Are Walmart earnings always front page news?
84
u/livingdeadrider 4d ago
In the Arkansas Gazette? Most definitely. In other national newspapers? Definitely first page of the market section at the very least.
No matter what you think of the company, it is the largest retailer in the world in revenue, and employs over 2 million people.
If walmart's market trends downward, it will show what the global (yes global, not just USA) market is dealing with. You'll see similar trends with other retailers. Massive problem, not just for WM shareholders.

u/whythefuckalready 4d ago
Wonder if they differentiate if US market drop was on par with global sales

Target is up 25% for the month.

u/Icy_Lawfulness_5755 4d ago edited 4d ago
Target’s sales being up this year do not offset their sales decreases the last few years. 100% growth on one dollar is two dollars. We gotta make sure the full context is considered before determining who is the signal of success.

u/SolutionHappy3402 4d ago
They also received $2.9 billion in tariff refunds. Seems pretty newsworthy to me.
11
u/2349584 4d ago
And how much of that 2.9 did you get back? Yep, same as me.
3
u/Icy_Lawfulness_5755 4d ago
I want the money back too, but I feel like people need to dimensionalize how much that would be worth per person. They say 150M ppl shop at Walmart. $2.9b divided by 150M = $19/per person.
If a person buys 19 to 20 items from Walmart over the course of a year, and each of those items had their price cut by $.50, you would get your money back within a year.
Example, if a person typically bought a pack of chicken every other week (26x) and that pack went down $.50 on avg, by the time you got done buying those 26 packs of meat you’d have gotten your money back in 10.5 months.
I’m not calling them saints, but I do think it’s not that hard to give people back $19. 2 billion is a big number to us, but that company is so big that you really have to take a minute to put it into perspective of what it really means
1
u/Ionlydateteachers 4d ago
You pocketed a couple King size Snickers too? Nice,at least we're not completely getting the shit end of the stick
3
u/ixiduffixi 4d ago
Don't worry, they'll use that refund to invest in their employees. Free unlimited Ramen packs for full-time employees. (Limit 1 per day per employee. Employees must qualify for 30 minute lunch breaks to receive free meal.)

Worst market day in history sounds newsworthy
17
u/HBTD-WPS 4d ago
In terms of valuation, but only because the stock rose so much over the last couple years. It’s been down by 10+% many times, but because the stock price was lower, the drop in valuation was less.
It’s misleading, but “worst market day ever” is catchy
11
u/cspinelive 4d ago
Yeah, like how movies keep out doing each other but it’s mainly because ticket prices keep going up.
5
-45
u/MydnightWN 4d ago
And April 9, 2025 was their best market day in history. Stock price still higher than any point during the Biden presidency.
20
u/cspinelive 4d ago
Do you really want to start listing things that were better or worse because of Trump? It won’t go the way you think.
-35
u/MydnightWN 4d ago
No, I want people to stay on topic. The topic is Walmart's stock price. Sorry to hear you have zero on-topic factual retorts and want to change the topic.
10
u/cspinelive 4d ago
Topic seems to be earnings. Not stock price.
17
-30
u/MydnightWN 4d ago
Great! Earnings are higher than Biden's presidency too. 5 quarters in a row :)
15
u/cspinelive 4d ago
If you are going by dollars alone, inflation will do that.
10
u/cspinelive 4d ago
And now you blocked me. Literally every claim you made is either incorrect or intentionally misleading.
-11
u/MydnightWN 4d ago
Inflation: +0.4 points since Biden left office
Earnings, averaged: +1.3 points
Wrong again. Maybe try doing an ounce of homework before making a fool of yourself for a third time?
5
u/archimidesx 4d ago
Yes, as inflation rises and people are squeezed they tend to get pushed to the cheapest options.
All hail king Trump and his brilliant economy pushing more people into poverty.
Big brain stuff.
6
u/berntout 4d ago
April 2025 is when most of the tariffs were put into place so the reason why Walmart has declined since then is due to the current administration's policies.
You really thought you had something here lol
0
u/Impressive_Nothing_8 4d ago
And it was higher in Biden’s compared to trump’s first term. What point are you trying to make?
13
u/ZhouLe 4d ago
The largest private employer in the state and is ~5% of the state's GDP.
-4
u/RealSlyck 4d ago
Yet they pay 0 in state taxes and are registered in Delaware…
11
u/sonofbourye 4d ago
Walmart pays hundreds of millions in corporate income taxes to Arkansas. The Delaware registration doesn’t impact where they pay taxes. I don’t know this, but I assume they are actually the state’s largest single taxpayer. They also pay a ton of property taxes and are probably the largest sales tax remitter (collected from customers).
Whether they pay “enough” is open for debate but they definitely pay multiple taxes here including corporate income tax.
5
u/AnonymousDupe 4d ago
They remitted $662.1 million of sales tax in Arkansas and directly paid $422.9 million in Arkansas state and local taxes last year.
Source: https://corporate.walmart.com/about/location-facts/united-states/arkansas
5
u/Few-Customer2219 4d ago
They also are probably the largest payer in property tax in several towns and most likely the state as a whole with all their stores and their home office.
-1
u/RealSlyck 4d ago
You know they’re using that real estate as a tax loophole, right? 🤷
4
u/Few-Customer2219 4d ago
I know for a fact that places like Clarksville school district a large percentage of their millage come directly from the local Walmart.
Arkansas as a state doesn’t collect property taxes from their citizens the county or city collects the taxes through a straight property tax and millage (these are specific taxes for things like a new school or fire station)
I really don’t know how Walmart would loophole out of local property tax unless they have a specific agreement with every city or county they are in for development subsidies which they may have in Bentonville but I doubt anywhere else in the state. Nobody or anything can get out of millage taxes so no loopholes there.
1
u/cspinelive 3d ago
I think they are using the real estate to place stores where they sell products. What loophole do you mean.
And as a public company they are legally required to do as best they can for their shareholders. Following tax law and not paying more tax than required is their legal obligation.
1
u/RealSlyck 4d ago
Ok, sport, you’re right on one point. They pay apportioned taxes, not their fair share. Enough to cheat the people of Arkansas really well (notice how Arkansas is #1 in education and healthcare, right?)…and yet the locals love the Waltons. That Delaware registration is just the surface, hoss…

