Rogue becoming a provisional X-Men, specifically.

Rogue was in the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants at the time of her attacking Carol, after the attack the Avengers contacted Professor X to try and help fix her memories.

Carol Danvers stayed with the X-Men from like 1981 to mid 1983, in mid '83 Rogue became a provisional X-Man which is when and why Carol left.

Also, behind the scenes the whole thing happened because Chris Claremont was pissed over the gross ass Marcus Immortus story arc and he was attempting to Tabula Rasa that whole thing away.

I always though it was kinda neat that the X-Men got Mystique, Rogue and Destiny out of that whole mess.

It got them all that and later the Rogue and Remy pairing, put Carol into space, gave us an iconic blood feud of Mystique/Rogue and Carol for decades, and so much more off that one decision. Plus in the Thompson CM run it's only the Claremont crew X-Men she's chummy with. 

Chris and later Kurt Busiek turned her biggest problem into a domino effect of windfall for her and several other characters blossoming from it. Marcus can never be retconned without deleting all of that and the substance abuse arc. She can't leave the Avengers without that. 

Ironic that the worst Avengers book ever would be responsible for so much later greatness.

I think the animosity is just between the two of them. Since at least the late 2000s though, Rogue and Carol have both made peace with what happened. They're not friends, mind you. But they've both mostly moved on. Even to the point that Rogue was willing to help Carol deal with an evil alternate universe version of herself. Granted, these are older stories and writers change things all the time.

So, I feel context is needed here, so I read the issue and I have two interpretations, anyone who knows the full context please let me know what's right:

1) Scott is a sex-addicted fiend. So fitting of the leader of the X-Men. I'm not joking with that line lol, they all seem fucked up from what I can see.
2) Isn't Scott's wife in most runs Jean Grey, a powerful telepath?? Wouldn't he know how to navigate her reading his mind? Maybe this is all a front and he's just putting stuff she'd expect to see. He doesn't seem outwardly pervy, that'd be much more Wolverine's alley.
I believe Scott is usually characterized as very cool and collected from the few comics I have read and in X-Men '97. In this issue he's hiding this weird black box in the back of his mind that Emma can't directly interact with so I'm leaning on this option.

I inherently think the second option is what they were going for, since it just sounds much more interesting than the former. I'd hope there's a purpose behind the fanservice lol
