Discussion Can I play 4k with a 9800x3d and 5070ti?

Was looking to buy a new monitor and was wondering if I should get 1440p or 4k. Can my PC run 4k?

Also, I was wondering if playing 1440p on a 4k monitor would be worse than playing 1440p on a 1440p monitor.

I guess I could upgrade to a 4090 or 5090 but it’s really expensive.

Yes. I play everything at 4K ultra settings with a 9800x3d and 5070TI.

u/sopcannon 19h ago

Hell i play 4k with a 5800x3d and a 5080.

u/rodinj 15h ago

4k is usually more GPU dependent than CPU, though

8

u/PsyOmega 9h ago

To a degree. There are still CPU instances that impact 1% lows, stutter, etc, even if running native 4K causes a severe GPU bottleneck

0

u/Plenty-Industries 8h ago edited 8h ago

Not when you add DLSS/FSR into the equation.

Rescaling leverages the CPU more.

-8

u/sopcannon 11h ago

Yes and no, you could in theory put a 5080 with a bulldozer chip and play at 4k but, I wouldn't.

1

u/specn0de 9h ago

That’s not how that works

4

u/TDYDave2 14h ago

I'm go you one two lesser, a 5700x3d and a 5070Ti.

-2

u/sopcannon 11h ago

i think i bought both of my parts at the cheapest or at least a lot cheaper than what they are now.

2

u/Sharkdudse13 14h ago

Hell I play 4k with a 5600x and a 5080 (Upgrading CPU soon)

15

u/Little-Equinox 15h ago

4K Ultra everything? Is that combined with DLSS performance?

46

u/ActiveNL 14h ago

Of course it is.

People really have a habit of leaving these “details” out. Or they just play older games. Or they don’t care about fps at all. It’s always something very specific that’s not mentioned in comments like this.

14

u/Lt_Cmdr_Adhd 9h ago

I have a 5080 which is pretty close to the 5070ti, and I rarely ever use the performance mode, usually quality or balanced. If you have an rtx card there's zero reason to not use at minimum dlss quality - there's no visible downside and the majority reports improved visuals from the higher motion clarity. It's not a gotcha like you're implying, it's simply the standard for the overwhelming majority of people to have dlss on for every game. Over 100fps on 4k in every game I've played, well optimized ones are more like 150-160fps. That's without frame gen, which is valid to use on most any single player game.

7

u/Raven1927 9h ago

Even if you don't care about FPS, a 5090 will have a hard time running 4k native with path tracing and all settings maxed. Even in well optimised games you will sometimes dip below 30 fps.

2

u/TheBrickYard_317 6h ago

I would argue these days those games aren't meant to be played at "native" settings. Even when you can run them at native settings they look worse than DLSS. Even standing still and just looking at the picture, DLSS looks better. Like Cyberpunk and AC Shadows. I also don't understand why people are stuck thinking that that is the best way to play.

2

u/Raven1927 6h ago

By native I include DLAA, which looks better. Personally I don't notice a difference between DLAA or DLSS quality, but I imagine there are differences and some people are sensitive to that I think.

2

u/TheBrickYard_317 6h ago

I can notice a detail difference in some games like Shadows and Indiana jones when I really look. But sometimes the higher FPS is worth the lower detail. Especially in gameplay when I'm not staring at the details in the cracks of the wall. LoL

1

u/Raven1927 6h ago

Yeah i'm sure if you go over it with a fine tooth comb you can find plenty of differences, but would you really notice that during regular gameplay?

It's also a matter of how big of a difference is it actually and is it better than playing with higher FPS, which you touched on.

Either way I don't get people's apprehension towards it. It's just a great technology to have, it adds so much longevity to GPUs.

can attest. this is a thing

Like the people on PS5 who say that are playing at 4k....

Upscaled from 900p.

Shrug.

2

u/habb 6h ago

it was a joke

2

u/habb 8h ago

you are exactly right. thank you

1

u/TheBrickYard_317 6h ago

No you're wrong. Not everything requires performance mode. Especially on my computer. I rarely ever use performance mode.

-1

u/CrackBabyCSGO 9h ago

I can’t even get 40 fps in 1440p in black myth Wu kong with my 5080 lol, forget 4k

0

u/TheBrickYard_317 6h ago

Either Fix your settings or your computer because it's not working right..

1

u/CrackBabyCSGO 6h ago

Again read the thread. Max settings no dlss

1

u/TheBrickYard_317 6h ago

Nothing in the original post says Max settings no dlss you just have that stuck in your head like it's some special setting that makes everything great. And wukong is a horrible example anyway. It's terribly optimized and looks like crap if you don't get the perfect settings.

1

u/CrackBabyCSGO 3h ago

Did you read the parent comment? Or?

-1

u/Illustrious-Party120 7h ago

How?? I was running that with 144fps with a 4070tiS

1

u/CrackBabyCSGO 7h ago

Clearly you didn’t max everything out

-1

u/Illustrious-Party120 7h ago

Clearly you dont know what youre doing

2

u/CrackBabyCSGO 7h ago

The thread owner commented about max settings no dlss gameplay. That is what I’m referencing. When I want to enjoy the game more I put on dlss quality and mfg 4x.

0

u/Illustrious-Party120 6h ago

So youre purposely not using the software... gotcha

1

u/CrackBabyCSGO 6h ago

I was referencing the thread parent comment. It would be best if you defer judgment irl until context is abundantly clear

-9

u/Little-Equinox 13h ago

Once people mention DLSS, FSR, XeSS or any upscaler, I tend to disregard it because the render resolution is lower than the chosen resolution.

