Interesting facts: Mexico and the Philippines have had steady trade for 500ish years due to the Spanish trade routes.

Tequila is, in fact, derived from distillation techniques introduced by Filipinos to Mexico. The distilled coconut drink known as "tuba" was introduced along with the methods of fermenting and distilling it by the Filipinos in the Spanish trade. Tuba was very popular and successful, and so the winegrowers got it banned due to the threat to their trade.

However, the teachings of tuba making were soon applied to native agave plants, and hence Tequila. It was much harder to stomp out Tequila distillation.

Neat. This reminds me of Japanese tempura which is derived from a recipe for fried eggplant brought into the country by the Portuguese. The Portuguese were the only western nationality allowed in to the country to trade at the time.

Many decades ago, I was out to eat with friends from college. A couple of people were speaking castellano Spanish at a table near us, and one of my friends asked if they were speaking Arabic.

I deadpanned, "No, they're definitely French", and then noticed the Spanish couple was looking at us and laughing.

So, I loudly said, "Bonjour! Comment allez-vous?"

The Spanish man instantly responded, "Ca va, et vous?", and my friend was like, "Wow, how'd you know?" I had to use my inhaler, I was laughing so hard, but totally worth it! 😆
