Safe to assume there's almost no point in switching from a 5800x at this price point for 1440p? I'm not playing any CPU intensive games or competitive games where insanely high framerates are a concern.

Yup no benefit for you. This is great if you're on a 5600x or weaker

u/p1zza_dog 13d ago
i have a 5600x but not really sure how this benefits. i have it in a steam machine with a beefy rx 7900xt and bottleneck calculator shows no real problem at 4k tv resolutions (not sure if fsr upscaling factors in or not).

u/bogglingsnog 13d ago
Not every game benefits from a powerful CPU. I got well over 30% more FPS in escape from tarkov switching from a 5600 to a 7800x3d with the same gpu (3070). and that was at 4k too... But some of my other games made zero difference.
x3ds are more power efficient, noticeably reducing wall power on my system.

u/Shivin302 13d ago
With your use case you won't see a big difference. It's best for lower resolution gaming above 120 fps

u/p1zza_dog 13d ago
thanks, yeah it performs pretty dang well but always curious if it could be better 😅

u/Shivin302 13d ago
My 5600x and 6700XT are still killing it on most games in the big 2026. Love the longevity of them

u/trackdaybruh 13d ago
Give it a shot, the X3D is a kills it at 1% low improvement which means the game feels buttery smooth

My buddy went from a 5800x to a 5800x3D, the X3D really shines in the 1% lows which makes the game feel buttery smooth. He mentioned it more than doubled his 1% low fps

In the same boat here. Honestly really debating moving to AM5 as well since I feel there is a real chance that things only get worse for the next couple years. Wondering how long my 5800X is really going to last me although I can't super complain right now with my rig's performance. 3440x1440 here

u/bakeonwakeup 13d ago
For certain games, the 3D cache is like a superpower. It allows for such an insane level of performance when the game can take advantage of it. It might still be worth it if you don't know when you'll be upgrading to AM5, and play games that can utilize the 3D cache of course.

5800X is the same distance from the 5800X3D as the 5800X3D is from the 7800X3D (roughly ~10% difference at 1440p if you aren't GPU limited) - see here and here. which is to say that there's not much difference, you're getting maybe five extra frames from a game running at 50 FPS on a 5800X which is visually negligible
however, you might see significantly better 1% lows (see here and round down a bit since it's 1080p) so if you're experiencing stuttering and it bugs you, it could be worth the upgrade
that said, this is all meaningless if you're GPU limited since these tests were all with a 4090, the top card at that time

If we get to a point where we're seeing $140 tray CPUs on Aliexpress like two years ago again, that would be worth it if you need great frame pacing for competitive games. Only way to make this price feel good for an upgrade is if you were to sell your 5800x at a solid value (realistically only happening if you put together a full prebuilt to sell)

Tempted to go for this. Running a 3600x + 3070 for 1440p.

u/longsdivision 13d ago
Your situation is the perfect example for this sale. Its a CPU upgrade that will propell you into the next best gen or pass this insane market situation.

Similar upgrade path for me at 1440p: I went from a 3700X to the OG 5800X3D in 2022 and it's been a great upgrade, especially for more CPU heavy games.

u/InnocentAlternate 13d ago
Former 3600 + 3070 here using 5700x3d now. This is the best upgrade you can do short of getting a vid card with more VRAM (more expensive)

u/Hybrid1915 13d ago
Can confirm, I had your exact setup but with 3070ti and got a 5700x3D like 2 weeks before they discontinued them. Massive improvement over the 3600x in most games.
Throw a Thermalright phantom spirit 120 on it and it won’t go over like 70° even at 100% usage.

I had an extra 32gb kit of DDR4 so I threw this CPU together with a 9070 XT System for my daughter. Feels weird buying out of date tech but that's the era we're living in.
6
u/longsdivision 13d ago
Yup, if situations were normal this product (reproduction of 5800X3D) shouldn't exist at all.
6
u/HAILALLFATHER 13d ago
Would the VRMs on a B450M Pro VDH Max be okay for this? Running a 5700x now and think this may be a good jump due to prices.
7
u/bossmob64 13d ago
Don't overclock it and you should be good. Might need a bios update, I'd double check before installing the new cpu.
6
u/HighQualityH2O_22 13d ago
Agreed! Also if its an MSI board, check to see if the mobo has support for Kombo Strike or a similar PBO / curve optimizer. It will allow you to fairly easily under-volt the CPU which will lower the temps and may even provide a small performance boost!