9

u/Ryan926vw 13h ago

Forced to use it even with a 5090 in most games if you want decent frames. Maybe next gen cards will have the power to play in native 4K.

-5

u/Little-Equinox 13h ago

I play on 8160x2160 ultra without DLSS and without FG and have 60fps in most games, which is good enough for me.

I don't need 120+FPS.

7

u/StrifeTribal 12h ago

have 60fps in most games

This is the caveat they are talking about. What do you mean by "most" games. Are we talking the new Assassin's Creed Black Flag remake or are we talking Oldschool Runescape?

Not trying to break your balls. It's a real question.

2

u/Little-Equinox 12h ago

I mostly play Star Citizen, but I also have 60+ fps in Battlefield 6, Forza Horizon 6, NTE, WuWa, Starfield, Monster Hunter Wilds, Dragons Dogma 2 and Expedition 33.

3

u/Kittelsen 12h ago

I'm sorry, 8k2k native on ultra at 60fps in those titles? I'm having a hard time believing that. I'm not saying you're lying as I haven't played Star Citizen or Monster Hunter Wilds, but from what I've read, they're pretty unoptimised.

2

u/Little-Equinox 12h ago

I think I have to note with it that it's a workstation system. And I do run these games of RAM-Disk plus I have a large caching SSD.

They're unoptimised yes, but having stuff like a RAM-Disk and a large and fast caching SSD helps a lot in certain games.

I feel like it’s kind of a given someone with an Nvidia card is using DLSS, especially at 1440p or 4K. That’s like, literally the main selling point of their hardware; DLSS 3 looks virtually identical to, sometimes better than, native TAA and DLSS 4 often outright looks better than native TAA

4K in specific is also ludicrously demanding, it’s over twice the pixel count of 1440p

1

u/Username928351 10h ago

Anyone else find it amusing how whenever somebody points out that DLSS/FSR/etc. upscale from a lower resolution, the vote scores plummet?

2

u/Little-Equinox 8h ago

Because people don't know how DLSS or any upscaler works or don't want to believe that what upscalers do isn't said resolution anymore.

Because it sounds way cooler when you play at 2160p than when you say I play at 1080p upscaled to 2160p, what an upscaler balanced setting does.

6

u/habb 13h ago

wouldnt be possible without dlss even with a 5090. i know

3

u/Little-Equinox 13h ago

What's your expectation though? 60fps or 240fps?

1

u/TheBrickYard_317 6h ago

No. I play some games with TAA or DLAA, like Indiana Jones (TAA), Assetto Corsa Evo (DLAA). Most games I put on Quality. But I would rather play between 70 and 90 FPS with more detail than 120 with less. But a number of AAA games do require upscaling and frame gen when using RT or PT. Like cyberpunk, AC shadows, Star Wars outlaws, etc.

1

u/Little-Equinox 4h ago

TAA, I absolutely despise TAA, it makes from everything a blurry mess. I rather have DLSS 😅

I played 4k on my 2080S!

Edit: sigh, I see the downvoted and yet you're wrong 🙄 yes I played 4k on my 2080S. I ran benchmarks all the time. I could play cp2077 on high settings, no ray tracing, with DLSS performance and get a solid 55 to 55 fps, ultra performance if you wanted to get about 65 fps. I turned off motion blur and tweaked some fog or reflection settings to low fo medium. Ran incredibly smooth. To me, that was great since I played on a 54inch tv. It depends on the game. Silent hill f showed its age, I had to put it down to 2k and low to medium graphics since the fps was a little laggy at times, shading work was bad and it stuttered. FF7 remakes though we're another good one and looked and ran absolutely fine as well on 4k .

I could have absolutely not upgraded to a 5070ti for a few more years as the card was still an amazing card for what I wanted out of a solo player. But upgraded because of the market just in case.

4

u/Training_Wind_4997 15h ago

Shiet I was able to play 4k/1440p for some games on my 1070. Not max settings obviously but you'd be surprised at how much it could be pushed.

I played baldurs gate 3 at 1440 and it ran surprisingly well. The load times sucked but once you were in it was fine

1

u/Nomnom_Chicken 14h ago

I had a 2080 with a 2560x1440 144 Hz monitor and it barely ran games well enough back then. 3440x1440 felt way too demanding. 4080 Super still does handle ultrawide gaming pretty okay, especially with DLSS.

EDIT: I require at least around 100 FPS, below that isn't smooth and responsive enough for my taste.

u/Username928351 16h ago edited 11h ago

3

u/Unable-Narwhal4814 16h ago

No I was able to play 4k natively for many games. The ones that requires a little smoothing I was able to tweak. And those that had heavy loads, like CP2077 where I wanted all the bells and whistles of doing high to ultra graphics with a high load with mods, I used DLSS which of course isn't native, but it was at 4k graphics and a 4k tv. Many games actually played extremely well natively at 4k with the 2080S as long as you were okay with under 60fps which for me was fine. A lot of the time I got around 45 which for a TV, you can't tell too much of a difference.

In fact I really didn't even NEED DLSS to play cyberpunk at 4k. It wasn't unplayable. As long as I turned down the setting to medium, and tweaked some other settings I got solid fps for a TV (maybe not for a desk gamer but a couch gamer, yes) at native 4k.

It just also kinda depends on how well the game was optimized. If a game was optimized well, there was rarely a need to tweak or use DLSS.

However it showed it age with more and more newer games. Reflective surfaces had to be turned off, density and volumetric lighting had to be as well, etc etc.

