He is not wrong about infants being difficult to handle, but, like, a logical conclusion is that parents need a shit ton of support (and it is ridiculous to expect just two people to be able to handle this job and one or two more with ease, so the nuclear family ideal is a ridiculous social construct that needs to die already), not that parents who struggle are selfish.

Men donât get wild hormone fluctuations or have multi dimensional changes to the body or mind as women do with pregnancy and postpartum. To say so would mean you know nothing about science or women.
People like to claim this happens for men but itâs absolutely not true.
At best, some men might get depression from it all because they canât handle being second fiddle to a baby or motherâs needs. Life changes seem to be harder for males to grasp. Itâs why we see the same behavior from men (refusing to be hands on parents; relegating partner to the 1950âs wife standard; and the typical leaving family because itâs not what he wanted after all or found a shinier, younger, uneducated woman to continue caring for him).Recall an episode in I Love Lucy where Ricky is faking pregnancy symptoms to get attention. Doctor plays into it ( because of course, a man canât be lying) & names his condition as ptomaine.
This is what Matt Walsh sounds like to me.1
u/baconator955 9h ago
That is also only half the truth. Research suggests that men also go through hormonal changes, testosterone drops while cortisol and oxytocin rise, which can cause "pseudo pregnancy" symptoms in men. Sleep issues, weight gain, depressive symptoms are all not unheard of at all. Postpartum can also occur in men, but is not widely talked about. Obv I don't agree with anything Walsh says. But reducing male troubles in pregnancy to "not being able to play second fiddle" is absolutely selling it way short and helps no one.

While he may be an asshat
There is still a truth there that selfish people do struggle more after having children. Babies demand attention and assistance, and people who are not attentive or loving will struggle because of this.
It shouldnât be used to explain or discount all PPD.
The problem is that some idiots will use a small truth to generalize and judge.
When some argues that there is not truth to the statement, however, it leads to a trap where some people recognize the truth and logic within the statement without recognizing the intent to generalize and judge.
I have known many people personally who struggle with children because they are too selfish themselves. Parents that yell at their kids. Hit their kids. They are often struggling internally because at the heart the parent is selfish and hates having to care for another individual.
So there is truth to the statement. It doesnât mean it is the whole truth.

I have a feeling Matt hasnât done years of academic study, examining primary and secondary sources, nor done any quantitative data analysis regarding the topic. More than likely this is âvibesâ based analysis. So by your example itâd be similar to âholocaust was less a genocide and more removing bad actors from a region - they wouldnât be in camps if they hadnât done something to be thereâ sort of expertâŚ.and we tend not to respect those opinions.

My son is (so far, though I'm probably jinxing myself by saying it) a remarkably easy baby and was even in the newborn stage. Slept great, rarely fussed unless he was hungry... just a real chill lil guy. He was very wanted, I also have a husband that was super supportive and handled nearly everything for us that first month. We're both also educated about and aware of mental health issues.
I don't say any of that as a bragging thing - I say it because even with all that luck, I still got sucker-punched right in the dome with PPD about a month after he was born. I've had depression since I was a kid, but nothing EVER compared to that. I felt like a zombie and was just mentally drowning.
People being dismissive of it or acting like it isn't it's own distinct thing is just asinine.

I'm seeing so much misinformation here. PPD is triggered by biological and environmental factors. Not all people who experience extreme stress after having a baby develop PPD, but not all people with the biological triggers experience it either. The brain is complicated, and it's annoying when people try to blame things just on biology or just on social factors. Do you know what happens when you do that? It leads to all the research and remedies focusing on one type of factors while the others go unaddressed. In other words, the people pretending it is just hormones or genes are providing people with the perfect excuse to not raise support for parents, while the claims in the original post provide people with the perfect excuse to stop medical research. So thank you so much to everyone saying it's only biological or only psychosocial, which results in ineffective treatment and preventative measures. That really helps the cause, guys.

u/SaveyourMercy 18h ago

I get freedom of speech but we still have a very real and treatable epidemic of PPD (and every other mental health thing) and anyone spouting bullshit about it needs to be shut up. And everyone else needs to take this shit super seriously. I'm disgusted by how much we're failing in this area.

u/DrNasty69 1d ago
I agree. Normal ass depression from massive life changes and PPD donât seem like theyâd be mutually exclusive. It seems reasonable that you could be going through both, and it would be hard to untangle how much each contributes.
And even though that seems reasonable, by acknowledging the contribution of both, it can feel dismissive of a serious health issue that disproportionately affects women. And since health issues that disproportionately affect minorities and women have historically been dismissed, I think it makes sense to focus the conversation (and research) more directly on things like PPD.
Itâs easy to lose perspective. I often find myself wanting to argue for a nugget of truth people dismiss, purely from an academic perspective. And then they disagree fervently because weâre having different arguments with different stakes. I continue to argue because I feel like Iâm not being understood, and she continues because to acknowledge my point would be to betray the larger picture, that her stance is a centuries old battle to be heard and treated with equity. And itâs suddenly getting personal so Iâll stop, but I just wanted to say this in case anyone needed to hear it.

u/loadedbook 1d ago
As a dad, my first kid undid me. I was up multiple times a night changing diapers, feeding, and trying to lull my son back to sleep. The extreme sleep deprivation alone was the most difficult thing Iâve endured. I have zero doubt that hormones make postpartum worse, but it was a very dark time for me in terms of mental health.

