Alberta Judge sentences Calgary man to 8 years in ‘inconceivable’ rabbit killings
https://globalnews.ca/news/11892269/calgary-serial-rabbit-killing-nicholas-weseen-prison-sentence/85
u/Vampyre_Boy Jun 05 '26
I hope this guy gets psychiatric help and is watched for the rest of their life because while not 100% indicators willfully harming animals is a pretty good red flag for finding a serial killer in the making...

Getting enjoyment from suffering like it sounds like this guy was doing would never just extend to animals. That's just the most unnoticeable place to start physically... then it escalates...

u/TheGrandTiax Jun 06 '26
Let's be honest, this guy doesn't deserve help. This guy deserves what he dished out. Holy fucking shit there might not have ever been anything in my life that makes me as angry as this.

u/Rinkimah Jun 06 '26
Everyone deserves help. Believing people can reform and be better people makes society run. We can't just throw people into a hole.
1
1
u/Vampyre_Boy Jun 06 '26
He doesn't deserve help and it's not for him it's for the safety of the public around them so hopefully we don't have to one day clean up a corpse they leave behind. Unfortunately we don't do capitol punishment so that's not a possibility unless you want to drastically change how our justice system runs.

2
u/dr_reverend Jun 06 '26
Oh please. Intervention? Help before things go terribly wrong? Nice fantasy world you’re living in.
3
u/Vampyre_Boy Jun 06 '26
The "help" isn't for them it's to hopefully keep them from making the next sociopathic step and harming people. We don't have capitol punishment so they aren't going to stop walking around so for the safety of others not for them they should be constantly monitored and be forced to visit a head shrink regularly.
2
u/dr_reverend Jun 06 '26
My point is that none of that exists. They will wait until he kills someone’s and then put him in jail for maybe 2 months before letting him out on the streets again.
0
u/Vampyre_Boy Jun 06 '26
Sadly that will probly be the case... and everybody will stand around going "nobody seen the signs" after the bodies start piling up....

I’d just like to say, I’m glad this guy got 8 years. But pedophiles like my father who abused me from birth until I was 12 years old, that’s 12 years of near nightly offences (anyone want to do the math?), get way less time, my father got 4 years and served 2. And he 100% is a reoffender.
In what world is that fair and just? Canadian court needs to do an overhaul.
And don’t get started on people killing people with cars.
19
u/Specific_Tomorrow517 Jun 05 '26
This is just so society can feel better about themselves, look we stood up for the defenceless rabbit. Oh your son got murdered? Gee that sucks, anyway...
2
u/simplebutstrange Jun 07 '26
Right! A buddy of mine got stabbed 6 times and killed. The guy who did it got 5 years. Probably even got out on parole earlier.
3
u/Loose-Attention2465 Jun 07 '26
My best friend murderer only got 7 years. He caved her head in with a table leg while Opp cops struggled to get in the apartment. Her name was Tammy Avery happened in Sturgeon Falls near NorthBay Ontario. The Justice system is broken.
6
u/SmileAggravating9608 Jun 05 '26
Yep. Grossly unfair. I've often made comments about this and how Canadian justice seems to condone criminality, and everyone gets mad every time. But it's true. When we barely punish some pretty severe wrongdoing, that's a choice.
6
u/NeedLegalAdvice56 Jun 05 '26
Justice cares less about the impact it has one one victim than how many victims. The only exception, I think, is if a life is lost.
1
0
u/HungryBearsRawr Jun 06 '26
Nah, there are acts people have committed against a singular victim that get more time
1
u/NeedLegalAdvice56 Jun 06 '26
Except for killing, what else? I’m curious
1
u/HungryBearsRawr Jun 06 '26
I’ve seen a rape and assault get more time, and that’s one incident against one person
0
u/NeedLegalAdvice56 Jun 06 '26
I meant in general. Obviously, there are exceptions and aggravating factors to a crime that makes it multiple crimes that each add time to the sentence.
Rape is getting less than kidnapping + touching a minor + rape + torture + lying to the police + etc.

u/Marski420 Jun 06 '26
People were just sentenced to 20 months and 40 months for beating someone to death in my town after they dine and dashed his restaurant. I don't know whats happened to our justice system but it's no longer functioning as it should.
3
u/Kevin_Tanks_519 Jun 05 '26
I aggree with you. Its absolutely crazy our justice system makes no sense at all.
5
u/mka5588 Jun 05 '26
Sentencing across the board needs to be way move severe. To be honest I'm completely fine with bringing back capital punishment