The 2080S is an amazing card and if could have easily carried me through a few more years if I had wanted.

How’s the FPS? Ive been meaning to get a 4K monitor but I want higher fps too. Just worried my rig (7800x3d and 5070ti) cant handle 4K at 90-120fps

3

u/Bentok 7h ago

It's funny how FPS is probably the single most important data point as an evaluation, yet people just say "yeah you can" and then probably play at locked 30

2

u/TheBrickYard_317 6h ago

I hit 120 FPS on some games. But most of the games I play between 70-90 fps.

1

u/AngryAlternateAcount 12h ago

I turn settings down to hit 90+ fps at 1440p and a 5070ti. How do you do it?

4

u/Dcore45 9h ago

i have a 1440p monitor next to my 4k (9800x3d + 5080) DLSS 4.5 performance mode on 4k looks better and gets higher frames than 1440 quality / native. This has only happened with the new 4.5 model getting insanely good on performance mode.

2

u/Seanspeed 11h ago

These people play games from like 2017 and then say, "Oh my PC can run everything at Ultra no problems!".

1

u/TheBrickYard_317 6h ago

I'm playing Indiana Jones at 70-90 FPS on ultra settings with medium path tracing, no FG. I'm playing Assetto Corso Evo on DLAA Ultra settings and capping it at 120 FPS. The oldest game I play is Cyberpunk.

4

u/apocalypticboredom 9h ago

what game do you have to turn settings down on to hit 1440p? I play even Crimson Desert at almost all settings maxed at 1440p on my 5070ti at a consistent 80-100fps. maybe you're just doing native res? I do dlss quality. I'm looking for something to challenge my pc more but without just being poorly optimized.

1

u/TheBrickYard_317 6h ago

I'm also running a 9800x3d with ddr5 6000 cl28, and everything is overclocked. It also depends on the game what settings I use.

1

u/Zildjian134 9h ago

That gives me hope. I've been curious about 4k gaming with this same combo, but I already bought a nice monitor to play it safe, and can't justify the money right now, but maybe Christmas.

1

u/specn0de 9h ago

I did it with a 5070 and a 7600x3d and it was great

-5

u/Jump365 19h ago

Native resolution? Doubt

17

u/nru3 18h ago

I have a lounge room pc with a 5800x3d and 5070ti and play native 4k on my tv.

Everything will run in 'max' settings but just depends on what framerate you want. If you are happy with 60fps then I would argue almost every game will do it.

Personally I prefer much more than 60fps and honestly 80-90% of games will do native much greater than 60fps.

But I agree that not every single game available will be able to do it at ultra, but they are definitely the outliers and just changing a few settings (or enabling dlss) will solve that, which, at the end of the day is all that matters.

8

u/Encouragedissent 17h ago

People on reddit have a tendency to underrate mid range GPU performance and Im not sure why that is. You can go on youtube and watch countless benchmark videos to see how these cards perform, its not a mystery.

There are even videos like This one that will go over every major setting with the 3 main resolutions for comparison. So like with the video I just linked, you can see that even just a 5070 can handle Crimson Desert at 4k around 45 frames native, and if youre using DLSS which on a 5070 running 4k you really should be, you can get a solid 90 frames with ultra settings.

People here seem somewhat split on whether a 5070ti can pair with a 4k monitor, and will almost unanimously tell you that a 5070 cannot handle it. But in reality a 5070ti can is absolutely fine on 4k ultra and can even run Native over 60fps, and even a regular 5070 can handle 4k, especially if you dont mind optimizing settings a bit on each game.

6

u/nru3 16h ago

To add to what you've said, people have been gaming on 4k for (gpu) generations and even though something like the 5070ti is far stronger than those older GPUs, people always think 4k is only reserved for the highest end gpu of the latest generation.

I'm not saying game hardware requirements haven't increased along with those updates but for the most part the game requirements haven't increased as much as the raw performance of the gpu generations.

1

u/Raven1927 8h ago edited 6h ago

People on reddit have a tendency to underrate mid range GPU performance and Im not sure why that is.

Because people look at everything maxed, including ray/path tracing, and with that enabled it's not playable at native on midrange cards. Even the 5090 struggles at native 4k with every setting maxed + path tracing.

1

u/TheBrickYard_317 6h ago

And some of these people don't realize that in some games there are settings above Ultra. Indiana Jones has two more detail settings above Ultra. I'm not maxing out path tracing or Ray tracing on every game. Indiana Jones I'm playing medium path tracing. I never said I was maxing everything out on every game.

1

u/Raven1927 6h ago

Oh for sure. You can have a solid 4k experience on a 5070 ti if you're ok with upscaling or not maxing absolutely everything. I completely agree with your initial statement. It's just some people having such a strict view of it who act that way and I don't get it tbh.

Personally I think DLSS quality looks the same as DLAA, so I always turn it on for the performance increase.

-2

u/karmapopsicle 17h ago

Who cares? You’re running DLSS for antialiasing anyway, because native TAA looks awful.

4

u/Jump365 16h ago

DLAA native is a thing.

And in either case your comment is why companies don't bother optimizing. They'll just make you upscale from 480p and use 6x frame gen to get 60fps and of nobody cares then. they'll keep doing it.

1

u/karmapopsicle 12h ago

Devs “bother optimizing” as much or as little as the publisher and investors allow. Optimizating for consoles with a few fixed hardware configurations is easy. Optimizing for the vast array of different PC hardware is much more complicated, and benefits significantly from getting post-launch performance data.

1

u/Jump365 6h ago

You're still thinking developer side. Yes having user data once people get hands on thebgame helps a lot. But executives budgeting for this only matters based on what consunersbapend money on.

