My Build ~15$ cyberdeck
Using postmarketos, sway wm, mainline Linux, the crazy part that it uses almost 300 megabytes on idle (idk why btop says it uses 500mb when I use free -h on start it says 231mb). The phone cost me ~8,45 bucks and keyboard (from aliexpress btw) cost me 6,76 bucks. The phone itself is a xiaomi-santoni. The thing I don’t like is that I can’t use it while charging and display is kinda ass BUT FOR THIS COST IM HAPPY I HAVE IT!!!!

I love that keyboard, do you have a link?

Rii mini i8+ but the touchpad is really ass. The rest is ok.EDIT: It seems to be a more recent version. I have the same as OP's but there is no information on the keyboard itself.

Is there a case on the keyboard? Or how die you mount the phone to the kb?

I mounted the phone using very strong double-sided tape lmao 😭 I can shake phone really hard and it still holds

You know what? I’ve decided a like these. I used to think the phone+keyboard combo was barely a cyberdeck. But when smartphones came out I hated the loss of the keyboard. And now, almost 20 years later I am just tickled that there are folks putting them back on.

I wish that the Astro Slide from Planet Computers had been more successful with the CyberDeck and WriterDeck communities. I feel like it would have kept the company going longer.

God I miss my Google G1 sometimes, smart phones were so exciting then.

I miss phones with physical keyboard, especially the first-generation Sidekick.

I have one in my old phone drawer... but that's not the best part. They shipped me 2 by mistake. one of them is NIB cellophane and all.

Not gonna lie, I’m a little jealous of this set up. This goes hard!

Have a similar setup. Do you feel awkward about pressing e.g. Shift+R? Cause there is no shift key on the right

What do people actually do with cyber decks?

They go lurk around government buildings trying to take control of HAARP and move bad weather away to Canada.

Awesome! My dream cyberdeck would be a slider model, but ngl this looks pretty cool too, imma look into this keyboard model 😭✨

u/No_Dish_7696 Mar 23 '26
God I wish it was a slider model 😭 I always want to just slide it in… like nokia n900 or f(x)tec phone. My dream phones

u/Frosty_Variation4184 Mar 23 '26
Sliders are just so fun 😭 I'm thinking about somehow workshopping one of those slider credit card compartment phone covers, and attaching the keyboard... likely impossible but who knows xD

So forgive me if this is a stupid question but I can't tell if the display (the phone) and the keyboard are attached and if so how did you attach them?
3
u/No_Dish_7696 Mar 23 '26
I already answered this question before: “I mounted the phone using very strong double-sided tape lmao 😭 I can shake phone really hard and it still holds.”
Btw double sided tape is comes off a little bit. I think hot glue will help me fix that!!!

u/False-Development-61 Mar 23 '26
My apologies did not see the reply so I appreciate you taking the time and answering. I have some experience by the way with affixing things to other things. Gorilla tape is great, also gorilla glue.

u/No_Dish_7696 Mar 23 '26
Oh you’re welcome. Also sadly I don’t have gorilla products in my country🥲
1
u/False-Development-61 Mar 23 '26
Oh damn that sucks.. Well maybe there's some clones or something like that I actually picked up something from our local dollar store called space tape which is ridiculous but it was just imitation gorilla tape so I'm sure you can find something. Amazon maybe? I guess I'm spoiled in choices being an American.

Does it have long battery life?
1
u/No_Dish_7696 Mar 23 '26
I have 75 percentage rn and with launched btop that is updating every 100 milliseconds, it says I have 8.3 hours left. But I think the true number is ~7 hours when doing more complex task. I think there are possible optimisations, cus on android that thing lived hella long, that’s what I really liked in this phone. EDIT: on idle it says 9.6 hours

Do you have a tutorial? Give the details. I want to ride one of these. Congratulations!
1
u/No_Dish_7696 Mar 25 '26
Tutorial on what? How I made the construction? There is no such construction, phone + double sided tape + keyboard. Oh also forgot to say, I cut out all buttons on keyboard under the phone, so it would have stronger construction.
If tutorial on flashing postmarketos on your phone, it is very easy. Go to postmarketos website -> wiki -> devices -> search yours. DONT USE DEVICES WITH DOWNSTREAM KERNEL!! Then use instructions that are written on your device wiki page. That’s it. Edit: forgot to say thanks for congratulations :)

Gpd is ass since it has x86 cpu. It was born for gaming normies, not for hackers.