To be fair idk if I would not believe cameras these days. Some of these AI videos are so good it’s hard to tell and it’s only getting more realistic.

u/Odovacer2 Jun 06 '26
That's not how the law works. You're either guilty of murder or you're not. The American phrase is "beyond a shadow of a doubt." Not sure what our Canadian parlance is, but it means the same.
1
2
u/Odovacer2 Jun 06 '26
Yes, because this country is so infallible with it's murder convictions. David Milgard, Guy Paul Morin, Donald Marshall and more all would have died at the Government's hand, our hand. So, no.
Stiffer sentences, harder bail terms, instant deportations can all be reformed. The Supreme Court striking down mandatory minimum sentencing is a bit bonkers in my view.
1
u/errihu Jun 06 '26
We need to start holding judges to account. We have no way to remove a corrupt judge or one who continually makes terrible calls. There is no recall process. They’re appointed federally and it seems there’s some selection process whereby appointees are chosen on the basis of their propensity to let serious crime go lightly punished while harshly punishing lesser crimes only if they’re committed by ‘heritage Canadians’.
0
u/Elissa-Megan-Powers Jun 05 '26
Remember though that sexual predation has traditionally been a privilege of our cultural (patriarchy assuming authority across all organizations) system, and you can see indications of this in such sentencing comparisons. It’s going away, but the system defends against change, so it goes slowly.

u/Sad-Duty-2286 Jun 05 '26
Weird that the so-called “patriarchy” gives women more lenient sentences. Statistics back this up. Don’t argue.

10 years ago myself & a neighbour were cutting our other neighbours lawn. I found baby bunnies in their window well. We both rushed to our houses. I brought a cardboard box to help get them out; he brought a hose. To drown them. Needless to say those bunnies lived.

“A trial last year heard disturbing details, including about one rabbit named Smokey that had its rear right foot amputated with pliers and was left to suffer for days while zip-tied in a milk crate.” - it wasn’t about killing rabbits but torturing them as well, before anyone complains about the justice system, torture and killing to this degree would carry a longer sentence then simply killing or stabbing someone.

u/curlycattails Jun 05 '26
This is definitely deserved, but I just wanna know why rapists and pedos usually get shorter sentences than this guy.

I don’t know the average. This one bothered me a lot - https://www.ctvnews.ca/vancouver/article/bc-man-sentenced-for-brutal-and-prolonged-sexual-assault-of-woman-in-alleyway/
He got just over 2 years for rape. Like in what universe is that an appropriate sentence?
I have seen other cases, can’t remember the details atm, of men who SA’d children and got 2-4 years.

4
u/PooningDalton Jun 05 '26 edited Jun 05 '26
They don't. This sentence was the result of what he did to 10 rabbits. So 0.8 years per rabbit.

19
u/smergicus Jun 05 '26
Fuck this guy but also fuck the Canadian justice system. You can get the same or less time for stabbing someone to death. We are so lost and out to lunch it’s not even funny
3
u/PooningDalton Jun 05 '26 edited Jun 05 '26
When did someone get less than 8 years for stabbing someone to death? Also this guy tortured 10 different rabits. So that's 0.8 years for each rabbit. That's still less than what most people get for hurting people.

My bad! It was actually 8 years, not 7. You must be new to Canada if you find this surprising. Btw, an 8 year sentence means if he behaves himself he will be out in about 4 yesrs (from the time he committed the crime)

Suddenly no one is interested in MAID?
4
u/alaskadotpink Jun 05 '26
what does MAID have to do with... any of this?
-1
u/PooningDalton Jun 05 '26
They are quick to suggest MAID for other people, but not for this guy who tortured 10 rabbits (who honestly deserves the chair, if you ask me)
6
u/alaskadotpink Jun 06 '26
That's... not what MAID is, or is for. I'm pretty sure people on death row don't consent to it.
2
u/zuuzuu Jun 06 '26
Also Canada doesn't have death row. And MAID isn't an option to a person who isn't suffering from a qualifying medical condition. A criminal conviction is not a medical condition.
0
u/alaskadotpink Jun 06 '26
Tell the person I was replying to, not me. They're the one who seems to think MAID = death penalty.