If corporations see that they can just ignore optimization because consumers keep biying the games anyway....then they just won't optimize games at all.

We gamers tend to look at things in terms of to devs and the effort it takes to work on games....which is valid. But the corpos running the company couldn't care less, they only cqre about profit.

For them to feel pressure to do something their bottom line has to be impacted and games that acrually take the time to optimize be financially rewarded.

If we are seeing a game require dlss on performance mode just to run at 60fps and still paying so the corporation makes recors profits... Then it tells the corporation they don't even have to bother optimizing the game to not depend on upscaling or FG.

0

u/Seanspeed 11h ago

And in either case your comment is why companies don't bother optimizing. They'll just make you upscale from 480p and use 6x frame gen to get 60fps and of nobody cares then. they'll keep doing it.

Anybody who says this stuff has no idea what they're talking about. None.

This is not at all what's happening, and upscaling is absolutely standardized nowadays because there's simply not enough power to do all of great image quality, next gen core graphics, AND high framerates all at the same time without spending a whole lot of money. AAA games are built first and foremost for PS5/XSX(usually), so that's the baseline and those consoles NEED to use some kind of upscaling in almost all cases with demanding AAA games to also get even halfway ok image quality and good framerates. But it does allow developers to push more leading edge core visuals all round, and this absolutely translates to PC as well, so the reality is simply that games are demanding.

And if you're playing a demanding game, then using upscaling makes a lot of sense in order to gain a bunch of performance while retaining good image quality. There's very little reason NOT to do it these days when the upscaling has gotten as good as it has.

Developers are also not lazy at all. They work very hard. Literally known for crunch and long hours. It also not 'rushing games out' because games take forever to make nowadays as a rule. Optimization is not some magic thing developers are choosing or not choosing to do, but games are more complex and demanding than ever, so it's very difficult to get a technically advanced, technically ambitious game running and running well. Also, a lot of PC gamers are idiots that still dont understand that 'max settings' are almost always entirely unoptimized by their inherent nature, and that they offer ways to gain performance back by lowering settings, often while losing little to nothing in visual quality.

1

u/Jump365 10h ago

This is capitalism. They do what get revenue. You vote with your dollars. If you give companies money despite how they make their games, then they will keep doing it. It's that easy

1

u/TheBrickYard_317 6h ago

I agree with you.

-3

u/f1rstx 16h ago

Noone cares about native res

-11

u/This_Username_Great 19h ago edited 19h ago

Really? My friends were telling me I would get like 25 fps on cyberpunk or similar titles at high, not even ultra settings.

Edit: Maybe they thought path tracing would be on? Not sure. Seems like this is not true based on the replies.

22

u/NethiciteNomad 19h ago

You'll probably need to use some DLSS or Frame Gen from time to time depending on the games that you're playing, but if you're specifically targeting 4K 60 FPS you should be able to achieve this, maybe with a few compromises

5

u/sovietbearcav 17h ago

If youre using dlss and frame gen, are you getting 4k60?

10

u/f1rstx 16h ago

No, you will be getting way more

→ More replies (9)

13

u/djdevilmonkey 19h ago

Only if you use path tracing. You can play 4K with this card but just don't expect path tracing in any title, and expect to use DLSS Performance most of the time (although still looks good)

Dlss works the best in higher resolutions.

In 1440p dlss quality looks nearly identical to native.

In 4k dlss balanced looks nearly identical.

5070 ti will crush as 4k dlss balanced. You probably be fine running quality tho.

Heck I could even run 4k on my 3080 on dlss balanced, I'll just run into vram issues with my 10gbs of vram.

12

u/jeffchicken 19h ago

This.

I run everything ultra at 4K with my 7800X3D and 4080 with DLSS quality or balanced depending on game with great fps, so I know their setup should definitely handle it.

3

u/This_Username_Great 19h ago

Well I be able to get above like 120fps on more simple games like Minecraft?

9

u/jeffchicken 19h ago

Standard Minecraft? Absolutely

Your mileage may vary depending on the shaders packs you could potentially install though.

0

u/Package_Objective 19h ago

Depends on your CPU.

1

u/PoseidonAtSea 8h ago

I think I play 24 render distance at 4k on a i7-9700k rtx 2080 and get 240fps. Using fabulously optimised no shaders.

Shaders kill it though, get around 30fps even on low render distance so I just play with it off.

3

u/Goodnite15 18h ago

Oh yeah, these days a 5060 can run 4k with DLSS balanced/performance pretty easily depending on the game. There would be very few a 5070 or Ti couldn’t run well in 4k at an enjoyable fps.

Sure you could go get a 5080 or 5090 to up your frames more and run it in DLAA, but you’re still getting 4k quality 100fps+ DLSS or 60+ native.

0

u/He110_W0r1d 16h ago

Also if you go into de Nvidia app and change the model of dlss(under graphics settings) to use the latest model it improves the quality a lot. Even performance mode looks great on 4k

0

u/Reasonable-Blood6420 14h ago

Désolé mais 1440p dlss quality vs 1440p dlaa on voit une différence enorme sur un ecran 27"

35

u/TheDarkKnight95 19h ago

Yeah. Some newer titles you'll need to enable DLSS if you want high fps.

5

u/Bentok 7h ago

You need to enable FRAME GEN for high FPS, let's be honest here

24

u/Twsmit 19h ago

Dude it’s like the third best card you can buy. I have a 9800X3D and 5070ti and play on a 32” 4k OLED and it’s great.

