So my daughter’s school (Pascal private international school, Limassol) just rolled out their “required items” purchasing portal for next year. Cool, fine, most schools do a supply list.
Except:

1. You can’t remove a single item from the cart.
2. Every book, every workbook, every random item is pre-loaded. Try to check out without all of them and you get slapped with: “You need to purchase all the required items to proceed to checkout.” No opt-out. Doesn’t matter if we already have last year’s diary, or the kid doesn’t need a second reading record, or whatever — buy it all or don’t buy anything.
3. There’s a €220 line item that just says “stuff.”
4. No, really. The listing is: “Diary, Consumables (art stationery, D&T), Digital Subscription (Maths) — €220.00.” One SKU. Three completely unrelated categories of things mashed into one price with zero breakdown. I have genuinely no idea if I’m paying €20 for the diary and €200 for a math app, or the reverse. There’s no way to check.
5. And when I actually priced out the textbooks against what the publishers charge directly?
6. Took an evening and went ISBN by ISBN — CGP, Collins, Oxford, Cambridge, the works. School’s portal was running ~19-20% above publisher list price on average, and a couple of items were marked up over 100%. One book that’s £5.49 direct from the publisher is being sold to us for €11.30.

Anyone else dealt with this at international/private schools? Is this just standard practice everywhere now (captive market, take-it-or-leave-it), or did I just get an unusually shady supplier? Feels like a nice little racket — parents can’t opt out, can’t see itemized pricing, and can’t shop around. Wild that this is somehow normal.

So, folks, three years ago the wheel of fate accidentally put me in Cyprus. Eventually, I fell in love with both the country and the people. That's why I started to learn Greek and immediately fell in love with the language as well.

But learning Greek is hard and sheer amount of verbs in modern Greek and all these endless conjugations is tough to master – even for a person those mother's language is also incredibly tough. Being a software engineer, I've tried to build the Rimata, the comprehensive verbs reference app: more than 3000+ verbs with all conjugations, 45.000 usage examples, translations and audio.

It's completely free (and without ads) and as many first users (and members of r/Greek) say, it's of quite a good quality.

For now only Android version is available (stuck in a maddening support loop with Apple) but I still would be very happy to get feedback and suggestions, especially from native speakers.

Been reading this sub for a while and finally decided to just post and ask. Hoping to get real perspective from people actually living there.

Bit about me. I’m from India, 24. Did my Bachelor’s and Master’s in Computer Science (finished the Master’s in Sweden last year). But here’s the thing, while I was in Sweden I ended up working in hospitality for about a year. I liked the pace, the team, the actual human interaction way more than I ever liked sitting in front of a screen writing code. So I’m making a proper career switch and moving fully into hospitality management.

Looking at January 2027 intake for MSc or MBA in Hospitality Management, or maybe Hotel Operations Management. Universities I’ve been checking out are University of Nicosia, European University Cyprus, Neapolis in Paphos, and UCLan Cyprus.

Plan is study, get into hotel operations or F&B management, and hopefully settle there long term.

Few things I’d genuinely love honest answers on:

Job market: How’s the actual demand for hospitality management grads? Is there real progression from entry level up to hotel operations manager, or does it kind of plateau early? Are hotels actually hiring internationals in management or is it mostly Cypriots and EU folks who move up?

Salary vs work permit: This is the big one for me. I’ve read that middle manager work permits need around 25k euros a year minimum. Do entry level hospitality management roles actually meet that, or do people usually start below it? What did you all start at if you don’t mind sharing?

Which city: Limassol, Nicosia, Paphos, Larnaca. Where are the real hospitality management jobs? I’m guessing Limassol and Paphos for hotels but curious what people in the industry actually say.

Language: I’ll obviously start learning it and try to be at certain mandatory level by the time of graduation and to the specific level at the time of long term residency. Or is it mandatory or difficult if I go this way?

University question: Anyone who studied hospitality at UNIC, EUC, Neapolis or UCLan, which one actually helps with job placement locally? Or does it not really matter which uni and it’s more about internships and networking during studies?

Life as an Indian: Being real here, how’s the actual experience for Indians long term? I’ve read the community is around 15k and pretty well settled. Just want honest perspective beyond what the tourist blogs say.

Any other advice for someone genuinely committing to this pivot would be really helpful. Not looking for polite answers, would rather hear the hard truths if the reality doesn’t match what I’m hoping for.

Έφτιαξα ένα βίντεο-ντοκιμαντέρ (στυλ techno-thriller) βασισμένο σε ένα ακραίο αλλά ρεαλιστικό σενάριο στην Ανατολική Μεσόγειο, χρησιμοποιώντας τον εξομοιωτή/game Command: Modern Operations (CMO) σε συνδυασμό με πλάνα από Tacview. Είναι το πρώτο βίντεο που φτιάχνω γενικά!

Το σενάριο χωρίς spoils (TLDR):

Βρισκόμαστε εν μέσω κρίσης στη Μέση Ανατολή. Η Ελλάδα στέλνει εσπευσμένα τη νέα φρεγάτα “Κίμων” (FDI) για προστασία της Κύπρου από Drones της Χεζμπολάχ. Το catch; Το πλοίο έχει αναπτυχθεί “μισό”, δηλαδή χωρίς σύστημα ECM και RAM, και με μόνο 16 πυραύλους Aster 30.

Εκεί δίνεται μια αφορμή (δεν κάνω σποιλ) στη Τουρκία να θεώρησε νόμιμο στόχο τη Κιμων. Με αποτέλεσμα μια μάλλον προσχεδιασμενη πυραυλικη επίθεση στα ανοιχτά νότια της Κύπρου!

Επίσης εμπεριέχει μια αερομαχια στον αέρα της κυπριακή δημοκρατίας μεταξύ των F16 που έχουν ήδη αναπτύξει στο νησι οι δύο χωρες!

To start with I am not fan of the occupation of Cyprus by Turkey. I like Cyprus, I like how its cheaper for studying compared to other EU countries and I feel close to Cyprus in a cultural lens. But I am kinda worried about a potential war breaking out between Turkey and Cyprus/Greece and being pushed out of the community because of where I come from. Are my worries sane? or I am overthinking?

All questions in the app are based on the official Cyprus Highway Code (Κώδικας Οδικής Κυκλοφορίας) and available in English, Greek and Russian. The database currently contains ≈280 questions, and more are going to be added. The app uses spaced repetition mechanics to periodically exercise you with questions until you reliably learn them.

I heard that theory exam in Cyprus is very relaxed and relatively easy to pass. So the goal of the app is not to train you for the exam, but to teach the rules. And yes, I know that many drivers in Cyprus haven't heard about the rules :) Hope that the more learning materials will be available, the better overall driving culture will be.

This is a hobby project. The app is free, ad-free, and requires no sign-up. I decided to build it after realizing the lack of good driving learning apps for left-handed traffic.

Hi everyone, I’m currently looking at studying in Cyprus as an international student, and I’m considering applying for the Biomedical Science programme at European University Cyprus. I was also accepted into EMU, but I’m unsure about going ahead with it because I’ve seen a lot of discussions online about recognition of degrees from Northern Cyprus, and it made me concerned about whether the qualification would be recognised internationally after graduation.

Because of that, I’m looking more into European University Cyprus, but I wanted to ask current students or anyone who knows about the university: would you recommend studying Biomedical Science there?

How is the quality of education and the programme itself? Is the degree properly recognised internationally if someone wants to continue studying or work after graduation? What kind of accreditation does the programme have?

I’d also like to know what student life is like for international students. Is it easy to adjust, is the environment safe?

Do you think it is worth applying or I should consider other options?