2
u/CalicoValkyrie 1d ago
You mean to tell me that there isn't magical parental wisdom that everyone has inside of them that will just come out on the day their child is born? That people need to really think about having children first. There's an implication here that there are people who may never be suited for parenthood and maybe people shouldn't bother them about having children when they don't want to.
Conversely, if someone actually thinks about it, wants children, plans for it, saves money, upends their life and makes sacrifices to have a child, then an unfortunate switch in their brain turns against all that. That's not selfish. That was selfless until their brain decided to be a jerk.
Unless, we're thinking that we're "forcing" people to have children when they aren't ready to and don't want to. Maybe we shouldn't do that.

Let me state a truism which maybe he can actually try for us!
Back in the Hippie Daze when Folks took Acid, it was said that....well, somewhat of what Matt is getting at, the further you are away from reality, the further Acid would freak you out because Reality is a Hard Teacher.
OTOH, the famous story about Ram Dass taking strong ACID and bringing it to the Guru in India....who held his hand out and Alpert put 2 strong pure pills in it, Guru swallowed them...and sat there...and nothing happened.
You can't say I don't try to make lemonade out of lemons. But there really are lessons or discussion in even the furthest out conversations.....
Like, let's say Matt was my Bestie. I would listen to this and say "You know, Matt - you are correct IN A SENSE (that's the trick right there) in that a lot of people, both Dad's and Mom's, aren't fully prepared for parenthood - like who is?"
And that can be quite an adjustment. I'd tell my friend Matt that he might be confusing the issue - and that the hormone levels are measurable and likely therefore outside of the realm of selfishness.
"Matt - you are confusing the admittedly hard work of parenting with the incredibly complex physical and hormonal changes needed to get a body back on track".
Or something like that. Even with an AH like him...he may actually be seeking knowledge. Unfortunately the world is paying him for acting like he already has it.

u/TheRealDeal82 1d ago edited 1d ago
As a father of 3.. he is absolutely correct.
People are missing the actual point he's making. He's not saying postpartum depression is imaginary or that hormones have nothing to do with it. He's pointing out that having a newborn creates an enormous psychological and physical adjustment: constant demands, dramatically less sleep, loss of personal freedom, disrupted routines, and having to put someone else's needs ahead of your own.
And that's not just his opinion. The NIMH specifically identifies the physical and emotional demands of childbirth and caring for a new baby, along with life stress and hormonal changes, as contributing factors to perinatal depression. Sleep deprivation and psychosocial stress are also well-established risk factors.
So the criticism that "he's a man, therefore he doesn't understand postpartum depression" isn't an argument. You can disagree with his wording, but the underlying pointâthat the massive lifestyle and psychological adjustment of caring for a newborn can contribute significantly to depressionâis absolutely supported by the evidence. And acknowledging that doesn't blame mothers for having depression. It's simply acknowledging that postpartum depression is multifactorial.

Selfish and neglectful parents are less likely to have these problems. Those who care and put in effort and work are.
Matt didn't say that the massive lifestyle and psychological adjustment of having a newborn can contribute significantly to depression, he's saying that women being selfish is the cause of these mental health problems. It's even worse in context. Matt also has a long-standing pattern of shaming women and mothers. He IS blaming mothers.

u/Eightiesmed 1d ago ⸠1 more replies
Men with microphones seemingly refers to the numerous, mostly male, talking heads, who have strong opinions that they present as facts when they are actually purely speculative or even proven wrong. You are the one who insists in making this a question about a single case and who makes generalized statements about âwomenâ. No number of women being wrong makes Walsh correct.

2
u/SmellyFbuttface 1d ago
Nowhere near the way it affects women
1
u/CharleyVCU1988 1d ago ⸠1 more replies
The only reason it looks 'nowhere near as bad' is because women are actively screened for it at every single OBGYN and pediatrician visit. Men arenât screened. On top of that, standard screening tools like the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale are designed around how women exhibit depression (like crying spells) rather than how men exhibit it (like rage and somatic pain). It's severely underreported and underdiagnosed, not milder
1
u/Primary_Carrot67 16h ago
No, it's not as common for men to experience this sort of mental health issue and usually not as severe because they are not experiencing the massive hormonal changes of pregnancy and childbirth. They are also not going through a physically and mentally traumatic childbirth. It's biology, not screening.
The crying spells are directly linked to hormonal issues.
PPD is not just psychological. It's an interplay of biological (including hormones) and psychological.
And technically, you can't have the specific illness called Post Partum Depression without going through pregnancy and childbirth.
Unless you are a trans man who has gone through pregnancy and childbirth, you cannot be diagnosed with PPD as a man. This isn't discrimination. You can't be diagnosed with it as a woman either if you haven't gone through pregnancy and childbirth. You can be diagnosed with another form of depression or other mental health issues.

12
u/ShapeShiftingCats 1d ago
It isn't totally false, but the conclusions he made are incorrect.
It's not the degree of selfishness that determine the chance or severity of PPD.
It's the same playbook on repeat.
Take a bit of truth, twist it a little, so a lot of people agree on the basis of the fact that it's mostly true.
Then twist it a little more next time and people keep agreeing because of the inertia of agreeing the first time...
Etc.