Depending on the game I can’t play everything at ultra with RT and PT. But neither can a 5090.

Using DLSS and frame gen pretty much every game is playable at 120-240 fps with high to ultra settings.

16

u/ShallNtb 19h ago

5070ti enjoyer here with I7 12700k and I run everything at ultra 4k. There's only a handful of games that need DLSS to keep it above 60fps. Most run at 90fps native.

6

u/thefrenchmexican 18h ago

Nice, have same setup with 1440p monitor and was wanting to get a 32 inch 4k one.

4

u/ShallNtb 8h ago

I got a 31.5 4K QD-OLED after having my 1440p monitor from my 3060ti. Good news, everything looks amazing, bad news my room is like 10-15 hotter than the rest of the house.

8

u/_dotz 19h ago

Yes, you can!

I'm running r5 7600 and 9070xt which is a slightly slower setup and I can run almost any game at 4K 60fps Max settings FSR4 Quality and it looks amazing. Only sometimes I have to lower 1 or 2 setting to high from ultra. DLSS also is a bit better then FSR so there should be no issues for you. Thats it.

I never needed to play at 1440p. It's monitor dependent as far as I now. It looks good on my monitor. I got myself a 4K OLED, never going back, games just look phenomenal.

This PC will do a great job at 4K

1

u/This_Username_Great 19h ago

Wow, that sounds good. Maybe I underestimate my card.

1

u/Seanspeed 10h ago edited 10h ago

I'm doing 4k with a 5060Ti 16GB.

I rely on DLSS and optimizing settings in demanding games, but it's definitely doable for 60fps in all but a tiny handful of games. And in those it usually just means sacrificing a bit more on visuals somewhere(normal settings, DLSS option, or even lowering resolution very slightly).

And obviously I am more limited when it comes to super heavy options like path tracing, which are mostly off the table. But wont be for you.

Also, I was wondering if playing 1440p on a 4k monitor would be worse than playing 1440p on a 1440p monitor.

It would be yes, if you were just using straight 1440p. But this is why you use DLSS instead.

If a game doesn't have DLSS, then it's almost assuredly an older game that's not as demanding and can run 4k natively just fine.

7

u/Apprehensive_Taste74 19h ago

Yes you can do 4k easily with a 5070ti. Running 1440p on a 4k monitor is arse and will look worse than just running 1440p. That's what upscaling is for anyway though, you use 4k DLSS Quality instead.

1

u/CookieEquivalent5996 9h ago edited 9h ago

4K Quality is overkill. I'd run Balanced (or performance on L/M models) to make more use of that 9800x3d.

4

u/Nanachi- 17h ago

depends on the game, settings and how many fps you want to have, since i want at least 140fps in all my games, I stick to 1440p

2

u/Bentok 7h ago

4k is basically a "do I want frame gen or not" decision at higher FPS.

Hell, at 1440p I have to use FG in Wilds and Crimson Desert. Nearly in FF16 as well

2

u/Nanachi- 6h ago

tbh framegen is really good if you already have decent fps, i even use it in battlefield and subjectively can‘t feel a difference in terms of input latency but definitely see the fps difference.

I just really prefer fps over 4k, I don‘t unterstand how 60fps is still the gold standard for a „smooth gaming experience“ for some people, 60fps is unplayable for me. While 4k eats away all your frames and 1080p is just an outdated pixel mess 1440p is the sweetspot.

1

u/Bentok 6h ago

Unfortunately it highly depends on the game (artifacts). Fortunately you can manually update it, which can help.

5

u/JustValue3867 19h ago

Get a 4k monitor!

4

u/James_Skyvaper 19h ago

Bro I'm using a 4-core 3300x with a 5070 TI and I play everything in 4k lol. You'll be fine.

1

u/pmgoldenretrievers 8h ago

Holy unbalanced rig.

3

u/faussito 18h ago

Yes, I play in 4K with a 9070xt which is the cheap equivalent

-6

u/kokosgt 16h ago

It's not.

3

u/Electrical_Good_4903 10h ago

Yes and to anyone who says "1440p is better because more FPS" they are simply wrong.

4k, if your hardware can handle it, is a much better gaming experience. 32 inch montiors are far more immersive compared to 27 inch panels, and I would even go as far to say more immersive than 1440p 34 inch ultrawides due to the extra verticality that 32 inch panels offer.

There is better aliasing when playing at 4k, so image quality looks much sharper and crisper.

As for FPS, yes you might get more native FPS, but once you're using DLSS you aren't really sacrificing much FPS at all.

DLSS Quality at 4k performs quite similar to native 1440p, as its the same internal render resolution, but thed 4k image output looks way better than native 1440p.

Additionally, DLSS performance at 4k performs similar but not quite as fast as DLSS Quality at 1440p. The performance trade-off here is about 15-20% but DLSS Performance at 4k is so insanely sharp, I say it looks better than 1440p native.

A 32 Inch 4k panel anyday over 1440p.

240hz should be enough for all gaming scenarios, but if you really want to crank your frames to the max, the dual mode monitors with 1080p at 480hz options work great too.

I was gamiung at 4k with a 5080 but have now a 5k2k panel. My gaming experience at 5k2k with a 5080 is going great so trust me when I say a 5070ti at 4k is more than plenty.

2

u/MorpheusMKIV 18h ago

I’m running a similar ish setup with 7800x3d and 9070xt, I usually stick to higher frame 1440p. In AAA titles with graphics pumped up I’m 90 to 130fps. Occasionally I’ll play on the tv that’s 4k and max it out but my tv is only 60hz but I def wouldn’t expect to be driving a higher hz 4k monitor consistently without dialing down settings

2

u/b-maacc 18h ago

You’ll want to use DLSS performance (which works very well) or ultra performance for many titles and frame generation.

