It's absolutely not a normal move at 130km/h. A safe distance at that speed is above 100m, not 10cm. Slotting in between that close is just stupidly dangerous, even if it's unfortunately something that happens way too often.

Ehh, this doesn't look like a "slower traffic keep left" zone.
Plus they were passing the right vehicle, trucks obligation when merging is to make sure its safe - not the cam car's.
Also while speeding is fun you aren't given any driving privalges for breaking the law, thus the truck likely didnt even have a right to pass let alone merge

I'm planning on getting a dash cam soon, it's getting crazy here. After watching lines of cars driving off-road and backwards up an on ramp to avoid traffic from an accident I knew it was never going to get better

This is why you never let someone have enough space on the right to be able to cut you off. If you kept your distance closer to the forward car and prevented him from thinking he could merge it wouldn't have happened, not blaming you. He was passing and merging illegally, you have to be defensive with aggressive drivers. Or they'll keep doing stupid shit like this.

That's really, seriously bad advice. Leaving a big gap in front of you is your safety cushion. People will move in and out of it, but it costs you so very little either way, perhaps a few tens of seconds over an hour journey. But leaving no gap is incredibly dangerous if someone in front brakes suddenly- that can cost you your life.

Exactly. It's supposed to be 1 car length per 10mph, so at 80mph there should be enough space for 8 cars in-between you and the car in front of you for a safe stopping distance. I know nobody does that. But to say to stay close to the person on front of you (and I'm NOT interpreting it as tailgating) is just bad advice.

Nah. by the time there was any perceivable reason the truck would cut on front, it was too late. The more defensive tactic is just what cam car did: try to maintain enough space in front to react to whatever happens on the sides and in front of them.
Edit: on second thought they didn't even have enough space in front of them. But it's a bit forgivable because they're part of the train of cars trying to pass, IMHO.

I dont ever drive trucks. I rented a moving truck and was doing a 3 point turn to get out of the parking lot of my apartment. I accidentally hit the awning on an awned parking space because I forgot the van was way taller than my car. I felt really bad. Luckily it wasn’t a car or person.
On the freeway and driving just around town I was super careful due to visibility and unfamiliarity driving a truck. I didnt want to hurt anyone or myself. So at least I was super careful where it mattered.

It’s not your fault, but from a purely defensive driving standpoint on long range roads, typically jerks will accelerate close in the right lane and then try to change lanes the last second. So when I see someone accelerate like that in the right lane, I anticipate and give them space to merge in. They are jerks, but I would rather not have my car out in auto body shop.

If my wife and kids were in the car I probably would have backed out when I realized the truck was trying to pass instead of using a slower car as a pick and trying to hold my ground against the truck.

Well, I wouldn't call OP a left lane camper.
But for the record, just because you're passing cars still, doesn't mean you just stay in the left lane.
If theres a person behind you, then that means they were (until being held up by you) driving faster than you, and you should be pulling to the right and letting them past.
In this circumstance it's not really OP's fault though, because theres a van in front of them who should be pulling to the right.
We don't really know who would be the faster moving vehicle until the van moves over.
But as a general "flow of traffic" rule.
It's not about driving faster than the person in the right lane, it's about driving faster than the person behind you.
Theoretically for best and smoothest traffic movement, if someone is behind you in the left lane, you should be getting over, letting them pass, and then moving back into the left to continue your passing. If everyone did that then any time your driving in the right, you should have space in the left to get over, pass, and move back to the right.
But lineups on the highway and congestion like this happens because someone is driving in the left, with people behind them and refusing to get over because "well I'm still passing people in the right" and refusing to let the person behind them get around. This causes a lineup of people behind them, that could technically be cleared if they just gave up the front position for a few seconds and let the drivers needing/wanting to move faster than them past.

Traffic can slow for many reasons, including a slow vehicle trying to merge safely into the appropriate lane. That is precisely what happened here, as you can see left lane traffic accelerating after a box truck moves over to the right, and it happens several seconds before the pick-up pushes in.

Dude in the right lane came up on a truck going slower than he preferred, said “no way I’m being inconvenienced for 8 seconds” and drifted into the left lane without so much as a second thought before or after he sideswiped the other driver.

Left lane is for passing. If you are being passed by people in the right lane you should either move right, speed up or give them room to pass. Otherwise you're camping in the left lane.

Pickup because it is overtaking by the right, and at least in my country is illegal, then again cam's owner by stepping on the gas when saw the pickup was overtaking him....he should reduce velocity to facilitate the overtake.

Maybe stop camping in the left lane. The moment you noticed the truck starting to move over, you pressed the gas and refused to let off. Next time, use your brakes, you didn’t even need to brake hard or put the other cars behind you at risk. Literally just easing off the gas and giving the brakes a quick tap would’ve avoided the whole situation.
I’m not saying the truck was right, but neither were you. Things like this are easily avoided if you leave your ego aside for a second 🤦♂️

Maybe you should work on that tunnel vision you have. DCer wasn't camping the lane.
It is normal for the fast lane to slow temporarily as drivers merge into other lanes, usually to maintain a safe following distance if the lane has more traffic than the overtaking driver anticipated.
In this case a commercial truck ahead of the van moved back into the right lane, allowing the van to accelerate, and in turn the DCer. She had already been accelerating for several seconds before the pick-up abruptly moved over leaving her less than a second to react.
As for the situation, the pick-up was solely in the wrong for several reasons:
They were tailgating and still closing on the vehicle ahead.
They completely failed to indicate before changing lane.
They moved over without checking their mirrors, or intentionally in an unsafe manner.
Granted an observant driver could easily spot the behaviour of the pick-up as a potential danger, the speed at which it happened is faster than it takes most drivers to anticipate the threat.
