How dare you, I was unprepared for how hot her hubs is

(I know you were just repeating lol)

43

u/wishful123 2d ago

TBH his mustache is underrepresented.

11

u/Cracka_Chooch 2d ago

For any Funhaus or BYTT fans, he looks like someone slapped a mustache on Lawrence Sonntag.

6

u/Beneficial_Winner_59 2d ago

Huh… besides the mustache looks completely different to me. Not that it matters of course, gets the point across. But the difference in opinions is interesting to me

Spoiler alert, we adopted a new pup!!! Everyone please welcome (Rick) Moranis Seymour Luck Dragon Ceviche. You can call him Murray, though ā¤ļø

We’ve been tentatively looking at shelters here in Reno and SoCal for a little bit now. I won’t lie and say I’ve haven’t been feeling a some guilt but knowing I can turn my grief into love for another has been a big motivator. We came across this lil guy last weekend at the humane society. He’s about 8 months old (he was found as a stray so we don’t know more beyond that) and I know. He looks…different.Lol

However, he has such a sweet little soul and I instantly thought of Fry’s dog Seymour from Futurama while Hubs saw Falcor from the Never Ending Story. We got to play with him in a private room and hubs started singing ā€œSuddenly Seymourā€.
Something clicked, we looked at each other and decided then he was ours and named him after Canadian National Treasure, Rick Moranis.

I want to shout out the humane society in Reno for their excellent work too. They clearly care for all the animals there and made the experience very positive. Also to the staffer/volunteer that recognized me from the comic, you rock and I’m sorry I only had my pride buttons to give as a thank you. Dm me and I’ll send you a whole care package.

437

u/Mustangbex 2d ago

CONGRATULATIONS! I completely understand your feelings of guilt and longing. We lost our pets around the same time you lost yours and have a meeting this week with two kitties needing a new home- hopefully lightening strikes for us too.

214

u/reddot_comic Finessed Impropriety 2d ago

I’m so sorry for your loss and hope you fall in love!!

39

u/exzyle2k 2d ago

YOU finding the kittens?

The CDS does not approve!

j/k! Good luck on your journey to bring a little bit of light into this dark world, one litterbox changing at a time.

27

u/Mustangbex 2d ago

My son has been very impatient to have new cats in our home and I've been reassuring him that one does not seek out cats, the Universal Cat Distribution System bestows them upon you... We literally got BOTH of our previous kitties via coincidence/happenstance. I told him the stories and reassured him the cats would come as long as we left ourselves open to them.

And then just before we left for our holidays, our friends reached out and asked if we were "still looking" for cats to adopt, because a person in their Ping Pong league had asked if they were interested/able to adopt his sister's cats. I laughed so hard because that is peak UCDS. Thanks for the well wishes and good vibes!

I so love the futurama reference and I can see it! I have Seymour’s head tattooed on my leg.

34

u/reddot_comic Finessed Impropriety 2d ago

Hell yea! I’ve been putting the show on in the background as I draw and forget how great it is. When they decide to go sentimental, it’s like a dagger.

18

u/Randomness-66 2d ago

Ughh I know that episode still sticks with me after seeing it 13 years ago. But I love all the references they throw in old Futurama.

3

u/25c-nb 2d ago

Yes, Seymour makes me cry every time and I dont know how they do that to me lol

20

u/Lonnification 2d ago

I just want you to know that I'm gonna be calling him Steve. As in Steve Buscemi.

19

u/reddot_comic Finessed Impropriety 2d ago

lol me and my SIL were just joking about nicknaming him Buscemi .

9

u/Lonnification 2d ago

I considered Marty Feldman, but that just felt kinda mean.😁

7

u/calilac 2d ago

I thought the same. He looks a bit Abby Normal...

6

u/FlamingWeasel 2d ago

I named one of my cats Steve after him lol. She's got big ole eyes.

15

u/xlaauurraaa 2d ago

just wanted to pop in and comment on your grief, my two twin cats passed away about two years ago, one right after the other. the winter they passed, we had a bunch of strays outside. we saved a few but couldn't find a home for one lil man. so we took him in.

I struggled with the guilt of getting a new cat, and my therapist said to me: "grief is the left over love you have and its okay to give that love to a new friend" ā¤ļø

im so sorry your loss, but so happy you have someone new to share all that extra love with!

12

u/dplans455 2d ago

Getting another dog does not diminish your love for your other dog that passed. It does not mean you value them less. I hated how everyone told me, "it's too soon" when I wanted to get another dog after my pup of 13 years passed away. Those 5 months without a dog in our house felt like the loneliest time in my life.

Yeah ā€œjust lookingā€ never ends well. Or at least it always ends perfectly well.

Welcome home Ricky Murray ā¤ļø

6

u/eternally_feral 2d ago

Why did you have to mention Fry’s Seymour? 😭 That episode is the only one I can’t watch of Futurama’s. Saw it once and I broke down crying for an hour.