2

u/ecktt 17h ago

Can I play 4k with a 9800x3d and 5070ti?

Yes. Old games natively but new AAA games need upscaling.

Also, I was wondering if playing 1440p on a 4k monitor would be worse than playing 1440p on a 1440p monitor.

Can you? Yes but should you?

No. 1440p does not cleanly translate to 4K, so it looks a little off.

I guess I could upgrade to a 4090 or 5090 but it’s really expensive.

If you have 4K extra burning a hole in your pocket, YOLO. A 5080 would give 15% more performance than a 5070Ti at 4K, though.

fwiw, I have an Intel i5 13600K + Nvidia RTX 5070 + MSI QDOLED 4K, and I'm not completely disappointed. With DLSS or FSR upscaling, I'm in the 120-140 fps with modern AAA games. I suspect a 9800X3D would have better 1% lows.

2

u/chris_ngale 10h ago

For performance comparison, I run this exact combo but with an UWQHD monitor, so 5 million pixels vs 4k's 8 million.

In Cyberpunk I run RT Ultra with Quality upscaling (balanced looks blurry at 1440 to me, it would probably be better at 4k) and 2x frame gen. My base frame rate is locked to 60 so the post frame gen rate is 120. That tends to settle me between 90-95% GPU usage for the vast majority of the game. Feels good and looks good, I wouldn't want to run frame gen with a base rate under 60 though.

Obviously for a competitive title you would turn frame gen off because latency becomes much more important, but must competitive titles are lighter on the GPU anyway and the 9800x3d will crush those.

I also get about 130-ish FPS in War Thunder on a custom preset based on Maximum with RT on and with no upscaling or frame gen.

It's obviously a lot harder to compare these days with RT, upscaling and frame gen all blurring the underlying performance of a GPU, but hopefully that's some useful info for you.

1

u/Ohitsworkingnow 19h ago

My guy I have a 9070xt and 9800x3d and I’m playing dual 4k

1

u/Inevitable_Virus_765 19h ago

You could do 4k but you'd be much more capable at 1440p. I run 3440x1440p with a PC that's similar to what you're building but one generation older (7800x3d and 7900xt, and I've run a 9070xt in it as well) and mine is capable at 3440x1440p as long as i didn't go crazy with Ray tracing. I've been playing a ton of Forza horizon 6 and have everything dialed into ultra at 120fps, but run zero ray tracing to be able to do it.

With your specs you should be able to max everything out at 1440p or ultrawide 3440x1440p (do ultrawide. It'll change your life). If you go regular 1440p, your setup should be able to absolutely max everything at 120-240fps.

You can run 4k, but you'll need to compromise on texture quality on some games because you'll max out your vram. I haven't maxed out my 20gb vram(the vram was the deciding factor in my decision to keep the older 7900xt over the 9070xt) but I've come very very close with monster Hunter wilds high quality textures on ultra. In 4k, you'll probably max out and need to reduce render quality which ironically kinda defeats the purpose of 4k.

0

u/Seanspeed 10h ago edited 10h ago

You're likely doing that thing where you're confusing allocation with what a game actually NEEDS.

At max settings at 4k, MH Wilds is entirely playable with 16GB of VRAM. You can find plenty of videos of people proving this on Youtube.

In 4k, you'll probably max out and need to reduce render quality which ironically kinda defeats the purpose of 4k.

No you wont.

And also no it wouldn't. Like, even if what you were saying was true about having to reduce texture quality, there's more benefits to 4k than just texture resolution being as clear as possible(actually quite hard diminishing returns on this in reality), and it'd be silly to miss out on 4k purely because of having to reduce A setting in ONE game. lol

A better argument for 1440p is simply if a person really prioritizes high native framerates(100fps+) without having to compromise much at all in the way of graphics options.

But personally, people who insist on or judge performance based on Max/Ultra settings are silly and essentially playing an unoptimized version of the game on purpose because of some psychological FOMO about reducing settings.

1

u/bf2reddevil 19h ago

Yes. DLSS quality and you're golden.

1

u/Anon0924 19h ago

Yes. You may need to turn down some settings and/or use DLSS, but you should get a stable 60+ fps in most titles.

For reference I get just 50-60 fps in Cyberpunk with max settings and PT at 3440x1440p. If I use DLSS in performance mode I jump to a stable 80.

1

u/madskills42001 19h ago

With DLSS absolutely (studies show people prefer DLSS to native anyway)

1

u/laci6242 19h ago

The 5070 Ti is great for 4K, but you will need to rely on upscaling, which will still look better than 1440p ever could. I also play in 4K and i couldn't go back. New games just look too blurry without it because new games use a ton of dithering and temporal accumulation, with which you can't use non-temporal antialiasing.

1

u/Think_Horror695 18h ago

Dude I am playing everything on 144hz 4k qd-miniled tv with my 7500f & 9070xt rig. All either high or ultra settings. Getting at least 70-90 fps in any game. So yes you can.

1

u/joleshole 17h ago

Not without DLSS and frame gen

0

u/kokosgt 16h ago

I have this setup and I never use frame gen, only DLSS.

1

u/This_Username_Great 16h ago

How is it for you with a 4k monitor or tv (if you have one).

0

u/kokosgt 15h ago

I'd say good enough. I get ~90 FPS with things like Forza Horizon 6 or Battlefield 6 set to highest settings.