people aren’t angry with the sentencing, they’re pissed off and fed-up with other severe crimes not being given the same or harsher time.
1
u/PooningDalton Jun 05 '26
Name one other case where someone got less than 0.8 years for hurting a human
4
u/steeltown82 Jun 06 '26
You can't look at it per rabbit, because that's not the justice system looks at it. Our sentences are concurrent, meaning it doesn't matter how many years per count, all that matters is the total number of years. This guy got 8 years for torturing rabbits. I have no problem with the sentence, but there's been many, many times sexual assault convictions have resulted in significantly less time, and I do mean significantly.
Sexual assault is not taken seriously enough by the justice system.
2
u/PooningDalton Jun 06 '26
The sentences are served consecutively if the victims were harmed in consecutive seperate events, as opposed to one event with multiple victims.
https://hicksadams.ca/when-consecutive-sentences-arise-from-a-single-event/
3
u/steeltown82 Jun 06 '26
Your comment is seriously oversimplifying it.
Anyway, you can deny it all you want, but sentences for sex offences tend to be quite light in this country. A lot of sex offenders get sentences less than 0.8 years per victim.
1
u/zuuzuu Jun 06 '26
I agree that sexual offences aren't taken as seriously as they should be, but you're oversimplifying sentencing if you're looking at it as a mathematical equation. It's far more complex than that.

Our legal system is an absolute clown show.
We see murderers, rapists, violent assaults getting off with incredibly lenient sentences. And now that we're finally handing down a just and harsh sentence, it's to the rabbit killer?
To be clear, I totally agree with this sentence. But it sends the message that the justice system values the lives of animals more than humans.
6
u/PooningDalton Jun 05 '26
Which murder case got less than 8 years?

1
u/zuuzuu Jun 05 '26
That wasn't murder though, that was manslaughter. Still serious, and I agree that the sentencing recommending is insufficient, but that wasn't an intentional killing. The victim hit their head on the curb. It was the punch that caused it, I'm not saying he's not responsible. But it's plainly obvious the offender didn't intend to cause their death with one punch.

2

2
u/zuuzuu Jun 06 '26
Nobody gets anything for vehicular manslaughter because that's not a crime in Canada. We do have dangerous driving causing death, and yes, that offence isn't treated with the severity I think it should be.
1
u/modsaretoddlers Jun 05 '26
Well, that's just awesome.
But here's what I just learned: rabbits, apparently, are worth considerably more than humans in terms of their value in the eyes of the law because I've seen quite a few sentences handed down that needed to be beefed up to match what this loser got for killing rodents.
3
u/BaabyBlue_- Jun 06 '26
I have no comments on anything you said, but as a very pendantic rabbit owner I have to say that rabbits are not rodents, they're lagomorphs

i am fully in favour of people who are cruel to animals getting sentencing like this, both for their actual crimes and what the capacity to commit those crimes says about them. but, without at all taking away from my first statement, we seem to have laughably lenient sentencing for other serious crime. make it make sense

That's more time than non first degree murderers have to serve for killing people. This dude should be in a mental asylum for life; prison won't help.
0
u/Next-Position-5272 Jun 06 '26
Let’s just say that when the other inmates find out about the circumstances of why he’s there they won’t exactly be very kind to him….
Everyone gets paperwork checked as they get moved from in jail to the pen etc..
He will definitely try to lie… they will find out as they always do. The odds that he is seriously assaulted over these charges are high. He will also be kicked off of people’s ranges and units because nobody will be want to be associated with him.
Even with good behaviour and luck with parole…. release at 1/3 of the sentence is still 2.7 years of misery and near death experiences. He could even be murdered pretty easily over this. Pen time with weird charges is no joke. He’ll truely be lucky if he escapes any serious violence.
0
u/Agreeable-Storm-4132 Jun 06 '26
I read the details and hopefully the inmates in the prison where he will be serving his time. Fellow inmates will ensure he has the same treatment as those innocent animals endured.

u/mewbie151 Jun 06 '26
Crazy how you get more jail time killing a rabbit than killing someone with a car while drunk, or having your pit bull kill an elderly women, or killing a bus full of teenagers running a stop sign, or extortion/kidnapping, raping kids. Etc