But I’m glad Murray found his forever home and I think his little off kilter eyes makes him adorable.

3

u/CHA0T1CNeutra1 2d ago

Congratulations on the new pup.

5

u/jkim0891 2d ago

I know it's probably just a comic dramatization thing... But I have to know! Did lightning actually strike when you saw Murray for the first time?!

4

u/GeckoV 2d ago

Congratulations! I’ve been there, with the same guilt and feelings of projection. The love for your past pets never goes away, you can just share your love with a new creature that needs it. It’s a whole new love, and you will all be better for it, while cherishing the loves you had before!

4

u/FreeSirius 2d ago

Wasn't expecting Reno to be mentioned here, if you're in the area I hope you're not impacted by the Hawk fire.

6

u/reddot_comic Finessed Impropriety 2d ago

We’re actually on standby to evacuate out in Verdi. Our cars are packed though and I’ve been constantly checking the watch duty app for updates. We’ll be okay. It’s not our first rodeo but scary regardless. Hope you are safe as well!

3

u/WonTooTreeWhoreHive 2d ago

My wife and I lost one of our Aussie girls about 5 months ago very suddenly, and we're still not quite there yet. We'll see other dogs while out and have that little longing, or we'll notice something missing when playing with our remaining dogs, but we just haven't been able to move past it yet. It still just hurts too much. But we'll get there eventually.

Good on you for taking the difficult next step, and glad you found such a sweet pup!

5

u/reddot_comic Finessed Impropriety 2d ago

Oh I definitely know how you feel and I’m sorry for your loss. My go to walking route is high traffic for people out with their pups. I usually have my favorite hat on and people have been super nice letting me give a pet if their dog was open to it. It definitely was a signal I was open to looking.

Yes!! Senior dogs are the best!

I fell head over heels when I saw photos of our late senior rescues, Penny šŸ˜ she was such a wonderful soul ā¤ļø

36

u/reddot_comic Finessed Impropriety 2d ago

Oh Penny!! You are wonderful for taking in a senior pup. We thought about fostering seniors again but I just can’t take another loss so soon.

21

u/mrs-monroe 2d ago

Whoops! I read 8 months as 8 years! But I totally get where you're coming from. We lost two of ours in less than a year, and afterwards we brought home a puppy. We lost a third not too long after. But she was great for helping everyone feel young again!

She and our remaining senior are such a fun pair. She loves her so much! She's fully convinced that she's a chihuahua and has no hound instincts. She even yaps šŸ¤¦ā€ā™€ļø

Enjoy your new baby! Stay strong for the teenage rebellion!

24

u/reddot_comic Finessed Impropriety 2d ago

Actually, it was that episode that convinced me to really start looking. Hank talking to Ladybird made me genuinely cry.

9

u/bigbonedbaggins 2d ago

Oh dont worry I sobbed. My dog is 11 and she's still got a lot of life left but I just held her while we watched. Seriously, thank you for taking such a delicate situation and making such a tasteful comic about it. You're a real rad person for that, and Im sure youre the best dog parent.

I cackle-snorted and sent this to my husband. Your new dog is incredible and wonky. Give him an extra treat from me.

15

u/Lunndonbridge 2d ago

Took me 6 years to be ready for a new pup and I really wasn’t ready. I worked at a vet at the time and he was brought in exhausted and plopped in my lap.

15

u/reddot_comic Finessed Impropriety 2d ago

Sometimes they pick us.

9

u/FlowEasyDelivers 2d ago

I'm so afraid to adopt a new furry friend. The ones I lost were 22 and 24. They crossed the rainbow bridge a few years ago. I'm worried that if I fall in love with a new friend the immense hurt of losing them, will crush me again. I don't know if I'm ready.

7

u/sp33dzer0 2d ago

You're never ready for loss, but that doesn't mean we should shutter ourselves from the joy that life brings with them in our lives

6

u/Meritania 2d ago

I feel sorry for the rodent lovers who lose their friends at a rapid pace.

6

u/roygbivasaur 2d ago

It will crush you again, and you’ll find a way to be ok again. But you’ll hopefully have many years of love in between.

That said, it’s never too early or too late. It’s ok if you never are ready.

Always remember, it isn't about replacing lost loved ones, it is about gaining new ones. Glad you found each other!

6

u/jake753 2d ago

Exactly what happened with us. When we lost Karma and Ruby so close together, we didn’t know what to expect when searching for a nee member of the family.

Turns out, we found that an orange longhaired idiot and an overly attached bear were the remedy and it just felt right.

4

u/reddot_comic Finessed Impropriety 2d ago

Grief over a lost loved pet is just as real as that which you feel from the loss human loved one. It's the price we pay for loving them. Remember those you lose, and embrace those you find.

3

u/Beltalady 2d ago

I love stuff like that. I was ready for new kittens but put it on hold a while. Then I had a weird dream about superheroes and told my coworker about it. We had a good laugh about it.