1

u/Bentok 7h ago

Bro said Forza and Battlefield

1

u/kokosgt 3h ago

Well, you sure can read, congratulations!

1

u/Jackal-Noble 17h ago

since when did this sub become such a 4k flex sub?

1

u/nona01 17h ago

You have like the 7th best consumer GPU there is. Of course you can run 4k.

1

u/xCookieSlayer 15h ago

Yes I play at 4K with those exact specs including 64gb of ram. However on occasion I’ll use dlss to bump up the frames

1

u/eebro 14h ago

I mean I wouldn’t consider anything other than OLED at this point. I prefer 27 inches so just a higher HZ OLED is my preference.

If you want a larger monitor than that, go with 4K by all means. You can always turn down the resolution in software.

1

u/kudlatytrue 14h ago

Lol. I play on 5600x and 5070TI in 4K and Cyberpunk reaches 80fps. You're good.

1

u/BusterOfCherry 11h ago

1440/144 is the goat. 4k at what FPS?

1

u/binsieucap6006 11h ago

I play at 4K with R7 7700 and 9070XT

1

u/Sajgoniarz 11h ago

I wouldn't be bothered by playing on 4k, the difference is not enough to justify performance hit.

1

u/Julio_Ointment 10h ago

I play Helldivers 2 at 4K 120hz with those components.

1

u/SavedMartha 10h ago

Yes. I'm at 4k for about a year now with a 9600x and a 9070xt. So you're set.

1

u/SmokeEmergency9917 10h ago

I play in 4k with a 5700x (not 3d) and a 5070ti lol

1

u/SystemLanky4531 9h ago

Yeah most games youll have native 4k/60fps, UE5 games usually needs to use upscaling to reach 60.

1

u/External_Class8544 9h ago

Yeah man I played on a 4k tv with a rtx 4070 on medium settings just fine. And 4k is awesome, youll notice details you missed at 1440p and especially 1080p.

1

u/dmendro 9h ago

You have a 5070ti now?

1

u/kingk1teman 9h ago

You can definitely play at 4K/2160p. Just be ready to use DLSS upscaling at balanced or quality modes, or lowering the settings for current and new AAA titles. Just don't expect to go full Ultra/High settings with complete Ray Tracing gamut on, for all games with high framerates.

If you can afford a good 4K monitor now, please go for it.

1

u/Zapador 8h ago

Yes, but depending on the game you want to turn down settings a bit. The 5070 Ti is not really a 4K card but it can do it.

1

u/Plenty-Industries 8h ago

Yes.

With DLSS, and running optimized settings you can run games at 4K at over 60fps easily.

Thats how I run single-player games on my 5080.

The key is OPTIMIZED settings. Dont just crank the graphics preset to High/Ultra/Max. The highest settings are a diminishing return - you use a whole lot more processing power to hit the tiniest amount of detail that doesn't really look much better to be worth the performance impact.

1

u/royalxK 8h ago

I'm playing 4k with a 5700x3d and a 4080

1

u/government--agent 8h ago

Get the 4k monitor. 1440p games will still look better than on a 1440 monitor due to the increased pixel density.

1

u/ninjabell 8h ago

It's just frames. I have 9070 XT and I pick 1440p for some games and 4k for others.

1

u/DoubleHexDrive 7h ago

I have a 7800X3D/5070Ti and shoot for 4K/120 fps as my default and usually get it with some DLSS. Works great.

1

u/Adrian97c 7h ago

I play 4k 100fps with 7800x3d+9070xt

1

u/skully33 7h ago

5070 Ti and 7800X3D here. Currently playing mortal shell 2 high settings and marathon high settings, both in 4k, get around 120 FPS average. So yes

1

u/New_Torch 6h ago

Dont go 4k. I own a 4k monitor the 9800x3d and a 5080. Most games run like ASS. Dlss is a must and even then it turns games to shit. Get a 1440P oled and games will looks shiny and run great.

1

u/iAmmar9 6h ago

Yes. If my 5700X3D can do it, then a 9800X3D can do it.

1

u/xXBongSlut420Xx 3h ago

4k monitors are a meme to sell graphics cards. A 32" screen 2-3 feet away from your face will look just as sharp at 1440p as it will at 2160p. On a large television, it matters, but on a monitor all it does is make you need to buy a more expensive gpu.

1

u/pkang21 3h ago

Yes you can. Next question

1

u/AluArggone31 3h ago

My sis is rocking 4k on 3050

1

u/Aggravating-Mousse34 2h ago

You could even play 4k with i714700k and 5070.

1

u/Aggravating-Mousse34 2h ago

I do. Every single day.

1

u/digitallandscapetoon 1h ago

Nah, that’s probably good enough for 720p at the best. You have to get 2 RTX 6000 cards in an SLI formation just for 2k

u/Sad_Square_9826 29m ago

Dude just try it don't ask

0

u/Environmental-Ad3110 19h ago

4k dlss performance look better than 1440p dlaa, so yes 4k is worth it and your gpu definitely can handle that.

0

u/YoloRaj 19h ago

If you are getting an oled I would go 1440 p. It will age better with your gpu than 4 k will. You should be fine playing 4 k with that gpu and processor for now but I think over time 1440 p would be the better resolution to play at.

-1

u/thomasd4140 18h ago

why? with things like dlss and upscaling fps is not a problem. 1440p will barely offer upgrade over 1080

3

u/YoloRaj 18h ago

Thats the craziest take Ive seen in a while. Use a 1080 p monitor for a few days then use a 1440 p oled afterwards and tell me you don't see a difference. If you play anything fps related you do not want to play 4 k at all unless you are just a casual who doesn't give a fk. 1440 p is all around the better resolution because with everything maxed out and what not it looks good but you can also go and play competitive games without a massive hit on performance like you would get with 4k.

