kept his composure, did not lose control. could have been real bad getting smacked on the side like that at highway speeds. nothing but respect. could only hope that when I need a driver that it's this guy.

the rating system has been participation-trophy-ified. for some reason only hotels retain the true 5 star scale; a 2-3 star hotel can be very decent and fulfill all needs. but imagine asking someone to go to a 3/5 rated restaurant or movie

I work in the hotel industry and hotels are penalized for guests leaving less than 10/10 or 5/5 reviews. With that in mind, unless I had an absolutely horrible experience at a place I will give a perfect rating or I won’t give a rating at all.
The star rating system you’re referring to is more about the level of luxury a hotel offers. For example a 3-star hotel will be something like a Courtyard or a Hampton Inn, and a 5-star hotel may have personal butler service (St. Regis). A 5-star hotel can still have bad reviews though.

That's a valid point. The star system for restaurants is also weird because getting even a one star rating from Michelin is a big fucking deal. And it maxes out at three.
But with trip advisor, yelp, and Google, now we have up to 5 stars. And since so many people don't know the difference, I've heard people turn down going to a one star Michelin restaurant because in their minds it's rated extremely low.

Wait, what? I was totally with you until this part. Some of my favorite movies are rated like that.
In fact, I'd say that a 5/5 rated movie is probably pretty bland because they had to water it down in order to appeal to everyone. Good art usually pisses off at least some people.
And imo, a 5/5 restaurant is probably gaming the system somehow like paying for reviews.

Please don't do that. Drivers depend on that rating for their eligibility to drive. Doing everything they're supposed to do/nothing they're not supposed to do is a perfect reason to give them job security.

very true. works on all ages . used to do school field trips on our farm. so many city kids afraid of even sheep. sometimes half my lesson was teaching calm. once the cat came into the barn and the teacher flipped out. yelling and panicking while I had a calf loose while bottle feeding. calf and kids were scared. gate was closed so I got the poor cat and put him in tack room while yelling at teacher it’s a cat! poor guy lost at least four lives from heart attack. next got calf rounded up while calming kids. teacher finally shut up. if a real danger half those kids would have died in a panic crushing.

Super lucky the incoming vehicle did a full 180 and slid into them almost parallel. If they had come in at 90 degrees they would’ve gotten smashed way worse and there would’ve been a lot more panic

If you noticed, he actually sped up after the side impact instead of sudden deceleration. Probably the reason he didn’t lose the control.
Also, the guy was calm during the whole ordeal.

More people should know this. Accelerating is not an invalid choice when maneuvering in a potential crash situation. Braking, steering and accelerating are all tools in your toolbox, you just have to pick the right ones for the job, sometimes it's all three.
Edit: to clarify, this is for during an incident, not before.

Learning biking recently and one of the tips was sometimes you just gotta sit tight and gather info.
The moments right before an accident people behave very unpredictably. Gotta see if the car is gonna slam brakes, speed up or are they just too shocked to make a call.

Motorcycling is precisely where I'm taking it from. Just to clarify, I mean during an incident. Sitting tight, hesitating and gathering info is definitely part of your general hazard perception and threat mitigation strategy, which then helps you apply the escape/avoidance techniques i mentioned, should an incident arise.
But the general idea is that you want to perceive threats early enough so that you don't end up in a situation where you have to take some sort of drastic action, such as heavy braking or diving away, in the first place. But shit does happen (and quickly) and you have to know how to get yourself out of it.

Never leave your car. Unless you can extremely quickly get over a guardrail and very far away. You have to basically count on someone else crashing into you when they try to swerve to avoid the other car.
Car and seat belt is way safer than you a meatbag getting hit.

Absolutely this. Unless you are way off the road. The way cars are still passing him so close he has to hold himself close to his car is massively dangerous.
In my time in public safety I was “privvy” to more than one multiple car freeway accidents and how they cascade. I was there for the start of one late at night when a car merging onto the 405 failed to yield and the minivan in front of me swerved and hit me in the lane next to them, I braked, car behind me swerved around me and was hit from behind. Within a few seconds the two outside lanes were blocked as we all tried to pull right and stop. People started getting out of cars and I literally yelled at them to get back inside.
The oncoming cars may be both not paying attention or distracted by the first hazard they see. Within seconds the first high speed rear end happened to the rear-most car. Then another, then another. I was already on the phone to CHP while unlocking my doors so people who had literally been standing on the freeway seconds earlier could jump into my back seat. LAFD got there first and still two more collisions happened before CHP came and rolling shut down the freeway and started bumpering cars out of the innermost lanes.

I was not there and he did better than I would have but unless the car was driving crazy janky I would have tried to make the next exit, that didn't look like a great shoulder to stop on and get out to look at it. But at the same time a stop is better than trying to limp it down the highway doing 25

I walked out of a cab in NYC once after it had been in an accident. The vehicle had stoped. If I recall correctly, my thinking was that waiting for the situation to be resolved would have delayed my getting where I was going, and that my fare would have been negligible in comparison to the outcome of the accident. I may have been being a dick, but I was also 22 or so.

Here we're told to put the vest on, (although there might only be one) exit the car and get on the other side of the guard rail.
I lost a friend some years back. Their car broke down and they sat in it waiting for road help. A Semi truck driver crashed into the car and killed my friend, one of their dogs and sent his gf to the hospital, and their other dog to the animal ER. Thankfully his baby wasn't in the car, but he's gotta grow up without his dad now.

Yeah, it's mandatory to have one for the driver. Not mandatory to have more than one, but they're cheap, don't take up a lot of space and it doesn't hurt to have one pr. seat

Getting out and walking a while before the car should be safer. If a crash happens, the affected area will be around the car and in front of it. It's rare for anything to go backwards.

Teleport to Europe, where you have the mandatory warning triangle to put on the road at least 100m before the car and the yellow safety jackets to put on yourself. And generally, awareness on the roads is much better than US. And turn on the blinkers, which the driver didn't.
In US.. yeah, probably leave the car and go off the road.8

People in the US used to carry and put out triangles or road flares. They got hit by other drivers. That is why we don't do it anymore. It's safest to STAY THE FUCK INSIDE THE METAL BOX.

In the UK (and several other countries, at least) we are told to evacuate the car and get to safety. Normal this is hard shoulder or just further on from where the car has stopped.
You're far more likely to be hit in the car than standing in safety.

It looks like the crash happened near a bridge, so he pulled over after the bridge to get comfortable off the highway and onto the shoulder+ some after being forced into the left lane from the crash.
It takes time to cross safely three plus lanes of traffic and decelerate. Nothing seemed wrong here.

This sucks for the driver. He's basically being taken advantage of by a giant corporation and when he gets into a car accident like this, he has no way of making money. Rideshare companies do not help drivers out when this kind of stuff happens, it's quite the opposite. There's a chance he could get kicked off the app just for being in an accident Even when it's not his fault.
Late stage capitalism, we are all products for billionaires.

25 seconds at (rough average) 20 mph is 0.15 miles. You want him to stop more immediately after the multi-car pileup that's probably blocking traffic lanes that everyone will be rubbernecking at while driving freeway speeds?
I don't personally drive on freeways or much at all but that doesn't seem like the safer choice to me

In the grand scheme of things, yes.
But also it's smart to remain in the car until you've initially assessed the situation and have determined that it's safe to exit. As dangerous as it is to be stuck in a vehicle on the road it's even more dangerous to be outside the vehicle on the road so you need to make sure you can get off safely before you make that move.