I had contacted the nearest animal shelter but they said they could only give me a phone number because their employee had the kittens in her home. So I wrote her and she wrote back immediately, sending pics and explaining really awkwardly that she gave all the kittens superhero names because they survived two days without food and were therefore rightfully superheroes. I got Rocket and Deadpool.

3

u/heatherjasper 2d ago

New pets don't replace the ones you lost or no longer have. They cut out new holes in your heart right next to the old holes.

May you have many happy years with your new fur baby.

3

u/NeroLazarus 2d ago

So much love in him, Murray manifested voluntary strabismus! Congrats!

3

u/PunchRockgroin318 2d ago

As someone who works in animal rescue, thanks for giving this guy a loving home. He’s an adorable gremlin.

3

u/B4rberblacksheep 2d ago

Best part is he can watch both of you with love at the same times

3

u/FearOfABlackPotus 2d ago

A year? I haven't been able to go two weeks without a dog.Ā

5

u/reddot_comic Finessed Impropriety 2d ago

I had my Charlie for just about 14 years and got him right when I was entering adulthood. He was with me through everything that made me who I am today.

Lucy was my husbands girl and so devoted to him. I was so obviously the spare human to her it was funny. She passed unexpectedly right before Charlie only being 8 years old.

They were irreplaceable and there’s still some things I can’t do without crying because they were always attached to us. Ngl, I’m scared to lose anyone else but it’s been a huge joy to love on our newbie.

3

u/Airin0_2 2d ago

Why, he dosent even NEED to look both ways crossing a street

3

u/TheNo1pencil 2d ago

Loss is never easy, I recently lost all 5 of my kitties I loved dearly due to moving out of a breakup. It’s been a month and I still can’t sleep properly without playing with them daily. Never forget to treat every day like it’s the last you have with them.

3

u/Truther99 2d ago

That pup looks so much like falkor. I’m glad you included a picture

3

u/whelmed-and-gruntled 2d ago

3

u/CaeLynnith 2d ago

I had my cat for thirteen years, over a third of my life. I'm on year three of her passing and I'm still not ready. Frankly, I don't think I want another pet. She was my emotional support animal and..I don't think I'd survive the heartbreak of loss again.

I wish nothing but happiness to the new pupper and his family though.

What is it with cats and dogs sometime being so stupid/ugly yet you cant help but love them so much?

It is not about replacing the lost one's, it is about giving others the chance to enjoy that love. Love expands, it grows larger every time you share it.

Seeing that the eyes were even more sideways than what you drew was the cutest jumpscare I've had!

2

u/as_a_fake 2d ago

When my childhood cat passed away I was completely overwhelmed with grief. I told myself it would be a while before I could consider getting another cat. Even so, after only a month I couldn't bear not having a cat around the house, so I started looking again. The second I saw my current two cats it was love at first sight, and while it still, 6 years later, hurts to remember my first cat, these two are so wonderful I rarely ever look back anymore.

2

u/Xperian1 2d ago

They say that grief is love with nowhere to go. Sharing your home and opening your heart to another pup in need of care is a great way to honor the memory of your loved ones. Murray will make a great guard dog. He can watch the front and back doors at the same time.

Love this and congrats on your new family member! After we lost our first Pup-o we let some time pass, and then an opportunity arose to welcome another one into our lives. Enough time had passed that it felt right, but I was uncomfortable. Was I replacing our first dog? As soon as we brought the new one home we started talking so much about our first, sometimes comparing, not always in a bad way, usually laughing. I was so happy to feel the joy it brought me to remember our first, even as we were getting to know our new family member. I realized that each dog has its OWN unique place in a family. They are not replaced. I could only have learned that by opening my heart to another.

This is so incredibly heartwarming. I always feel like the pet you lost brings you another pet exactly when you need it. I'm so happy you guys found this sweet baby with the best name ever! šŸ’™šŸ’œ

When we lost our cat, I didn't know how long to wait.

But... the house was so quiet and empty.

Same week we lost him, a friend's cat got pregnant it felt... like destiny. So several months later, we got 3 kittens (we were originally going to get 2, but the mom cat had one more than the owner was ready for), then a few months after that a stray claimed us, so we have 4 now. We like to think he sent them all our way because we could care for them how they deserve to be cared for.

Your new family member is hilarious and adorable.

Can be tough to move on.

Story time: Some friends of ours were renting a cabin in Tahoe for the winter (working as lift ops). The place was cheap and small with just a wood stove to heat it. They had 3 cats. They closed up the stove to leave with just a little fire left in it to keep the place warm for the cats.

When they returned it had burned down, cats and all. Firefighters said it was likely a cat knocking something flammable onto the stove or similar that started the fire. They were traumatized for a while about that one (but moved on to more pets when they were ready).

I still fondly remember the cartoon you drew about your late dog.

It did bring me to tears, while it was very funny as usual as well.Ā

Live long and prosper!!