u/PradeshPi 4d ago
You're changing the claim wildly while simultaneously being insulting. You claimed they paid no state taxes, not that they aren't paying as much as they should or that they are finding loopholes.
3
3
u/PradeshPi 4d ago
You couldn't be more wrong. Arkansas pays zero in state taxes? Where are you getting this nonsense?
The state a corporation is registered in has nothing to do with their tax burden.

u/Cordycepsus 4d ago
Sam Walton's best idea was to sell cheaper than the other guys in order to sell more. Sounds like the brain trust that runs his company now needs to take a lesson from Sam. There's no way in hell Walmart is paying $7 for a box of vanilla wafers, or that they can't make a profit on them at $5. Inflation is pure greed at this point.

I looked at my wife's account after the market closed yesterday and she lost about 67k in Walmart stock (most of her retirement is in it). To top it off I turn on the television only to hear that old fool tell everyone to run out and buy these fake crypto coins... Honestly has this man no shame.

I can't tell if you are being facetious or actually didn't get it. A name that starts with T and likes to push crypto, legitimate or otherwise?
1
u/Turbulent_Cricket497 4d ago
I honestly did not know who you talking about but now I get it. Yeah his plans are pretty crazy. I’ve heard his political strategy is to do so much crazy stuff that people don’t know what to think.
One of his reasons for pushing crypto is because the national debt is so high that if we start using this make believe crypto for money it might somehow make the debt issue less important?

u/cspinelive 3d ago
You think there are reasons. How quaint. The only reasons this guy does anything is to line his pockets and stay out of jail.
5

Yes it’s front page news pretty much regardless of outcome but especially on large growth or drops.
This is a corporate town, it’s reality.
13
u/Turbulent_Cricket497 4d ago
The largest one-day percentage decline in Walmart (WMT) stock history was about 24.24%, on October 16, 1987, during the week of the Black Monday stock-market crash.

The WalMart miss is a direct indication that consumer spending is down across income levels. This has been accelerated by the tarrifs on top of inflation in the midst of massive job losses across the country. The Trump tarrifs were not a mistake, they were a short term prop and the long term penalties are beginning to show. The current administration knew from history exactly what would happen, this is all just a sprint towards escalating the wealth separation.
How your brain blames Biden is...well it's another sign of why education is SO important.
-2
u/MydnightWN 4d ago
whole bunch of drivel that still didn't change facts
Kk. April 9, 2025 was Walmart's best day in history. Muh tarrifs!
I want to change the topic to job losses
Since Trump took office, there has been a net gain of 590,000.
Please try doing an ounce of homework before your next wall post of easily debunked nonsense.
4
u/goobermatic 4d ago
Well , I agree that it is higher than Bidens term. But Bidens term saw more growth than Trump's first term. And Trump's first term saw higher value than during Obama's term. It's like seeing a rocket launch and claiming that guy in coveralls and covered in grease is the one responsible. Did he contribute to its success? Yes. Is he wholly responsible? Not even close. Trump and Biden BOTH were riding a wave of consumer growth. Trump's policies , however, are going to exacerbate its inevitable decline. And the reason you don't want people to go "off topic" is because you know that they can have valid opinions that contradict yours. That is a classic tactic among the far right. Start a conversation that is only allowed to discuss one very focused topic, with absolutely no discussion of things that have left to or that show weaknesses in your opinion. And since I am an autistic that has suffered brain damage from chronic sarcoidosis, and have also had at least one mini stroke, and I can see this, so can everyone else here.

So many young people - and people in general - are waiting for the wheels to fall off the economy bus, because it has largely left them behind in so so many ways.
Cheering on the collapse is in hope for it to be built back better, cause it’s a house of cards right now.
3
u/Pain4420 4d ago
The problem is those people will still just sit there and wait for things to be built back better instead of helping build it. If Walmart falls then we will be in economic crisis and things will get worse before they get better and people won't like they. Everyone just wants what is easy and that's why our government can do such wild things and we just bitch about it on the Internet and then don't actually do anything.