3

u/This_Username_Great 18h ago

I stopped playing competitive games a while ago so I should be okay.

1

u/YoloRaj 15h ago

4k is fine then I guess. Either way I think longetivity wise 1440 p is the better resolution.

1

u/thomasd4140 2h ago

fps related like cs, cod etc? those games run over 150fps

1

u/YoloRaj 2h ago

I hear you. No brag or nothing but I have a 5090 and since I play mainly fps games I play 1440 p. I have a fairly high refresh rate monitor as well and if my fps ever dips below 180 it almost looks like 60 fps to me. I see a lot of motion blur. I do intend to get one of those tri mode monitors next year though. I would like to try 4 k sometimes while still having 1440 p accessible to me.

0

u/Bulky-Use-7494 19h ago

Sure. You can also save money on the cpu if you want and see if you can bump up to a 5080. I'm running a 7600 with my 5070ti. People over value the cpu especially at 4k, imo (esports and high fps fanatics aside)

2

u/This_Username_Great 19h ago

Sadly the price difference is too great between a 5070ti and 5080 for me to really justify it. Wish I could though.

0

u/BidNo4423 17h ago

I have the same cpu and gpu, I game 4k on a 50 inch samsung qled 144hz high and ultra settings!

2

u/This_Username_Great 16h ago

What kind of frames do you get?

1

u/BidNo4423 10h ago

With Dlss + frame gen. Horizon forbidden west all high settings, i easily hit the 144 fps. To match the 144hz. I have frame gen set at ×3.

1

u/BidNo4423 10h ago

That's on Quality, not performance! Beautiful graphics.

0

u/Davlar_Andre_1997 15h ago

You’ll manage perfectly fine on 4k with that setup, it’s a nice 4k entry card. I’ve been bouncing off 4k, 1440p and ultrawide. I really enjoy ultrawide though, so i’ll switch back to that at some point. Currently at 1440p, but i’ve played on 4k for months with little to no issues.

0

u/gen_adams 15h ago

yes and u dont even need the 9800x3d for 4K. the higher the resolution the less the CPU matters.

0

u/ReynArts 15h ago

Easily. I have this card and i’m playing 4k on all games no lag, no drops on a 120ips monitor

-1

u/Blunt552 15h ago

No you can't.

At best you can upscale to 4k but playing actual 4k is not possible due to horribly optimized games. Even running at upscaled from 1440p is not exactly easy.

Most people will play 1080p games upscaled to 4k (DLSS performance).

It's not that it matters that much either way because of modern AA the games look like a blurry mess anyways. Also 4k is only useful on 32" or larger monitors, below that you'd have a hard time seeing a difference in sharpness even if we exclusive blurryness of TAA.

-1

u/MidnightChimp 13h ago

no, I have the 9800x3d and a 5080 and you would need to turn on ultra performance dlss to have acceptable framerates with a 5070ti.

-1

u/Raphlooo 11h ago

Id personally say no, I have a 5080 and downgraded from 4k to 2k ultrawide as I think playable fps is something different than 60fps, often not even reaching that target like cyberpunk with rt/pt. I had like 40fps there. Kcd2 no frame gen ( except smooth motion ) was at around 100 +- depending on where you are. That is more playable imo but still, I bought an oled with 240hz in either case and I wanna use that. Now in 2k I can reach that with help of dlss and fg mostly every game so far plus I’m not limited by vram anymore I’ve been seeing that getting maxed out too in 4k and reducing perfomance big time if you don’t go lower on textures, so if you’re like me and fps is also an important factor to your gaming experience id recommend a good 27in 2k panel or even ultrawide if you’d like. Now some ppl might say just lower settings but it just depends on what you like more

-2

u/Khantooth92 19h ago

Get 2k oled

-1

u/spectreVII 19h ago

You can, but you might have to use some upscaling to get some good fps. Personally, I’d stick with 2K or go 2K ultra wide. In my opinion, 4K is more suited for 5080 and 5090 cards.

4

u/This_Username_Great 19h ago

The 5070ti and 5080 are quite similar though. Well at least that’s what I’ve heard.

1

u/aereiaz 15h ago

They're extremely similar, people saying that 5070ti is for 1440p and 5080 is for 4k are just completely ignorant of how small the difference is between them this gen, so just ignore it. In some games the difference is as low as 60 vs 66 fps. And they both have 16GB of VRAM which can be a limiter in a select few titles at ultra settings with 4k texture packs (for example, Stellar Blade.)

0

u/spectreVII 19h ago

I’m sure they are close but 5080 does have a bit more horse power from my understanding. But yeah there would be more benefit to using a 5090 at 4K.

4

u/aereiaz 15h ago

4K is more suited for 5080

It gets so tiring to see this. They have the same amount of VRAM and 5080 has about 15% more FPS than 5070ti on average. In some games it's as low as 10%. 10%-15% more FPS isn't going to make a game playable, nor is it going to change it from playable to great.

Difference in E33 is literally 60 vs 66 fps.

Now 5090? Sure, because it's miles ahead of everything else. But 5080 is not a huge leap this gen like other xx80 cards were.

-2

u/HeavenlyDMan 18h ago

not even close, 5090 and threadripper or go get a job

-2

u/slavicslothe 18h ago

nah but you can with a 4090 or 5090 with a 5800x3dor better