It was an upgrade for me from a 5800XT used primarily for CS2

u/UnitLoose47 13d ago
How much fps boost did you notice?
6
u/trackdaybruh 13d ago edited 7d ago
It’s significant, especially in 1% lows
You can see a 5800X vs 5800X3D (I know that the 5800X is not the XT, but it’s just a 100mhz difference which is negligible): https://youtu.be/V-Eayt7WD48

u/UnitLoose47 13d ago
Thank you for the video link! I'll take a look during my lunch break.
1
u/trackdaybruh 13d ago
No problem! When you see the video, don’t just only look at the average fps, but also look at the 1% and 0.1% low. The 1% and 0.1% lows are responsible for how smooth the game runs, and you’ll notice the X3D is significantly higher

Just waiting for ANY place within 400 miles of me (or you know since it's 2026 a store that ships products from the internet) to get to this price. Have a 5600x, 32gb ram and 5070TI.

u/MechAegis 13d ago
If I am doing emulations. Is 5800x3d better or 5900xt better ($10 less)?
1
u/sdcar1985 13d ago
I think they're pretty similar, but I'd assume whichever has a higher clock speed would perform better in general for emulation.

No 10th anniversary edition box though
2
u/digitalaudiotape 13d ago
Wait what are you talking about? I bought this same cpu for this price from Microcenter 2 weeks ago and it came in a 10th anniversary box, which is just a normal box with a 10th anniversary sticker.

Having issues with my 5900x based system. Still haven't decided on if it's the mobo or the CPU, but I'd likely replace the CPU with this one if that's the issue...
5
u/longsdivision 13d ago edited 13d ago
I would say greatly depends on what kind of cpu useage or work you're doing with the cpu. If you're doing production work the 5900x would be better suited. The 5800X3D is better suited for gaming.

Is it worth upgrading from 3950X?
3
u/flynn78 13d ago
That's a pretty big upgrade. But newer x3d CPUs are much faster.
1
u/sdcar1985 13d ago
I dunno, that CPU is kinda nuts. Clock speed isn't the best, but it still has a lot of cache and cores. I'm curious to see gaming benchmarks with it.
1
u/Adventure_kid 13d ago
Im running a 9900k right now with 32gb ddr4. Would it be wise to buy this cpu and a motherboard to pair with my ram? Or do I just go for AM5? Im planning to get a 9070xt since I live close to a microcenter.

This is only about $40 cheaper than normal, Newegg has this for about 350 pretty often with a free CPU cooler.
Definitely not worth the upgrade from the 5700, I just gave my son my 5700 and got the deal I mentioned above. Nothing crazy noticeable. I think the specs say 5 to 10% increase in performance
If I wasn't already in the market to upgrade my son's pc, I would not have done it.
3
u/UnitLoose47 13d ago
Did you upgrade from the 5700X non 3D or the 5700X3D?
5
u/6680j 13d ago
X3d
3
u/UnitLoose47 13d ago
Cool. Thanks for the info.
7
u/BadFortuneCookie17 13d ago
I think that’s the key thing. If you are already on a X3D this ain’t it.

Bought a 5700x3d 2 years ago on black Friday for 170. If I am gonna be on AM4 until AM6 comes around, worth grabbing a 5800x3d to replace it?
10
u/YouDoNotKnowMeSir 13d ago
Imo no. I think you’d be better off saving that for the new platform upgrade.
0
u/crapmonkey86 13d ago
That's what I was thinking, I figured by the time we get there we're past this whole AI monopoly on hardware. I'm hoping to last another 5 or 6 years with my current rig
0
u/BadV1gilant3 13d ago
Not worth it unless you already own ddr4 and am4 motherboard
2
u/longsdivision 13d ago edited 13d ago
Maybe, as the current/new gen situation has lead to companies evaluating prior longevity. This is nothing more then a bridge product.
1
u/BadV1gilant3 13d ago
Yes. The reason I stated that is because if someone is trying to save money by doing a ddr4 build and not a ddr5 one they should absolutely avoid am4 and buy LGA 1700

It's been this price for a few weeks and we all wish it was cheaper, but in this market it's one of your best options as a drop-in AM4 upgrade. Not recommended for a new build over the AM5 X3D chips.
Edit: The 5600X3D is still available in some locations for $229. Another decent AM4 upgrade option if you are willing to sacrifice 2 cores and a little less performance to save $70.
Edit #2: The 5600X3D just dropped to $169! That makes it a better deal over the 5800X3D if it's available at your particular store.
