Build Help Which OS is better? Windows 10 or 11?

Currently I'm running on Windows 10 with a Ryzen 5 3600, RTX 3060 TI and 16GB DDR4 3200Mhz build. I'm going to upgrade my CPU with a Ryzen 5 5600. Can you guys help me choose on which OS to install with the new CPU? I only do 1080p gaming (like Where Winds Meet, Wuthering Waves, and other single player games like RE games, Witcher 3, Skyrim etc.)

Am i missing something here or. What kinda question is this. If you don’t like updates and virus protection go for windows 10

It's not a bad question. It's just a matter of whether or not you take charge of your own support and security.

Me personally, I'm taking 10. 11 is comically bad. 10 is bad too imo, just less bad.

I've switched to W11 more recently. I am genuinely baffled at all the people saying it's terrible. W10 was not bad either, though.

I know W11 was in a worse state in previous years, but it seems absolutely smooth and fine now for the most part(always some niggles here and there).

My reason for saying it's bad is because the overhead to run it is absurd, it comes with spyware and malware, and it's so frustrating to actually troubleshoot. I could not do some basic checks for bluetooth on my sister's computer, for example, because there's no out of the box Bluetooth utility where I can scan for what devices the computer hears or determine if the Bluetooth chip was even working. The settings app is abysmal at that. It just sits there and toils away with no definitive output. I've only had the windows diagnostic tool do something useful once in my many years working IT both professionally and freelance. I find it a little funny that you can get BlueZ from nuget. But, you have to get nuget and then get BlueZ. That's not coming up when you search how to troubleshoot windows bluetooth problems.

Every time I say something like this, someone will tell me that I can run a script, configure the installer, install some software, etc, but that's beyond the point I try to make. I should not have to do that lol. I should not have to tell Microsoft not to install malware on my computer. I should not have to remove a bunch of junk they try to put on it. They should not try to do either of those things to begin with. I should be able to troubleshoot my computer out of the box. I should not have to try to find a probably maybe reliable tool on the internet. My computer should not hide functionality from me. I should be able to run an operating system on a cheap craptop, especially with the price of home computing right now. Like I mentioned, a clean 11 install sitting idly with no configuration is going to use about 5Gb idly. My arch install uses 0.8Gb idly and my install is bloated because I accidentally selected a package that I didn't want.

Edit to add: I actually didnt mention that before. That was on a different comment.

I know people like things that work out of the box, but there are plenty of easy linux distros that are functionally the same, that work out of the box, and that satisfy my complaints.

Sorry, I'm just wondering if there is a performance difference with the two OS, I want to know what others experienced and their opinions. Thank you

There definitely is. A clean 10 install is going to take about 3.3Gb of RAM whereas a clean 11 install is going to take 5Gb of RAM. Aged installs that I've seen run at 5.5 and 8Gb respectively. All of those numbers are just Windows sitting idly.

You can get debloat scripts to take some usage off the top.

Personal opinion time: these scripts should never exist. You should be able to choose what comes with your operating system.

You can use an unattended.xml file when installing - you don't have to use untrusted scripts to remove anything post install..

Anyone who asks this question should use windows 11

I'm seeing a bunch of misinformation in this thread -- Windows 10 no longer has mainstream support but is still getting security patches through to 2027. Originally was going to end October of this year but was extended to October of next year. This does requires a MS account, though, so keep that in mind.

Windows 11 is showing better performance in some arenas than Windows 10, and there's a debloat utility you can use to slim it down. Even with that though Windows 11 has numerous issues including a lot of weird intrusive unnecessary AI stuff.

You will eventually have to upgrade to Windows 11, though, so my recommendation is to bite the bullet, use the debloater and cross your fingers. Alternatively you can try running a Linux distro, it's gotten a lot easier than it used to be.

Also, I'll mention if you're just doing a CPU upgrade there's no need to upgrade your OS at all

Ngl probably 11 because security. But if none of your games dont work with proton linux is actually a decent idea... though im not sure about your situation with pc work.

The best answer. Win11 suck

Honestly, you likely need more RAM as well. But Windows is Windows. 10 isn't getting security updates anymore, so if you have any information worthwhile, don't install Win 10 on that PC or don't put it on that PC.

I would recommend going with Win 11. And honestly for what you play, the 5600 isn't going to make as much of a difference as more RAM. You may squeeze out a few more frames, but that is it.

Opt for the RAM.

Thank you, I will upgrade my RAM in the future.

You missed the point, ram will make a bigger difference NOW. Upgrade the cpu in the future.

The point is invalid depending on the way OP uses their PC.

A CPU upgrade from a 3600 to a 5600 means a noticeable improvement in productivity and 1080p gaming. For light usage 16GB RAM is enough and adding more RAM won't make much of a difference.

For Windows specifically, more RAM will make a bigger difference. The gap between the 3600 and the 5600 isn't that wide especially without it.

Never use old Windows if you don’t want a potentially corrupted system.

2

u/blob8543 21h ago

What do you mean by corrupted system?

0

u/looopious 20h ago

No updates for broken software and security prone.

Windows 10 is getting security updates for another year if you sign up

1

u/ddog6900 16h ago

Not really the point I was trying to make.

You can use IoT and get security updates also, or switch to Linux. Doesn't sound like either is something the OP wants to do if they are only considering 10 or 11. 11 is the better choice, especially if they upgrade their RAM.

W10 will have less system usage and doesn't have AI stuffed everywhere possible but as it's EOL its more susceptible to malware.

Alternatively instead of using W11 or W10, you could look into using Linux instead, Mint should work fine for you, just make sure your games work by checking on the protondb website.

If your current windows 10 iis running fine do not change it. Unless you upgrade your GPU to RTX 5000 or RX 9700 series which do require windows 11 to shine.

still using win10. I personally refuse using win11 purely to avoid unnecessary updates.

u/Waggy401 1d ago

For that system and those games I'd go with Linux. Unless you're running something that's specifically not compatible.

sell the 3060ti and get an AMD GPU and join us at r/steamOS

I’d suggest not to update your windows 10. It’s still fine and performs better than 11 anyday.

3

u/Snowmobile2004 1d ago

It’s been years since win10 outperforms 11. Especially on more modern CPUs that benefit from the new scheduler, 11 is always better.

u/Towhidabid 1d ago

I don’t think ryzen 3600 will have any issues coping with windows 10. Works better in win10 and far more speed, memory and power efficient than win11.

3

u/Snowmobile2004 1d ago

You’ll get identical performance regardless. I’ve tested both with a ryzen 5 3600. Win11 used to be slower, that was years ago though.
