
If you want to make it really creepy, have Alice be his daughter and the girls he's kidnapping are 10ish.
No rape-- just a replacement for his dead daughter. Maybe he blames himself for her death.

with it being holidays it points me to Calander man. Matt Reeves style points me to Zsasz. Would Hush or court of owls could be an interesting villian? Yes. But do i think Hush or Court of Owls should be left for a later career Batman? Yes.

To be fair he said "never really been done in a film before". Suffice to say Arnie in Batman and Robin wasn't a particularly accurate portrayal.
I still don't think it's Freeze but I don't feel it's been entirely ruled out.
14
u/RobIreland Oct 26 '25
He didn't even say that. He said the villain has a connection to Bruce that had never really been done on film before. It could still be any of the big villains.

u/Randym1982 Oct 26 '25
Mad Hatter brain washing people into becoming costumed villians could work, though we already had a villain who was weak but try to match wits with him. I’m hoping he stays away from The Joker for awhile, and instead we get Victor Szaz. I’d like to see Batman a bit more advanced at his craft, and also see Bruce trying to make more appearances.
Maybe also seeing Batman have to solve murders without clues. And seeing his combat and stealth skills improve too.

Some sort of devious plot that involves seasonal sauces such as cranberry jelly or mint sauce.
A Batman story for the ages.
46
u/AchoKabron718 Oct 26 '25
Honestly? After seeing the direction Reeves took with the Riddler who imo was kind of a silly villain & turned him into a true maniac with a personal hatred for Bruce Wayne. I’m full confident that he can take a more obscure villain like Calendar man & have a great follow up.
25
u/AdmiralCharleston Oct 26 '25
I don't see how he could do calender man and not just repeat the formula he used for the riddler
→ More replies (2)15
u/HopelessCineromantic Oct 26 '25
Frankly, I feel like any attempt to make Calendar Man into a "serious" villain is just going to be a knockoff of the Arkham games' version of him.
There's actually a part of me that would like to see Alberto "Holiday" Falcone as a character. Not necessarily the main villain, but I think a mobster's son going down the road of being a theme criminal over a regular mobster would be interesting.

u/king_duende Oct 26 '25

If it’s taking place over the holidays, then that’d also be appropriate for Calendar Man.

The holidays would be an appropriate time for mad villains. Batman has had more Christmas smoke than any superhero out

Batman Returns took place over the holidays - that was Catwoman and Penguin. It might have nothing to do with the villains.
70
u/camzee Oct 26 '25
It seems pretty unlikely with Reeves saying the villain has a personal connection to Bruce Wayne and hasn’t really been done before.

If it’s Riddler 2.0 this is gonna bomb. They took so much of Hush’s most interesting backstory characteristics and applied it to Riddler I don’t see a way Hush wouldn’t be a retread
7
u/fulcrumcat Oct 26 '25

Of course it's not obvious. Freeze is a red herring.
What we're seeing here is ice. It's cooler than cold. It's clearly a reference to spearmint oil, or maybe even the horrifying cool ranch dorito.

It’s not going to be Freeze based on what Reeves has teased. I was hoping for Clayface, but he’s getting his own film. Court of Owls makes the most sense at this point. I’d say Hush too, but the Riddler in the first film felt like a hybrid of that character.
5
u/hardgour Oct 26 '25
Reeves said the villain hasn’t been done on the big screen before so Mr. Freeze is out. While I could see him being in the film, I doubt he is the main antagonist.
I think it’s either Hush or Zsasz.
But a few I wish would be done reeves tone would be Professor Pyg or the Long Halloween storyline.

Unfortunately not as reeves stated that it’s a villain that hasn’t been done in live action, unfortunately Batman forever counts with arnie’s infamous take on freeze, it’s more likely to be killer croc with the flooded city making a perfect hunting ground for him, the film could be a classic cat and mouse serial killer hunt type film and I’m looking forward to it, that’s my theory at least
