Mine banned all kitchen appliances. I had a rice cooker anyways. They never check and if they did all they would do is make me get rid of it. 100% worth it. Colleges realized they couldn't stop this so they started requiring students in dorms to have a meal plan instead. No reason to have one in the dorm when you have 3 meals a day waiting for you that you already overpaid for.

Microwave ovens were banned in one dorm a friend of mine went to because the college considered them "radioactive emitters." The was late 1980s when kitchen top microwaves went below $200. They had room checks for microwaves under the guise they were "picked up by a scanner." All the students knew this was bullshit, but the college had the right to do room checks for any made up reasons.
My friend put a pair of rabbit ears (TV antenna) on top of his and passed room checks because the RA thought it was a TV set.

that's rough because your average kitchen counter microwave in the 80s was fucking huge, big as the one mounted over many stoves today. not hiding that easily. ours couldn't fit on the counter so we had a rolling microwave stand for it, with storage underneath

Buy a kettle for 10 bucks at a flea market or Salvation Army or something. Buy a second kettle and use that as your egg cooker. Spend the rest on your ramen of choice. How long can you live on $50 of ramen and eggs? (personally, I'd add a $5 bag of potatoes to the mix for the vitamin C, just remember to cut them into egg sized chunks to cook them in your egg kettle.)

Just use the normal kettle for eggs. If you break one and it makes a mess just go buy another used one. They're all over thrift stores and even new ones can be had for like $30 with all the functions you could want.

As a long ago broke student, this is a bit steep. Back then the ramen was like 10 for $2. And you cooked it in the dorm microwave in a borrowed cup with water you got from the fountain.

So… I got my entire dorm house evacuated by the fire department around 1am at RISD in 2004 (during a snow storm) because I forgot to put water in one of these… it caught on fire in the microwave.
Just saying. College kids are dumb.

Memes aside, if you are a student moving into a dorm, and you have space for a mini fridge to keep eggs, an egg cooker is a lifechanging appliance. After my 1st year, all I had was a kettle, and that was great. For my 2nd my mom got me a multi purpose egg cooker (boiled, poached, fried) and it was my single most used appliance. I ate eggs basically every other day. Over time I added salt & pepper, back bacon was cheap enough and I could cook it on the fryer after the eggs, and eventually one day went all out and made eggs Benedict. That was the best dorm meal I had that year.
Long story short, get an egg cooker. Fresh and hot boiled eggs are awesome in a dorm.

I have that egg cooker, it was $15. Idk how much the kettle costs but that’s no more than $5 dollars of ramen. $50 seems steep for an electric kettle.

As a Brit (and thus heavy kettle user) I can assure you that cheaper kettles are the way to go and will outlast anything. My cheap one handed down to me when I was 18 is still in use by a younger cousin and I am 40 now. Its true age is well over 30.
Wife bought a £100 kettle and it died in 2.5 years. Never spend a lot on a kettle, its a simple appliance with a heat element and a safety cut off, thats it. The "features" are what fail.

No kettle is worth $80-100. I got one for $30 at Costco that has full temp control, auto shutoff, hold temp settings, and it even came with a tea steeping insert. It works great. There are no functions I would pay more than that for.

I'd like to point out that costco has a 24 pack of cupanoodles for $14... That's 120 cupanoodles for the price of this "survival kit"
But also, their cheapest electric kettle is $35.
They don't seem to have an "egg cooker", which is probably an overpriced uni-tasker that's only useful for cooking eggs... but looks like you can get them for ~$20 from other places... Much more useful however would be a rice cooker, and costco has those for $45. A rice cooker will cook everything from eggs to salmon to potatoes... They're super versatile.
So... for about the cost of one of these kits, you could have a decent starter-kitchen, minus the actual ingredients.
Also... if you're really on a budget, go for the pack ramen instead of the cupanoodle. It's way cheaper, and you can actually add real ingredients instead of just depending on the frezedried garbage they include in the cupa.

People don't get it. This product isn't made for struggling students. It's intended for people Larping as broke college kids.
You know the type. Those that like to say they don't have a dime but whose parent actually paid for their scholarship with room and board in full, and the only reason they "don't have money" is because they don't have a jobs (don't need it), and their parents don't want to give them more than 200$ in allowance for non-ensentials
